So the solar water heating strategy worked pretty good for the time of day. After cooking the birria, I put in a pot of water (only one at a time can fit in the Global Sun Oven). After that got hot enough & I remembered to check, I put that pot outside in the sun to keep warm while putting a fresh pot in the sun oven.

Both were hot even after the sun went behind the trees and fence towards sundown.

Not boiling, but hotter than mildly hot for dishes. No GHGs needed to heat it.

Even though I never cooked when I was living in Southeast Asia (you.. really don’t need to), paying attention to food procurement and techniques helped me level up when I started cooking when I left that region.

(Eating street food there is often cheaper than buying ingredients and cooking yourself. In almost all SEA cities)

There’s a lot of stuff I felt I just ‘knew’ because I was around people who dealt with food all the time

@skinnylatte While browsing Cornell University Press' sale on history books yesterday, I saw this title. It looks interesting. Focuses on NYC Chinatown food network. https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9780801456862/from-farm-to-canal-street/

You know, design contests as a means of avoiding paying designers suck in general. But at least some of them offer a cash prize.

I just saw one where the "prize" is that your design is on all their merchandise. That's it. Uh...that's the whole point of your contest - to get design without paying for it!

It is a straight line from this kind of stuff to people using art/design without consent to train AI to put artists/designers further at disadvantage.

Hmm... was pondering a bicycle ride to the donut shop to get some exercise in and thinking that would be cross-purpose to the whole activity. 😂

My cycling range now has expanded and there are four donut shops I could select from, LOL.

@ai6yr You'd have to choose one far away to get even close to the calorie exchange, but not during a heatwave, please! Keep safe.

@ai6yr I've learned that climate change is messing with the models they've been using. So I check the forecast and status frequently when making plans.

meganL,
@meganL@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr Yeah. I'm really trying to change habits to acclimate (so to speak). I think the general public needs more education as to what's happening with models and how we all need to make changes in our habits (as well as some cultural things...like cooking things outside to keep the heat out) to deal with what's here already and what's to come.

Frozen birria out in the Global Sun Oven, which I put out about 10 min before I put the meat in. It was 300 F (148.8 C) at that time.

I added a TJs mix of orzo, lentils, etc. to stretch the meat & its sauce so I have more for the money.

This takes advantage of the brutal heat today AND keeps the heat of cooking it out of my kitchen/trailer.

🧵 2nd time in a week I've asked an abled person (no disabled licence or placard) to move from a disabled parking space and been faced with belligerence instead.

Guy was sitting in the driver's seat playing on his phone. His first response was, "If a disabled person comes, I'll move". I had just parked in another spot because he was there, but I didn't want to say that because, as I told him, "That's not how the law works".

He sat there silently daring me to do anything.

Public water fountains.

Public swimming pools.

@ai6yr This would be an interesting community participation thing here - everyone post screenshots of your YouTube recommendations.

Honestly, YouTube is so repetitive in its recommendations to me (including pushing right wing adjacent or right wing stuff I'm NEVER interested in) that I'd probably learn more new interesting things through an online thing like this than their own system.

We have got to get off using potable water to flush toilets. I'd say we need to get off using water toilets altogether, but I don't think some folks are ready for that conversation.

Fresh clean water has already gotten scarcer. Treating water only to use it to flush shit down is a really warped thing our society does.

@battusphilenor It really bothers me how many people (including legislators, I guess) seem to think solar needs to happen in centralized locations. We've got plenty of buildings solar could be on and that would put it closer to where it's used. But that would mean less profit for utilities, so...
