If you’re in Singapore, like din tai fung, but don’t like how crowded / expensive their restaurants get: here’s a hawker stall that does functionally the same food for $4ish. Will also be crowded, but it won’t be $40

(I believe the chef used to work at DTF)

@skinnylatte wow, I see, I was very excited to find DTF opening at London just before pandemics but never tried yet

I have been wondering what is the perception of having non-romanised names in the authorship of papers? I've seen Chinese/Taiwanese authors doing this with their #Hanzi names. Admittedly, I did this for my 🦣 handle. But visually using #Hanzi is much easier to differentiate two names when they looks similar in romanised forms:
Chen 陳 vs. Cheng 程

Shout out to my fellow biologist/geneticist/neuroscientist, do you have notes and write your papers like this?

I don't and I hardly take notes any more for anything...I laid the data in front of me and used them as triggers to my memories to related literatures....this part is not very methodic..if I had notes for my thoughts, it could speed up the process better..

@steveroyle 😔 research traveling is so expensive (both carbon and money) but having face-to-face interaction is so much more superior

#Sustainability #lablife
Contemplating energy consumption after my training course on ESD (education for sustainability development): #Drosophila stock keeping require monthly labour, food resources and energy, cryogenic procedure are developing to reduce these, with the recovery rate still improving. For #cell culture lab, do you have a figure on the difference between continuous cell passage VS cryogenics storage? Intuition is the latter is better with energy, but do we have data for this?

I am glad to say I passed my #probation. it doesnt mean much in the current UK university climate. But at least my job is secure (for now). When I started the post in the mid of pandemic, I was rather pathemistic about this, thanks to our dept (Genetics and Genome Biology) seniors and @NeurogeneticsLeicester , I was helped all the way through from getting grants, teaching and setting up lab, recruiting lab members. #lablife #academicchatter
now it is time to do my year one #researchfish😱

10 years or so ago I went to Australia and saw that the big thing was bao buns. Now it’s finally caught up here. Like bubble tea and good coffee the UK is roughly a decade behind Australian culinary trends. https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/20/sales-of-bao-buns-on-a-roll-as-britons-fall-in-love-with-asian-treat

@CatherineFlick I know this is about the up picking of mainstream dinning, and I've never been to Australia but I wonder if this is simply reflecting there is a bigger East Asian community there than UK?
Btw the next trend will be Taiwanese/Japanese rice ball😋

#climatecrisis #train
My PhD student was planning a conference trip to the Netherlands in June, I said "please check the Eurostar and if there is not too much price difference please use it instead of flights", they then checked with our finance team using dept credit card and told me yesterday " gosh Eurostar is half of price than flying! I just booked it!"....that is very pleasantly surprising for me, was there effort put in place to subsidise #EU train that I didnot know?

Commute is at the mercy of the #UK #train operators. I am amazed by how much it is hanging by a thread (finance and infrastructure) but still provides a reasonable level of service; I was meant to take 0627 train to catch a 0642 connection, arrived at the station 0613, yet caught the delayed 0612...arriving my connection station to find out my original 0642 is cancelled but 0625 connection is late so I caught that one. Would be disaster! if I stuck to my plan..why the two operators late in sync?

This is the first week we feel a sense of summer and it reminds me this brilliant Pop song by "Five hundred", there is nothing quite like this. It applied very elegant literacy to describe a sense of wandering manhood in youth https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EQI8oKA6X4o

Week one in the new administration in #Taiwan, things are getting a bit concerning. We have on one side opposition parties tried to expand the legislative power

And separate China holds large scale military drills

https://mstdn.social/@davidonformosa/112494302145784580

China propaganda machine also putting pressure on Taiwanese entertainers working in China to conform

It's incredibly distracting and overwhelming situation...Taiwan gov should keep their vigilant eyes on all fronts

For this reason I have now branched out my more #political and #history and #life oriented post to @kofanchen if you are interested in what I said about #Taiwan and other non science related stuff go over there and give me a follow!
