Some app developers complain about getting in their issue trackers, issues specific to a distro, or a distro packaging issue.

But several distros have their own bug trackers for package issues. Some like debian recommend to report to the distro first.

Makes me think that maybe software stores like software could indicate in the application issues section something like:

This application is provided via your distro's repositories. Report any issues to distro bug tracker first.

maryjane,

Currently #gnome software uses the appstream info to indicate where to report issues.
But that always points to the upstream repo.

So the signal given is to always report upstream regardless of the package being distributed, via distro repos or flatpak or snap.

So it only makes the situation of app devs that do not want to get reports about distro specific issues only worse. IMO

maryjane,

@bragefuglseth sure. It can be done with downstream patches.

But a honest question, I am curious about that:

Would it not be possible for gnome software to do something like:

If installed package is a distro package, then; replace issues field with generic message to report bug at distro issue tracker?

Even if it leaves out the link to that issue tracker and distro name.

gnome software already does checks on if the installed app is from repo or flatpak.

maryjane,

@bragefuglseth

"and it's (unfortunately) impossible to programatically determine if an app accepts distro package issues as well"

If this is an issue, then it is might an issue for a distro packager to edit the appstream info about reporting tickets.

Because they cannot do this programmatically.

maryjane,

@drewdevault using the term "restrictive" for copyleft licenses/Free Software Licenses is something straight out of "newspeak".

Since when is assuring that everyone has the same rights and obligations "restrictive"?

A Windows user, a Mac user, and a Linux user walk into a bar.

➡️ The #Windows user orders a beer and gets into a fight over how bloated the selection is.

➡️ The #Mac user orders the most expensive single-origin craft cocktail and smugly admires its minimalist design.

➡️ The #Linux user installs a whole brewery in the corner and declares free drinks for everyone, but then spends the rest of the night explaining why their homemade brew is objectively superior.

maryjane,

@nixCraft And the linux user will also explain the 30 different ways to build the brewery...

maryjane,

@Qkall how does it impact a call quality?

@technomad

maryjane,

@Qkall yeah, I can make calls. Sound is a bit low, but it works :)

Both use the underlying stack:
gnome-session, g-c-c, network and modem manager, etc.
And both follow the gnome design patterns for mobile.
But the shell's themselves, gnome-shell and phosh are different, phosh is written in gtk and gnome-shell is not.
So sharing code between the two shells is hard.

In praise of the @postmarketOS release upgrade package: postmarketos-release-upgrade

It's a really solid package.

I had some initial errors in updating the #pmos release on my op6 from v23.06 to v23.12 and it failed to generate initramfs.

postmarketos-release-upgrade script picked up the error and auto magically fixed it (with apk fix) so the release upgrade ended up completing properly.

Not having to fix a system after a release upgrade is quality of life :)

Nice job #pmos team.

This is handy

maryjane,

@linmob It is cool. I wonder how hard would be to merge it with flatseal to have only one app to manage flatpak apps.

@vascorsd na altura não gostei. Doce de morango e açucar em pó.

I use gpodder to subscribe to video channels on different services (youtube, #peertube, etc), using. Youtube is a pain, it is always a game of catching up because from time to time, they change stuff and that breaks yt-dlp.

Peertube is a breeze, never had an issue with #peertube in gpodder.

When your policy is to not have a closed silo, these problems do not exist. Or if they do exist, it's by accident.

Twitter is threatening legal action against Meta over Threads

in November, Elon Musk mocked laid off Twitter employees, saying “their immense talent will no doubt be of great use elsewhere”

well, apparently some went to Meta to build Threads & Musk now has a problem with that

Many linux on mobile distros like postmarketos, mobian, pureos, and I guess manjaro, do have recent kernels like 6.2 or 6.3 because it is still a fast moving space.

imo the issues are hardware enablement, not exactly "having the latest driver", but "making the driver" or hardware enablement first, then upstreaming it.

Instead of complaining about app developers and Flatpak, maybe it's time Linux based OS developers focus on moving forward with things they are responsible for:

  • Home encryption
  • Authenticated boot
  • Read-only /
  • Atomic upgrades

It's 2023 and I still can't install and leave Linux unattended to family members and friends.

Flatpak solves real problem and it only gets better with time because it is the right infrastructure for apps on Linux.

#Flatpak #Linux

maryjane,

@sonny

<1/2>

the person that you are replying to IS an app developer. And has made several applications for linux.

Also there are already distros that do home encryption. There are methods for authenticated boot in linux but not via systemd (HEADS and Pureboot), there are distros that can do unattended-upgrades.

Your list above corresponds to a vision of what you and several others consider a distro should be and with what tools it should be done.

maryjane,

@sonny

<2/2>

Nothing wrong with that.

But last I checked distros projects also have the right to make their decisions. Since they are the ones that have the actual work of creating and maintaining their distros.

The only thing that an attitude of „do as I say“, or of “Distros get in your lane” gets is throwing gasoline on a fire.

maryjane,

@sonny

I know the article that you where replying and the author is.

I stated that the author of that article is also an app developer.

And I did not directly quoted you; did not stated you said those words;

I said; "attitude of", then I wrote that part.

"is complaining about what others are doing"

So you complained back, only about distros?

Every time an app developer complains about distros, they are also complaining about what others are doing.

maryjane, to random Portuguese

Whenever I read about folks moving their #flatpak apps and libs to a Sd card to free up space in their #linuxonmobile phones, because the runtimes can take a lot of space, I think about the Android user story with moving all the Android apps you can to the SD card.
