Hello, I'm nfoert!

I'm a programmer in #python, #html, #css, #javascript and a little #cpp. I care a lot about #opensource and #righttorepair.

I'll usually post about the things above plus some of my other interests:

#linux
#ubuntu
#minecraft

Does anyone have any good suggestions for some basic free tier #django server hosting for testing that also supports WebSockets? I was planning on using PythonAnywhere but it looks like they don't support WebSockets right now.

Thanks in advance!

#python #serverhosting

nfoert,

@LucidDan Thank you for sharing! I'm going to go with render.com for now, should be enough for some testing.

Woke up today and videos about #raspberrypi5 from all the big tech channels popped out from youtube news feed. Must have been living under a rock, I wasn't expecting Rpi5 until next year. I was hoping for 6 cores and full size HDMI connector, but you can't win them all. Still exited ... at least we've finally got the power button ... 😎 2 cameras is definitely a plus. And 2-2,5 performance boost (if true), faster memory and GPU, PCIe and SD is awesome.

nfoert,

@PeterSoukup Same thing happened to me, first thing I saw was the Jeff Geerling video.

I'm excited for the PCIe, think of all the possibilities for that.

I was today years old when I discovered that you can create tasks in

Now I don't have to type python manage.py runserver everytime I open my project folder!

nfoert, to ubuntu

I'm pretty excited for the changes in GNOME 45! It's cool to see some quality of life and smaller improvements. I really like the look of the workspace indicator.

https://release.gnome.org/45/

I wanted to ask the #ubuntu people of the Fediverse: I'm running 22.04.3 LTS. Do you upgrade the entire system when new major versions of the distro come avaliable? Does it usually break a lot of things? I'd like to use GNOME 45 when it's included in Ubuntu.

#linux #opensource #GNOME

nfoert,

@levi Thanks for the info, that makes sense. I wish I had known the difference from non-LTS and LTS when I first installed, but we've all been there, right?

From some quick research, it looks like there are ways to upgrade from LTS to non-LTS versions as well, so that may be something for me to look into.

The true power of #linux:
I've got an old computer as a little #minecraft server. #ubuntu is running off of an old HDD, so It's quite slow. I decided to replace #gnome with #xfce, and now It's very snappy.
Also it was one command and then a reboot.
Now It's #xubuntu!
It's still not great when I'm running apps, but at least I can use the Terminal and files without lagging. 😄️

Can you do that with #windows?

#foss #opensource #linux

nfoert,

@adamsdesk
...Not sure why I didn't think of that, but I definitely should! Thanks for the idea.

Rajiv, to windows

is there a free software for windows that will let you record your screen? trying to see what are my options to show how to do something by actually doing it and converting it to video.

#windows #screencapture

nfoert,

@Rajiv Like others, I recommend OBS Studio. It's a lot more powerful, letting you change video encoding and recording settings (fps, resolution)
I know you said that you discovered that the snipping tool can do it as well, but wanted to +1 OBS. :D

I’ve been trying to build a community around #circles, but I’ve been having some trouble getting people interested.

Is there something about my toots that are off-putting?
Or should I instance-hop to something like fosstodon?
Or are there just better places to talk about my projects?

Please boost for a larger reach, I’d like to hear your feedback.

#django #python #html #css #javascript #development

nfoert,

@tikhonov_a Hey thanks for the feedback!
I don’t really like the supporter thing either, but I don’t really see any other option for being able to afford servers or a domain. Do you have any other ideas for this?
As for the license and setup stuff, you’re right, I totally should have done that already and overlooked it. I’ll make sure to do that later or tommorow.
I appreciate you taking the time to write this out, I didn’t really realize how suspicious it might come off as.

nfoert,

@tikhonov_a That all makes sense. Thanks for your thoughts and advice.

I do understand that making something similar to mastodon might not be a good idea, but I don't really know what else I would work on. Do we have a list or space where people are discussing the things that are missing from open source?
I would still like to at least get my project to a mostly working state so I can learn a bit more about web development, but I would like to help contribute to the open source community.

nfoert,

@tikhonov_a That's true. I was planning on finding some repositories for #hacktoberfest and general contribution, maybe #mastoson will be my first one.

@mcfly I expect the user would be more likely to mess up your install than a virus.

is surprisingly unresponsive compared to Windows. Launching programs can take 5-10 seconds (with no indication that anything is happening). Resizing a window sometimes resizes the frame and then takes a second to fill in the contents. Even the internet seems slow to respond.

Some of this might be due to the fact that Ubuntu is running off a physical hard drive while Windows was running off an SSD, but that doesn't seem sufficient to explain it.

I would have expected to get more performance without Microsoft constantly uploading data. Does this match anyone else's experience? Any ideas?

nfoert,

@peterdrake I don't know, I've had a pretty big difference between a HDD and an SSD as well when it comes to responsiveness.

My fresh Ubuntu install says I need some updates. Okay, but there are some problems.

First, it tells me to close the snap-store to update it, but the snap-store is not open.

#ubuntu #linux #TheDualbootening

nfoert,

@peterdrake I had to do this the other day. I don't remember what I did for certain but I'm pretty sure I ran "killall snap-store" and then did the "snap update snap-store" (Or whatever the command is, don't remember off the top of my head)

I've been using #Syncthing for the last year or 2 on my #Windows computer and #Android phone, but I recently moved to #Linux. So naturally, I need to redo everything.

Not that I am necessarily looking for something else, I live Syncthing, just because I am going through the effort. Does someone else recommend something similar?

I currently don't have the setup to create a #Nextcloud instance. Thus, Syncthing was a great solution. I just want to see what else #opensource has to offer.

nfoert,

@Stark9837 I use Syncthing on linux, too. Since you're allergy using it, why switch to something else? (I always have to look up the apt instructions. If you're on debian: https://apt.syncthing.net/)

From time to time I think about working on a #Python #ImageBrowser (that can show me metadada I have added to some of my images with the source code of the sketch that generated each).

I've seen quite a few #tkinter and #PySimpleGUI examples, but they all look at a single folder, I'd like something that could show multiple folders at once (ideally with the option to collapse sub-folders). PyQt is to daunting for me.

Would you know of any project I could study?

nfoert,

@villares If you’re using PyQt5, this tool is a big time saver. It’s not that clear on how to import what you’ve created in the designer into your project so if you have any questions I’d be happy to help.

https://build-system.fman.io/qt-designer-download

nfoert,

@villares Give it a try! I've always wanted to play around with Wine, maybe I'll test in a VM later.

nfoert,

@villares There was something unappealing about fbs to me, I think It was when I was first thinking about my project I was not sure it was going to be open source and I didn't want to pay for a fbs license. I've had a good experience with pyinstaller and InnoSetup if you want to give that a try, but fbs might be good too. It's also not that clear on how to use it so I'd be happy to help out if you need it.
https://pypi.org/project/pyinstaller/
https://jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php

nfoert,

@villares That's a cool looking package, I'll have to keep it in mind.

It looks like if you want to make a commercial project, use the latest version of python and / or use PyQt6 you need a licence. You should be able to use it just fine for now.

nfoert, to Minecraft

Yesterday I moved my #minecraft server from my #raspberrypi to an old computer which I setup for dual booting windows and #ubuntu. Now I need to make sure there's nothing left on the pi before I install #homeassistant...

nfoert,

@mikemccaffrey It worked well enough on 1.19.4. At most there was like 4 people online and TPS was usually 18-20. Updating to 1.20 significantly dropped performance with 10-15 TPS when 4 people were online, hence the switch to the old PC I had lying around.

I'm not sure why the performance dropped so significantly, considering I was using paper had the render distance set to 10 or so, and had a plugin that stacked multiple entities together, but oh well.

nfoert, to CSS

ChatGPT just taught me something incredible:
You can do font-size: 1.2vw instead of the messy @media@mastodon.social screen and (max-width: 768px) {

Changing the vw results in larger or smaller font based on screen size! What else would you use this for?

#css #chatgpt

nfoert,

@keithjgrant Thanks. I had a couple other people clamp would be a bit better too, I’ll have to give calc a try as well.
