I'm 51 and I've lived at nine addresses. What about you?

ollej,
@ollej@hachyderm.io avatar

@mrundkvist I’m at 46 and 14, I think. Does the same address count twice if there was a 2.5 year gap in the middle when I lived in another country?

ollej,
@ollej@hachyderm.io avatar

@mrundkvist I thought it would have been more places before I counted. It’s eight different towns and two countries.

Hi! I've been developing a game, a nomadic city-builder called The Longtime, as a text adventure. The game is feature complete now, so I'm looking for alpha testers as I work on adding content. Anyone want to play my game?

ollej,
@ollej@hachyderm.io avatar

@garbados That sounds like fun, I would love to try it out.

Settle an argument for me.
Does the word "integer" have a hard or soft G?

ollej,
@ollej@hachyderm.io avatar

@Edent Hard if I’m speaking Swedish, but soft when I’m speaking English. Except for when I screw up and mix them up, probably.

You (uninspired, bland, predictable): syntax highlighting with colours.

Me, (innovative, experimental, pushing the envelope): syntax highlighting with fonts.

ollej,
@ollej@hachyderm.io avatar

@mhoye Now make the fonts part of the language syntax for an extra level of enlightenment.

Tales of the Arabian Nights is a very long story boardgame that produces confusing stories.

@mrundkvist I’ve played that once. I got the “go directly to jail card” and spent most of the game in jail. The others seemed to have fun though.

How do I read a database file from the 90's in the format "Berkeley DB 1.85 (Hash, version 2, native byte-order)"?

I've tried the berkeley-db package from Mac homebrew and db-util on Debian. They both fail to read the metadata.

@gdinwiddie Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, it's from a web forum system called WWWThreads v2.7.4 written in Perl.

If I recall correctly, it stopped working in an upgrade of glibc. And I think it had something to do with the endianness of the format changed.

I spent some time implementing the three bodies simulation in Macroquad and put up a web demo: https://github.com/ollej/macroquad-three-bodies/

I finally started writing my analysis of the old Icelandic family saga Njall’s saga. My first sentence was accidentally almost exactly the same as the first sentence of Lars Lönnroth’s critical introduction. 🤦‍♂️

@gdinwiddie Luckily, I’m not planning on being a Harvard professor. :) But I’m changing it anyway, and adding proper citation.

Just got spam to the email address I gave a shady online seller. Good to know that I shouldn’t use them anymore, and that I can easily remove that address. Giving out a unique address to every site that wants your email is great. It’s good for privacy, security as well as for spam protection.

A couple of pictures of the runestone Ög 29 in Tåby in Östergötland. It stands right next to the stone Ög 30 in a small forest by a road crossing in Skjorstad. It’s in gray granite and about 177 cm tall. It’s been moved from the original position, which is believed to be by a small stream a few hundred meters north of where it now stands.

A closer view of the runestone.
A wide shot showing the runestone standing a couple of meters to the right of another runestone in front of a few trees.

This is the runestone Sö 254 in Vansta south of Stockholm. It is one of the 25-30 runestones mentioning the ill fated viking raid by Ingvar the Far-Travelled. There is also a saga about this raid that went far into modern day Georgia.

The inscription:
“Sven and Sten raised the stone in memory of Tosti, their father, who died in Ingvar’s retinue, and in memory of Thorstein, and in memory of Eystein, Alfhildr’s son.”

This is the runestone Sö 92 which stands in the graveyard of Husby-Rekarne church, next to the church wall by the southern gate. The runestone mentions viking travels to the east. It is signed by the carver Balli and made out of sandstone. It's not known where it originally stood, as it was found in a grave in the 17th century. It was then inserted into the church wall, and 200 years later it was removed and and placed where it now stands.

This is Frösöstenen, the northernmost runestone in Sweden (the world?). It mentions the christianization of Jämtland, the only such mention on a Swedish runestone. It’s also the first mention of the region Jämtland. The signum is J RS1928;66. It stands on the island Frösön, which also has an old medieval stone church where they have found the stump of a large tree and lots of animal bones beneath the floor, so it’s believed to be and old viking cultic place.

#runestone #StandingStoneSunday

A slightly wider shot showing the entire stone standing in a grass field.
A photo of the runestone from further away to the left. A street lamp is placed just behind the stone, presumably to illuminate the stone at night. Unfortunately it is an eyesore. Two trees can be seen further behind the stone.
A wide shot of the stone from straight on. Behind the stone is the modern bridge from the island Frösön to the mainland and the city of Östersund.
