In Europe, flying is cheaper than taking the train.

It's an embarrassment, and a major problem: we have to stop flying for silly short distances. Realise that the overheads of flying (reaching the airport, awaiting 2 hours, the flight, the unloading, reaching the destination) largely cancel out any time gains of flying. And the carbon costs are utterly untenable. Not to speak of the modern, dire conditions of the whole flying "experience".

Another embarrassment is that train connections can't be guaranteed when across countries or companies. They aren't even coordinated. As if those who commission and set the schedules didn't travel by train themselves, at least not internationally. In considering how tiny most European countries are, it's frankly bizarre.

There are so many destinations one could travel by train to, yet in practice, it's not sensible. A disgrace.

The upside is that it can be fixed.

I honestly think has missed the boat on this one. Those who care about will already be on or ; and those who don't care won't pay the extra to get it. The fact the aforementioned three services all include lossless in their base subscriptions while it will be an extra tier on Spotify won't help matters.

If they'd gone lossless a year ago it might have mattered. Now, not so much

#Loseless (and especially #HighRes) audio is all a placebo at best (and a marketing con at worst) anyway. The vast majority of people cannot tell the difference between a 320kbps mp3 and a 192KHz24bit file, and that only gets more true as we age. Lossless is useful for archival purposes; audio consumption not so much. #Music

#youtube streamers have literally discovered the media equivalent of #drugs:

An influencer reading other people’s semi-funny tweets on repeat. Hundreds and hundreds. Endlessly.

It keeps giving you little hits of dopamine over and over, keeps you hooked, wastes your time & doesn’t get you anywhere even if you feel something like a real feeling.

I call these ”brain rot”. My kid agreees, and keeps watching.

The race to the bottom of the brain stem is painful to watch sometimes. 🙁

Last year, FF XVI was a flop (according to "industry analysts"), now #FF7Rebirth is "under performing" when compared with a game that released in the middle of a lockdown and before a cost of living crisis. Then there is the fact Remake released at the end of the PS4 lifecycle when the install base was at its peak, where Rebirth released in 2024 on PS5 only when the install base still hasn't caught up with the previous generation.

Let's be honest, there are indie companies who would jump at the chance to make Rebirth numbers. Yeah these "industry analysts" can suck the big one. #VideoGames

@kaveinthran Smashwords is DRM free I think. And a lot of ebooks sold by Kobo are DRM free (it is also displayed on the store page whether it has DRM or not). I also like Storybundle for DRM free ebooks.
