I'm still wrestling with how I'm feeling after my mom was here earlier this week.
The thing is: it was a good visit! We had a nice hike, we found a few fun restaurants with outdoor seating we could take her to, we talked a lot and laughed at stuff and she even told a few stories about when she was younger I hadn't heard before. (My mom is a pretty private person so new stories and bits of information are fairly rare!)

Everything was good EXCEPT for the fact that I spent the entire time bracing for her to use the wrong pronouns or other language for me, which meant I was constantly stressed even when things were going well.
AND except for the fact that she did indeed use the wrong pronouns once the first night.
And yeah it was just once. In some ways it feels ridiculous to complain. But on the other hand, how do you do this to your kid when you have known the pronouns he prefers for nearly nineteen years???

My big fear is that she doesn't make any kind of effort to use the right language for me when I'm not around. The ONE time I confronted her about how she keeps messing this up, which was maybe 6-7 years ago, I told her that was my fear...and she didn't address that at all when she responded, which feels meaningful on its own.
So I don't know, I'm hurt and angry and also feel a little silly because it could be so much worse but her lack of care points to SOMETHING, surely.

I have never been good at correcting people on my name/pronouns/etc in the moment or discussing it in general. There's a reason I have only directly addressed this issue with my mom once, over a decade after I came out (aka was pressured by my dad into coming out before I was ready). I didn't have control of the narrative when they learned I was trans and we never really talked about it after that miserable experience. They say they are supportive now but we never discuss it.

Sometimes people's kids come out and they do a lot to educate themselves about queer/trans issues or say "hey these new laws are terrible, how are you feeling?" and it would feel really nice if either of my parents did that.
I've said this a few times since mom left but it would be easier, in some ways, if she messed up more or was less overall supportive. It would be much worse, absolutely, but also kind of easier to deal with.

@MsHearthWitch it's really sad because my relationship with my parents is complicated (which...I guess is not unusual at all and kinda goes without saying) but overall GOOD, and this is a really painful element in the midst of it. bleh.

To celebrate new job, new chapter, new me... I splurged on a set of All-Clad D3 pots and pans.

Not a bunch, just your basics, as I also frequently use cast iron. But teen dislikes cast iron (even the enamel pots) and I will admit they're not always best suited to a task.

I am so excited. Literally the snow white meme on the window waiting on them to get here.

I've lusted after an all-clad set for years. Big BIFL energy.

And now my wallet is screaming stop, lol.

It was SO nice in SF today, after work I took a mid-afternoon trip to the little park near my house where I often like to sit and dogwatch while doing my duolingo lessons, and the wind and sun were so perfect I had a moment where I teared up a little. (Also there were some very good dogs out and about)

@MsHearthWitch it was really nice! I don't get enough chances to just sit still outside on a nice day, honestly. I get out but usually that's taking walks to run errands or I only have time to sit in the park for a few minutes and not longer like I did today.

I had some leftover beer yesterday, and a really active sourdough starter...

So y'all know where this is going.

I really love Emilie Raffa's basic loaf. I chuck everything in my kitchen aid, give it a whirl. Rest 30 min. Another lil whirl. Then into a container to proof overnight.

Quick shape in the morning and into a banneton. Give it like an hour or two, slice the top and bung it into the dutch oven for 50 min with the lid on. Perfection

The same round sourdough loaf cut in half. The crumb looks pretty good, it has some large holes in it.

Oh, absolutely panicked mum moment.

My son (19, currently in South Korea for school) was just robbed. Their phone and wallet were stolen.

All access to banks and everything ofc goes through the phone. No money for replacing phone, transit card, etc etc.

They did have a tablet back at their dorm (that's how we were able to talk). So they've tracked the phone and are walking to a police station we found nearby to update the report with the location of the phone.

Orientation at work today. It'll be the first time I've held a job that wasn't working for myself in close to a decade.

Gotta say, I'm super fucking nervous. Mostly about expectations RE: hours. My actual boss is very very chill which works great for me.

The person doing my orientation, I'm not sure. They have an expectation for me to meet all of the volunteers this week, but that means working way more than my allotted hours, AND being on site constantly. Not the hybrid I was told.

Attempted shaker cookies today. It's been YEARS since I made sugar cookies, so they're a little rough around the edges. But we had fun icing them!

The cutaway part is isomalt, with edible glitter in the middle. It's two cookies stacked on top of each other.

I'm hoping my new job affords me opportunities to bake fun treats for other people again.
