My first book (an unconventional memoir about rebuilding, connection to the land, the past and to oneself) should be out next year!

I got my Spotify wrapped recently and it was almost identical to 2022 (a year of lazy listening) and completely lacking some of my most favourite genres.

So, if you have the time, I'd love some suggestions of Classical music to listen to. Old, new, opera, just anything you enjoy. Playlists welcome too.

Thank you in advance.

I've been so busy/overwhelmed by the state of the world. Hard to balance just getting on with life with the horrors and injustice I see everywhere. I'm sure so many of you are feeling the same thing.

So, here's an image that makes me feel very calm and peaceful. I hope it does the same for you.

Being a woman within the male dominated world of drystone is hard. How wonderful it is to see my good friend (although we have never met) & fellow female drystone waller in this huge ad for McVities (10s in)

So proud of Tara for putting herself out there, way outside of her comfort zone.

Go follow Tara on Instagram for the most wholesome, happy making content, including stone walls, a pet chicken named Bhuna, and many cow pals.

Went out for a while, came back, and asked my eight year old what she had been doing.

'Circling fruits I like,' she said.

Just a thought...

I don't know why a 16 year old would fell the Sycamore Gap tree, but I do know that all children have ever witnessed is nature treated as a commodity, everything else prioritised above the natural environment. The blame for this act doesn't really lie with one child.

It is sad. I was sad too, but trees are felled all the time, the natural environment around us plundered and spoiled. Get that sad/angry every day! And not with children, get angry on behalf of the children.

@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@mckennas Yep, I would be very surprised if a teenager did it. I've just seen so much hate and anger towards a kid, I was trying to offer a different perspective.

@MyKomment I'm definitely watching with interest....very odd as you say

When I say, 'I don't really like other people' that's less a comment on 'other people' and more a comment on how I feel when I'm around them.

My mum was telling me yesterday that she has a strong affinity with trees. I love trees, but my strongest affinity is with rocks. In a world I find so incredibly overwhelming, rocks seem to absorb so much of that unwanted, chaotic energy and create a grounded and calming space.

Black and white photograph of a cracked Rick face. Small sections of barnacles punctuate the image, and in the top right corner is some textured seaweed and an area of barnacles

kristiedegaris,
@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@Scatterseed I also love that. A different feeling to what rocks provide, though. Was in the sea yesterday for the first time in ages, and it was pretty blissful. Had Colin Hay's Beautiful World in my head,

'My, my, my, it's a beautiful world.
I like swimming in the sea.
I like to go on beyond the white breakers,
where a man can still be free.
Or a woman if you are one.
I like swimming in the sea'

It's wonderful to be able to 'recycle' stone. On this job, we were able to reinstate this small entrance wall using stone from the original mill building that once stood next to the river.

We added a flat cope to the wall, and as I was building, a group of walkers came down the hill, stopped to chat, and posed for photos sitting on this little seat. How lovely!

A drystone wall runs from a tall copper beech tree towards the roof of a cottage. The scene is quaint.
A drystone wall with a break in the cope stones. The stones are tightly stacked and behind the wall are trees.

People always ask me what's happening in the chapter I'm currently working on...

Well, this chapter is about the realisations/events that led to me moving in with my two ex-husbands. Oh, also, my experiences of a global pandemic and its parallels with my experiences in sobriety.

Also, some drystone, and working in a male-dominated, traditional craft with very untraditonal ideas.
