In the US, most Boomers retired with a pension. The next generation, Gen X, was the first to enter the workforce with retirement plans that were less stable (e.g., 401k's) and that put the onus of planning and management on the individual. They are, as a generation, now pretty well screwed when it comes to retirement.

This isn't a bug. It's a feature.

@tdverstynen I am the last yr Gen X, now looking back all the fairy tales that Boomer told eg work hard play hard and the world is ur oyster stuff...are rather irresponsible ethics that got us all in this mess , while for those who still alive are still jetting away contributing all the CO2 emissions, well done guys well done

I know this is not Linkedin, but I’m curious: what are the tools that help your personal the most?

[.] What works for me:

+] this basic pomodoro from @clive: http://text-pomodoro.glitch.me/ when I really need to focus

+] Zotero as a reference manager: https://www.zotero.org/, I would be lost without it

+] Github (desktop): my coding became much more focused, organized and reusable thanks to it: https://desktop.github.com/

+] GanttProject to realize how little time I have left… : https://www.ganttproject.biz/#is-easy

[.] What I tried but didn’t work for me:

-] Tasks “manager”: tried Obsidian, One Note, Google Keep, Notebook… I can’t seem to find The One that works for me (and syncs with my laptop & phone). Taking suggestions!

-] Something to read and annotate pdfs: I got a Remarkable2 tablet, and then an Onyx Boox Note Air 2, and they’re just too slow and do not easily sync with my laptop and Zotero. For the most important papers I have to say I might prefer paper.. Also taking suggestions for this.

Edit: trying to make the bullet points not disappear in is still hard

Same here Google calendar used to work beautifully for me but it all fell apart becus that my uni block calendar and work email share so I am forced to use MS outlook and calendar system to organise my work, which is impossible without negotiating it with private life, so rather than keeping two unsync calendars I shared my Google calendar with work ones 😔

Lots of stuff this week between ridiculous #COP28 and #US vetoing the #UNSC ceasefire resolution in Gaza. One of the saddest thoughts is the realisation that our voting choices are always between “overt white supremacy” or “covert white supremacy”, the latter co-opting the oppresses’ language and twisting and adjusting it in rhetorical performances as it better suits them.
In the light of all these events, I must say that clinging to any hope is a very difficult act of resistance

Contemplating energy consumption after my training course on ESD (education for sustainability development): stock keeping require monthly labour, food resources and energy, cryogenic procedure are developing to reduce these, with the recovery rate still improving. For culture lab, do you have a figure on the difference between continuous cell passage VS cryogenics storage? Intuition is the latter is better with energy, but do we have data for this?

@albertcardona I see, still interested in understanding the waste reduction aspects of it, the only facility I have being, that uses glass to fly stock keeping is #DeptGeneticsCambridge; seeing bags after bags of old fly plastic vials going into incineration is just nerving for me (most of other places do not have staff salaries for glass cleaning)

Commute is at the mercy of the #UK #train operators. I am amazed by how much it is hanging by a thread (finance and infrastructure) but still provides a reasonable level of service; I was meant to take 0627 train to catch a 0642 connection, arrived at the station 0613, yet caught the delayed 0612...arriving my connection station to find out my original 0642 is cancelled but 0625 connection is late so I caught that one. Would be disaster! if I stuck to my plan..why the two operators late in sync?

thanks for everyone that votes and responded to this poll about when spared and limited fund is available what would we recruit as a small research lab: postdocs, technicians or PhD students; I had each options exclusive just to get a sense of preference as first instincts.
You would notice multiple PhD students and Technician are level pecking. Seemingly reflects the desire of most lab: manpower (PhD opt) vs sustainability (tech opt). 1/4

I find amazing how universities overwhelm their academic staff with bureaucracy, transforming ever more research and education into managerial issues, while administration keeps being in total chaos, constantly making mistakes. HR in particular, it's one of the poorest corner. A university I've been working with has made the mistake of overpaying me twice (I raised doubt the 2nd time and they dismissed it), & now coming back more than a month after I left to ask me to pay back.
