✏️ You may have heard people say that the new popover attribute has accessibility “built in”. And you might wonder what that actually means.

Me and @scottohara wrote a post to explain what the browser does and doesn't do in terms of accessibility when you use popover

If you're not sure what popover is for, I've written this post about how popover is different https://hidde.blog/dialog-modal-popover-differences/

✏️ Ableist interactions https://hidde.blog/interactions-about-accessibility/

(wrote up a few ableist comments I saw this week, with a call to action from Vercel leadership to end their silence)

✏️ Semantics and the popover attribute: what to use when? https://hidde.blog/popover-semantics/

as the popover attribute adds behaviour, but not semantics, I've written this post to help you choose which role would be best for your specific type of popover

Scarlett Johansson says OpenAI approached her to use her voice long before it was released. She said no and they still took it. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/20/1252495087/openai-pulls-ai-voice-that-was-compared-to-scarlett-johansson-in-the-movie-her

Now, in a blog post OpenAI says: “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson” https://openai.com/index/how-the-voices-for-chatgpt-were-chosen/ But their CEO even tweeted the word “her” as a way of announcing the voice.

post truth much? this company just keeps on grabbing what isn't theirs

#CSSDay 2023 was great and I learned a lot! That all the new CSS features can't fit on one slide, selector perf does almost never matter, @mia is in fact not terrible (at all), scope is pretty much the whole point of the language, custom properties can make the visual side of components configurable like React's props but in a good way that embraces the cascade, we need voice in stylesheets…

Threads' MVP has no alternative text, but it does presumably have all the surveilllance. It's clear what their priorities are (not).

📚 “We need to be wary of technoableism: technology, development and marketing that makes it seem like disability is a big, bad thing, that needs to be downplayed or eliminated.”

“We need to make the world more hospitable to more ways of being and existance. (…) by loosening our ideas about what the right stuff and by insisting there is no wrong stuff”

from “Against technoableism” by Ashley Shew (recommended!) https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324036661

Hm, in this latest newsletter, Jakob Nielsen suggests generative AI can “replace” accessibility. this idea is wrong on various levels https://jakobnielsenphd.substack.com/p/accessibility-generative-ui

(grumpy me notes this also contains an infographic without alt; something something about getting basics right before making grander statements)

“While he doesn’t have (…) an exact definition for it, he wants to build it.”

Zuckerberg tells The Verge his company will invest in artificial “general” intelligence (which few believe is an actual possibility), while also continuing to spend >15 billion dollars on the “metaverse”. Imagine spending that sort of money on actual problems!

The European Parliamentary Elections are during CSS Day so I've just arranged to vote in Amsterdam (with Kiezerspas).

This is an important vote. Collectively we've got to cast a lot of votes on parties that are not extreme right, and (personal opinion) prioritise very ambituous climate policy over nonsensical anti migrant populism.
