Which of my #US #American peeps is active in campaigning for a PR voting system in the USA? And if not, what the hell are you waiting for?

@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@Longplay_Games I just wonder why all the political activism I see on social media is not focusing much stronger on changing the voting system. There’s an NGO with FairVote that people could jump on. And without a change in the voting system you can’t have real political change in the US.

If I would rank all RTD2 episodes so far, it migh look something like this:

  1. Boom
  2. Wild Blue Yonder
  3. 73 Yards
  4. Dot and Bubble
    ..Quality gap..
  5. The Giggle
  6. The Star Beast
    ..Quality gap..
  7. The Devil's Chord
  8. Space Babies
  9. The Church on Ruby Road

The first 4 are solidly good (Boom and WBY are actually great), the second 2 are mostly ok, the bottom 3 are meh-ok at best for me.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like watching Chibnall's s11 😂 (which I really enjoyed at the time)

Folks, in a weeks time the most important in your lifetime is happening. The long-standing centrist majority in the is in danger from the extreme right. And don't let yourself be fooled from people like Meloni or Le Pen distancing themselves from the AfD: their intentions are to lure the center-right towards them and build a new majority beyond the center-left, beyond the Social Democrats, Socialists, and Greens. So VOTE for a center-left or left party!!!

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

Also: VOTE!!! The more people voting means that the relative share of the extreme right will go down = the old centrist majority can hold and things like the #GreenDeal can continue. Otherwise we will see a rollback on environmental policies and a gridlock over the next 5 years. #EuropeanElections

I was just reading up on Covid again. Official death toll is about 7mn people. But I was reminded about a piece in The Economist two years ago, in which a model was shown that esimated the true number being around 3.3x as much. If that model still holds, we are talking about roughly 23mn people worldwide. At the same time, it is estimate that in the EU alone around 14mn people suffer or have suffered from some form of long Covid. This thing will haunt us for years to come.

@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

What is wild to me however is that we do not talk a lot about it anymore. I always wondered how the Spanish flu seemed to vanish in the history books so quickly. But now I understand...

Hm. I'm torn on this one.
On the one hand, it's the first of RTD's episodes I think has wholly worked as an episode... but on the other, that's because it's RTD not really writing Doctor Who - like a lot of his more successful stuff in genre, it feels more like the weirder end of British SF&F TV - your Sapphire and Steels and The Prisoners in different senses - than Dr Who. #doctorwho #73yards

@aoanla This is what puzzled me in the first place. I immediately thought of stories like The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, The Doctor's Wife, Battlefield, The Demons etc. etc. There's so much in both classic and modern Who that is way more fantasy than sci-fi, so it felt a bit odd to say "now we can do stuff we couldn't do before".

Hot tip for anyone interested in getting into (modern)

  1. Get a good VPN so that you can access the BBC iPlayer and watch for free

  2. DO NOT START WITH ROSE OR ANY EPISODES 1!!! Instead start with these episodes:

s1e6: Dalek
s2e4: Girl In The Fireplace
s3e10: Blink
s4e10: Midnight
s5e10: Vincent & the Doctor
s6e11: God Complex
2013: Day Of the Doctor
s8e4: Listen
s9e5: Girl Who Died
s10e3: Thin Ice
s11e6: Demons Of The Punjab
s11 special: Resolution

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

Why these you ask? Because they are stand-alone episodes highlighting the character of (a) their Doctor, (b) their relationship with their companions, (c) their writers and showrunners, (d) different (arche)types of DW stories.

You can then pick and choose what you prefer most and dive into that particular era.

No need to thank me :)

@aoanla Oouuh boi… s12 Villa Diotati might’ve made the cut, this is excellent. But then it ties a bit too much into the finale. And Fugitive is good but sits at a weird place with its connection the finale. The rest of s12 was mostly fine but not really good. And the less is said about s13 the better… Let’s just say I‘m not the biggest Chibnall fan in the world 😉

@lohihilo I use NordVPN and it works like a charm. They have some discounts right now, if you use a VPN regularly, this might be a good option.

There's probably one issue I have with a lot of RTD-written episodes of #DoctorWho Season One: they rarely establish a rulebook and play by it. It's all very vague and whimsical a la "and then this happened". In "The Giggle" we had some rules laid out with the Toymaker but e.g. in "The Devil's Chord" I had no idea why stuff that happened actually happened. It's a bit similar with "73 Yards", which was held together by atmosphere and Millie Gibson.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

I rather prefer episodes that set out some rules, establish a "lay of the land" as fantastical as it may be, but then stick to it and enable you to understand why something happens. Sometimes RTD manages that, or has enough going for an episode that it doesn't bother me as much, but more often than not I feel a bit lacking in understanding.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@aoanla True, RTD has his style. But here it seems amped up to eleven, it all feels a lot like wiggling your arms and see what kind of card falls out of your sleeves. I don’t mind magic in DW, but you need some kind of rules to not make it meaningless. Again, I enjoy the characters of the Doctor and Ruby, I love Boom and am intrigued by 73 Yards. I just wish it wasn’t all mystery box trick of cards.

Hey y'all. So... since I was in Junior High, my fellow nerds were always watching Doctor Who on PBS.

I never got into it but due to the fact that I traveled in D&D, chess, home computer, board games (Diplomacy, anyone?) & other nerd circles, I knew about how the Doctor was a Timelord, changed bodies every season or so & the Cybermen & Daleks & many enemies of the Doctor were legendary.

I'm in my mid-50s now & I've never seen a single episode of . So...

Where should I start? 😁

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtsh Oooh boy... I would start with some stand-alone episodes AND NOT with "Rose" or "The Eleventh Hour" or any of those Episodes 1. Start with (DW 2005):

s1e6: Dalek
s2e4: The Girl In The Fireplace
s3e10: Blink
s4e10: Midnight
s5e10: Vincent and the Doctor
s6e11: The God Complex
2013 special: The Day Of the Doctor
s8e4: Listen
s9e5: The Girl Who Died
s10e3: Thin Ice
s11e6: Demons Of The Punjab
s11 special: Resolution

That will give you a taste of every Doctor before the current one.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtsh This epsiodes are all stand-alone and not tied into a season arc (with the exception of DotD which is kind of a best of, and Resolution which brings some closure to some aspects of s11). All these episodes showcase the current Doctor and their companions and are offering a lot of flavors of DW. If you watch those you get a good overview over the different styles of different Doctors, writers and showrunners. And then you can pick an choose a season to start with.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtsh Hot tip: if you have a VPN you can access DW on BBC iPlayer!

I really enjoyed 73 Yards but I have a lot of questions with the ending.

Most of the episode ends up being a deleted alternative timeline.

This means the Dead Zone inspired interaction between Ruby and Ma' Jack never happened and he'll still be PM in the prime timeline. So it seems pointless unless it was a trickster style universe like Turn Left.

Also, what was the old Ruby saying to people to terrify them and make them abandon Ruby (orphan abandoned theme again)?

18+ jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@Rachael There‘s a ton of stuff that doesn’t make a lot of sense but I‘d say this episode used the "magic" angle the best so far. I just wonder if this entire Ruby mystery will pay off or turn into a big nothingburger. Millie Gibson impressed me, she showed quite the range. And gosh that scene with Marty was dark!
