I have complicated feelings regarding #Usenet and #NNTP due to some server-centric aspects.

Granted due to message #gossip the death of any given instance isn't catastrophic and moving is largely unnoticeable, but it still puts some hurdles on usability in adverse conditions.

It still fulfills most of the #AsynchronousCommunication characteristics handily, but that's still a nagging thought, since /most/ instances demand fairly high-uptime to peer and don't allow such instability from peers.

Occasional restating that I hate how houses and apartments have all those easily broken-through windows these days.

Forget the security door, if your window is a single brick away from no longer existing and easily letting a human through, you've got other problems.

lispi314, to Lisp

Kind of amused #Lisp has both wizards and high-tech aliens in its imagery.

Makes for a fun mix.

lispi314, to emacs

@valvin As no one federating with my instance has currently posted (surprisingly), I pull new stuff in ' very frequently.

Whether I find time on a daily basis to read it (all or partly) varies too much to really say.

lispi314, to random

Man I hate , bunch of rentier fuckwads.

when?

There's no point in standards no one can use because they're too expensive to read or patent-encumbered.

is interesting, but while it makes possible open relays (in the -relay sense) obviating the dependency on much static infrastructure for message emission, reception remains a problem.

Is there a reception counterpart to it?

lispi314, to fediverse

I really can't help but look at this whole blocklist drama with some amusement tinged with exasperation.

Anyone who has done remotely any reading on #P2P systems and #federated systems just has that flaw jump to their eyes when the state of #ActivityPub implementations is seen, and in general how no importance is given to #AsynchronousCommunication communication in the spec and nearly as little to P2P use.

Basically, what did you expect? Of course it'll devolve into petty fiefdoms.

lispi314, to cnc

Interestingly, custom #glassware from #CAD files, while a thing, seems not to have gotten the cheap #CNC or #3DPrinter treatment.

That is somewhat vexing, it seemed like my best bet for food-safe stuff.

You know, one of the issues with that "taking a walk out of earshot of people or devices to talk privately is safer than encrypted communications" is that if just the overt & obvious association required to do this is already enough to be a problem, it doesn't work.

lispi314, to hardware

It's amazing and horrifying how many devs I speak to who don't realize how much their and reliability assumptions involve, or that their disregard of some things as inconsequential isn't a decision for them to make, it is for the user to determine the actual importance of anything lost from a malfunction.

They don't like that because it puts a much higher burden of care than they want to bother with.

lispi314, to emacs

Setup an older monitor for some stuff, I can definitely confirm that in #Emacs, "GOOG-Noto Sans Mono" is a /lot/ fuzzier than "DejaVu Sans Mono".

Okay I guess you had nothing important to say after all.

lispi314, to mastodon

It looks like the newer versions of #Mastodon had some work done for mitigating the memory requirements.

That's good. It's still vastly more than #Emacs but it's no longer "forget leaving this open on a cheap netbook for more than half a day".

lispi314, to random

@aral By the way, I think your RSS feed might be broken.

It doesn't contain any article newer than the 2023-02-20 Kitten Chat one.

lispi314, to random

Pretty annoyed by folks implying that corposcum systems are accessible, smooth or comfortable to use.

Try and disable the malware features they added to them and see how long that user-friendliness lasts.

Good luck even managing to get far enough into the internals to do that without having to start disassembling and injecting shit.

But even without that, most of them want you to interact in their specific way and customizing it is usually strictly limited or very annoying.

In case the #SquidProxy security audit (https://mastodon.sdf.org/@ParadeGrotesque/111218095926190827 https://megamansec.github.io/Squid-Security-Audit/) has you a bit stressed, remember that #nginx does support acting as a caching reverse-proxy, so depending on your use-case that could be a viable replacement.

Regarding , screw the old -centric non approach btw.

Both and suck.

Program crashed while you were modifying a mail? Who knows what the on-disk file looks like now. You had it git-versioned? Good. If all goes well and git or the computer itself doesn't crash while updating things, that might be enough.

Even key-value like do it better, and they did so before even existed.

So why can't I have tools using DBs?

lispi314, to emacs

If you think uses too much memory, for example after accidentally opening one large file, and then see it not releasing it?

If you're using Emacs 29.1 or later (and GNU libc), you might get some use out of this snippet in your configuration.

(when (symbol-function 'malloc-trim)
(add-hook 'post-gc-hook #'malloc-trim))

edit: If you already used this, make sure the first argument to add-hook is a quoted symbol.

lispi314, to EyeHealth

Some people consider the breathability of N95s to be a benefit, but considering that it manages to fog-up my glasses (the design was really not made with masks in mind and it shows, I'll get different ones next time) anyway (if to a much lesser degree than masks which don't seal on my face, but the top still breathes as much as the rest of it), I find proper reusable respirators do much better at completely doing away with the fogging-up issue.

Mir is still alive? Huh. Apparently Canonical is hiring for work on it.

Thanks Debian.

Apropos of nothing, does Xorg or Wayland have touchscreen support these days?

I've been thinking it'd be cool to have a sort of control panel for something and was wondering if it was really necessary to use more than just the display device itself for it.

lispi314, to random

Looks like it needs repeating: Don't bring your personal phone or computer to a protest.

If you bring a device (and you probably shouldn't), at least make sure it has no privileged data nor access to any of your stuff. Ideally keep it truly off (removable battery) or in a Faraday bag.

Individual mobile network connecting devices can be tracked as they move between antennas.

Remember, anyone that approves of the #DMCA is not someone worthy of any respect nor should you ever render them aid.

If you can deny them business and interaction, do so.

lispi314, to random

It boggles the mind that destruction of thousands of functional non-faulty drives isn't accompanied by proportionate fines for the creation of unnecessary #EWaste caused by inadequate precautions leading to the need to even generate said e-waste in the first place.

Even if the shredding company recycles the drive components, that's still magnitudes more wasteful than reusing the drives directly when they still work fine.

And most such components require a lot of reprocessing when shredded.
