Good morning, friends ☕ ☕ 🐕 🐕 💞 💞

Thanks to @ingalls for the reminder that May 18 is the anniversary of the Mt St Helens eruption (1980), and it's worth marking that day.

We had moved from Yakima to Wenatchee a few years earlier, so got the reports of 'darkness at noon' by phone from my grandma who was still there.

This ⬇️ is a US Forest Service photo, taken at 1:30PM on Yakima Avenue, Yakima WA, on May 18 as the ash cloud passed through.

@amyfou My grandparents were in Yakima visiting my great aunt and found out about the eruption when the priest ran into the church covered in ash and told everyone to go home. They also talked about how crazy dark it was in the middle of the day.
I've still got a jar of ash my grandpa collected in my garage somewhere.

kayakpatrick,
@kayakpatrick@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@amyfou I'm sure they are. I have no clue why my grandpa kept the stuff. He gave me the jar when I was 5 or 6 and really into collecting rocks. I keep thinning out my collection of random stuff that lives in boxes in the garage and every time I see that jar it makes me think of him and the story of the preists white vestments being covered in gray ash. I can't bring myself to get rid of it.

Hmm, second co-worker with "some kind of virus" in the last couple of weeks (neg COVID). What are all you folks spreading this week? LOL. I did joke "is it H5N1?" 🤪

@ai6yr I know 3 people who tested positive for influenza A in the past week or so 🤔

    @jonobie detergent "clean" smells drive me nuts. I've had good success soaking clothes in RLR. Sometimes, it takes one soak, sometimes multiple. At least for me it works better than washing over and over.

    For California weather watchers, that other place 🙄 has had quite a meltdown this week (rampant misinformation by "blue check" nobodies)... rumors, more rumors, angry and hurt meteorologists and scientists... more rumors.

    Statement from NWS San Diego on the brouhaha (which thankfully, hasn't made it here). #CAwx #Weather #NWSSanDiego #NWS #California #AtmosphericRiver #rumors #AR #rain #flooding

    While we can say confidence is increasing in widespread rain chances next week, we can't quite comment on how much precipitation we'll see, and exactly when it'll happen. Those details at this point in time are very uncertain. #CAwx
    Key takeaway: If there's a legit reason to worry about next week's rain, we or another core NWS partner will let you know. Please be conscious of where your weather info is coming from and ensure it is a credible and professional source. #CAwx

    @ai6yr a friend sent me this the other day and I was flabbergasted. I miss the weather info from Twitter that unfortunately hasn't made its way here but I am glad I am missing this ridiculousness.

    Inspired by a post @ai6yr responded to (I'm sorry I can't remember who originally asked how easy it was to do this or I would tag you) I finally got around to connecting my weather station to the web. I'm happy to report it was relatively painless.
    It took about 5 minutes, and the hardest part was remembering my wifi password.

    @ai6yr now I no longer have to text my partner to ask what the temp is outside when she's home and I'm not 😂

    Random vocabulary question for sailors: this article talks about "boaters" on the coast, and I believe that anyone on the ocean is considered a "sailor" even if not on a sailboat (also, that you call anything on the ocean a "ship", as long as you could fit a dinghy on it). And you only use "boater" in the context of someone in freshwater/on a river, not using a sail. Anyone want to enlighten me on the proper usage? #sailing #boating #vocabulary #marine

    @N1ZZZ @ai6yr as someone who kayaks on saltwater I would be so confused to be called a sailor.

    Disaster Preparedness lesson for the day: definitely stash extra charging cables/chargers for your devices in your disaster prep supplies (and keep them up to date; awfully short USB-C cables hers, plenty of mini-USB cables from some time ago, LOL). #DisasterPreparedness

    @ai6yr I learned this exact lesson last winter when our power was out for 24 hours. TONS of old cables, 1 USB-C 😬.

    One of the most well-known tenets of Christianity is the biblical command to "love thy neighbour." But the evangelical right's selective interpretation of this doctrine paints a troubling picture of a community more focused on self-preservation and enrichment than on broader social responsibility. (1/13) 🧵

    kayakpatrick,
    @kayakpatrick@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @Daojoan excellent and very thought provoking thread. I've definitely struggled trying to reconcile people who claim to be Christians preach hate that is so antithetical to what I learned in Sunday school and this definitely provides some insight.

    I get people are frustrated and angry at the state of the world, and vent online, but (taking lessons from the fray that was Twitter), I block early, often. (ps. do not attack the neutral messenger, even if you want to attack the message).

    kayakpatrick,
    @kayakpatrick@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ai6yr "Do not attack the neutral messenger, even if you want to attack the message" can't be said enough. So many folks here put in lots of time and effort to quickly post news and events only to get lambasted in the comments because someone can't separate the message and the messenger.
