Are there any tech news sites that have a critical and detached look at tech?

The Google IO coverage all seems as if it was written by Google PR people.

Which is odd as I follow some of these folks and they are much more critical online.

lolzac,

@jake4480 I read some coverage today that was in direct opposition to the public comments made by some of the same authors on Mastodon and other social media.

Here is the Hard Truth about #automotive software.

If it…

Looks like this; and
Has apps like this; and
Has pop-up notifications like this; and
Has widgets like this; and
Has distracting color palettes like this; and
Has small font sizes like this; and
Entertains people like this…

it is unsafe.

Full stop.

I could care less what consumers want. Consumers cannot appreciate systems safety. Regulators and systems safety experts should be making the calls.

lolzac,

@adamjcook What happened to the heads up projection systems?

On our bike maintenance shift today there was a new guy and he almost crushed my hand because he didn’t know what he was doing.

I’m fine. I yelled at him quick enough and got my hand out of that spot with just a few scratches but that could have gone far worse.

When you’re new to a type of work, please don’t go off doing shit on your own without coordinating with others. Otherwise you risk serious injury for yourself or others.

Like, I can go do things I parallel with the guy I often work together on these bikes because we’re a good team after over a year. We each do the same things every time so there’s no surprises. We’re faster together and it’s safe because we know how to not interfere with each other while working on the same bike. A new person on the group doesn’t have that.

lolzac,

@esther Glad you’re okay

Big get for my StarCraft2 collection

Now what do I do with it?

#starcraft2

lolzac,

@Oldmantoast @heyfluxay Hug it. Often

lolzac,

@heyfluxay @Oldmantoast “Crease”. Yes. We must not “crease” it.

Home.social is going to be shutting down. Any suggestions for a new home that is filled with happy weirdos?

I can’t seem to get #cleanshotX to reliably show my webcam when video recording. I’ve tried my #mac webcam and an LG display webcam and all I see is a black screen with a loading animation. Privacy and settings have camera enabled. #macOS

lolzac,

@krishnadraws Has it worked in the past?

IIRC a lot of video “windows” on computers are drawn outside of the normal UI system to make them faster and able to handle quicker refreshes.

The far north is burning—and turning up the heat on the planet

The Arctic and surroundings are being transformed from carbon sink to carbon emitter.

lolzac,

@arstechnica Are those fire damaged or are they the result of a pine beetle infestation? Difficult to tell with that photo

Apparently I can now disassemble, bleed, and adjust hydraulic brakes without any issue. This was something I wouldn’t have attempted on my own last summer. Practice works. ☺️

lolzac,

@esther Yay! That must have a lot of messy steps

Currently stuck in A&E for the last 2hrs. Eldest child may have a broken foot.

The in-house Costa has no internet access, so can’t take cards, same with the over-priced vending machine in the waiting room.

We are tired, hungry/thirsty and bored as hell.

#hospital #NeedCoffee

lolzac,

@onlinegoddess Hope everything turns out well.

lolzac,

@onlinegoddess Any updates? Is the foot okay? Did you find coffee?

lolzac,

@onlinegoddess @t3kk Well at least they are okay. Feet are tricky. We have evolved to walk on them even with breaks. Good on you for waiting it out

lolzac,

@onlinegoddess Thank goodness for that!

Scanner I've mentioned, super duper wip, technical hard parts solved, next step is to make it look good.

@JanOrszulik These videos have been such a daily treat

This is a really, really dumb thing to do on the part of the #CBC.

It plays right into #Musk’s hands and damages your journalistic credibility more than if you did not initially suspend your #Twitter activity in the first place.

Obviously, nothing has changed in terms of #PressFreedom and editorial interference over the past month on Twitter - if anything, it has become far worse.

Really dumb.

lolzac,

@adamjcook @snoda Their news site was overhauled to be focused on “engagement” and social media traffic a long time ago. I suspect that their traffic took a big hit without Twitter and some VP had a hissy fit

lolzac,

@adamjcook I sent an email to comment but I don’t think I’ll hear back from them about it.

If you’re starting a social media thing and you need to limit access at first, you could:

  1. Open a waiting list and let people in a few at a time.
  2. Require invitations from existing users.

I suggest that the first is good and the second is bad, because it means you are starting as a private club for like-minded people who know one another.

lolzac,

@JamesGleick A writer for The Atlantic seems to be of the opinion that the “country club” status of Bluesky is why so many people are excited about it

I haven’t had a Facebook account since 2011.

I have a question about it. Is there a way to do long form posts? Think of blogging, but on that disgusting site.

I’m curious because it seems a natural fit for blogging tools if such a thing exists.

Would I support it if I had a blogging product? Most likely. Gotta make a living.

lolzac,

@fahrni Open a Wordpress.com account and blog from there. Facebook is a cesspool. And it doesn’t really have any good long form writing tools.

lolzac,

@fahrni Nope. It’s horrible for even short posts

lolzac,

@chanezon @cory Is there a way to search for the code you posted to Github that was used to train copilot?

Some folks asked about Codeberg so here is a blog post about some of my reasons for moving

lolzac,

@jake4480 It has all the parts I need and none of the BS.

@jake4480 I should have left when I saw the achievement icons

I have this weird feeling in my gut, that if we stop ranking and comparing pop culture things for fun, we might develop our brains into being more cooperative minded and more willing to see the benefits of diversity as an asset, not sets for shallow comparison.

This might just help save us quicker.

lolzac,

@forschungstorte @konstantin I wonder why that type of content is popular? Does it just drive “engagement” on social media as people argue about it?
