"A small container of labneh please. Where is yours made?"
"It's pressed yoghurt!"
"Oh yes I know but where is it made? Is it made in Montreal!"
"Yoghurt! It's yoghurt. I'll give you a taste."
"No, sorry I'm just asking where do you get it from? Where is it made?" Gives me a sample on a spoon
[Proudly] "We make it here."
So here's the thing. I like animals including, of course, dogs. (I don't have any because I live in an apartment and I'm allergic to most mammals.)
But when I'm running/hiking at the county park. Where leashes are REQUIRED on the trails. And dogs I don't know come running up to me.
The reason I look unhappy at the owners is not because I dislike dogs. It is not because I have an irrational "fear" of dogs. It's because I don't like complete strangers running up to me out in the woods. 😠
@_L1vY_ OK the thing that gets me is the moralising and judgement about anyone who responds in this way to unleashed dogs. I saw a whole social media thread with people going on about how we are awful and hate dogs and it's all our problem. So yeah, I won't "say anything".
@_L1vY_ Yeah. I've recently asked a friend for common commands so I can try to get the dog to stop, this was after 2 different dogs were being (deliberately IMO) ignored by their owners as they were running at me and I was clearly unhappy about it. In a space where the signs indicated leashes were required. I felt I had no control in the situation.
@_L1vY_ It's weird how this reminds me of dealing with drivers as a pedestrian. It's the same "rules are not frills that are there for special occasions, politeness is not a substitute for these rules, they are to ensure everyone is safe" thing.
@_L1vY_ Ditto for "you do not wait until an outbreak of measles to get your child vaccinated for measles". Don't wait until your dog misbehaves before putting on the leash. Don't wait until you have a car crash before following the road rules. What is going on in people's heads?
@_L1vY_ It's like a fundamental loss of the understanding that some bad things are now "exceptional" because we worked to make them that way. Not because those things are not real, significant problems.
This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)
No new baby goats this morning (just the 4 from the last few days). The mama who's been gigantic for the last month is due today, so hopefully she'll have lots of healthy babies! I predict 4 (and I predict she'll have them at the most obnoxious time...I have lots of meetings today, but I have even more meetings tomorrow that are way less flexible, so today would be great!)
