Learning to make onigiri. These are smoked salmon (triangle) or spicy vegetable (round). What would you put in them? Bonus points for vegetarian/fish, and for plausibly medieval.

@phiala Pretty much anything pickled would work for me.

@disappearinjon Don't know. Naively translated, the word seems to be an unloaded term for a woman from Bohemia. But in context, referring to a wandering black woman, there may have been some negative implication because of widespread prejudice against the Romany. I believe there are many connotations to the word in French that have nothing to do with Bohemia or even to the English usage "bohemian".

In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines
lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.

In two straight lines they broke their bread
    and brushed their teeth
    and went to bed.

    They smiled at the good
    and frowned at the bad
and sometimes they were very sad.

They left the house at half past nine
    in two straight lines
    in rain
    or shine--
    the smallest one was Madeline.

    @rolle@mementomori.social avatar

Just noticed Bluesky doesn't ACTUALLY add the alt text in the img itself. This is a big mistake and makes the service very inaccessible.

The text is actually in the very last part of the DOM (Document Object Model) tree... and is triggered via click. So, if the screen reader doesn't support JavaScript same way than for the seeing people, descriptive text is nowhere to be found. Even when it is, it can't be accessed easily.

@blobcat @rolle Do people actually still know HTML? That's only 50% snide.

@Jon_Danger Of course all landlords are awful. They may not all start that way, but the position coarsens and degrades any human qualities they may have.

No, Musk will not get away with charging a fee to use Twitter. There are still enough people who realize that handing their credit cards and physical addresses over to him is one of the most foolish things they could ever do. Never mind that the rancid site isn't worth paying for.

I've been thinking about how speculative elements are sometimes clearly real in a story, sometimes clearly metaphor, sometimes clearly both, and sometimes--this is the one I'm most thinking--in a space between metaphorical and actual. That in-between space used to annoy the piss out of me (always a matter of taste, of course!), but now maybe I'm starting to appreciate it. There's maybe a different sort of magic in the in-between.

Agree about those kung fu movies.

If it's a whimsical story that's there just to connect the fights, it's different from a serious drama that can be derailed by a big pointless fight scene.

For example of one of those period films, Five Deadly Venoms was ridiculously silly, but superb. However the extended pointless fight near the end of Gideon of the Ninth carried no emotion with it and derailed the narrative.

@laurence I just read Houseproud and it's the best short form science fiction I've read in years. Your dialogue is top notch. May I have your permission to post it on the community magazine I mod - @13thFloor?

@Arotrios Sure, go ahead. It's been reprinted several times already. You can link my website, https://laurencebrothers.com.

I like the story myself, but I'm a little surprised it's gotten so much traction. I suppose there's something about Domus's earnest sweetness that appeals....
