A very fun game where you aim to outsmart AI by convincing it that certain philosophical concepts are more closely related than they actually are! 🤖

An imposing figure in the philosophy of mind, whose books on consciousness were among the first I read on the topic, always written in his distinctively clear, illustrative, and engaging style. His passing is a tremendous loss to academia.

Yesterday, I felt a lot of depression or anxiety, like a knot in my chest, and it started overwhelming me somehow. I lost my vision and hearing and passed out, hitting my head on the door. I'm fine now, though. I wonder why something like that happened to me. I'm not usually prone to feeling sad or anxious.

I just got a suspicious email asking me to be a keynote speaker at a neuroscience conference (already a red flag since that's not my field and I'm not a senior academic). As a keynote, I'd have to pay €700 for the registration fee... You know, instead of getting paid or at least having the trip and accommodation covered 😅

Lots of academic scams going around, stay vigilant.

Adobe’s new prototype generative AI tool is the ‘Photoshop’ of music-making and editing

@vanessawynn I'm usually all for #AI, but a part of me is sad because we'll no longer be able to tell, definitively, whether something was created with the help of AI or not... I wonder whether any art form or discipline will remain unaffected, and also whether we should care whether something is human or AI-made...

ninokadic,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@nowan @vanessawynn That's an excellent point, I'll have to think about it. I'm sure there's responsible use of AI, but I'm just worried about low-effort generated content polluting the internet.

Good morning and happy leap day(February 29th) to all of you around the #Fediverse today!

Do any of you have anything special planned for Leap Day today, or is it just another day?

It's usual work stuff here with a meeting at 12pm EST which should be a good one as usual. After that, just email stuff and then hopefully the wife and I can finish catching up on American Idol.

@cliffwade I'm planning on taking a day off, ordering some takeaway, and finding something to watch.. but not because of the leap day, I didn't realise people celebrated it 😅

ninokadic,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade Yeah, did a lot of work yesterday, the whole day, so now I'm just doing nothing. I'm not sure, can't decide between Chinese and Mexican 😄

An acquaintance recommended the 1998 film Dark City to me — a fairly obscure title, and I must say that it's quite good. It plays around with ideas of personal identity and memory, what it means to be human, in a noir sci-fi setting. Warmly recommended! 🍿

I learnt that there's no principle of charity in discussions on the internet, particularly X. Everything one says will be interpreted either through a knee-jerk reaction, or misconstrued and then attacked. Moral of the story — just ignore all comments and speak freely.

Whether you approach it from a left-wing, right-wing, spiritual, or whatever angle, being against academia, higher education, and mistrusting experts is the worst kind of anti-intellectualism that seriously harms society. Full stop.

People will either delegate their tasks to AI and become detached and uninformed, or they'll have a perfectly patient personal instructor that will help them drastically expand their knowledge. Likely, it will be a mix of both, and we should advocate for the latter. It'll be interesting, watching the future unravel.

I noticed that philosophical discussions in Croatia are often based on listing lots of famous names and works, as if the main goal is to impress with erudition. Very rarely do I hear: I think that, or my view is that... To me, that's not philosophy, but merely its history.

I'm starting to rethink my commitment to being detached from philosophical views, treating them as things to entertain and play with without paying heed to them being mine, now that AI is so prevalent. Maybe we should be attached and value individuals and their original ideas because they're a form of creative and personal expression.

(Also, can you tell that I've been thinking about the ethics of AI a lot recently? 😄)

Am I the only one who unequivocally thinks that philosophy has made progress? Perhaps I have a different definition of what progress means, but surely I can't be the only one?

The number of theories and arguments that philosophers uncovered, as well as the clarity and breadth of their analyses, is certainly progress.

@philosophy @academicchatter

ninokadic,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I mean, I think it pretty clearly adds up to a net positive for progress, tbh

ninokadic,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I think most obvious progress is in ethics and political philosophy, at the minimum by expanding the sphere of what it now encompasses: more people groups, animals and the environment, even potential AI, other planets, space exploration, etc.

In consciousness, the most obvious example is cognitive science, which sprang forth from a heavily philosophical background - functionalism, computationalism, multiple realisability thesis, etc.

ninokadic,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter Yeah, though I can only speak from a western perspective, given that that encompasses my interests, at least mostly.

ninokadic,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I think the largest contribution of 'traditional' phenomenology (think Brentano, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty) is recognising certain things about consciousness that then became useful both within and outside of philosophy. For example, embodied cognition is a big buzzword now in cognitive science, robotics, and its direct predecessor was Merleau-Ponty.
