Europeans are you all ready to vote next week?

It's a good opportunity to vote green and not let the populists and/or bullshitters win.

The ‘I have half a talk now’ stage of talk writing is hard. It's probably going to be okay, I tell myself, but it isn't yet. 😱

Imagine Microsoft stopped spending money on AI and start putting it into making copy/paste work in their apps.

Scarlett Johansson says OpenAI approached her to use her voice long before it was released. She said no and they still took it. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/20/1252495087/openai-pulls-ai-voice-that-was-compared-to-scarlett-johansson-in-the-movie-her

Now, in a blog post OpenAI says: “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson” https://openai.com/index/how-the-voices-for-chatgpt-were-chosen/ But their CEO even tweeted the word “her” as a way of announcing the voice.

post truth much? this company just keeps on grabbing what isn't theirs

The European Parliamentary Elections are during CSS Day so I've just arranged to vote in Amsterdam (with Kiezerspas).

This is an important vote. Collectively we've got to cast a lot of votes on parties that are not extreme right, and (personal opinion) prioritise very ambituous climate policy over nonsensical anti migrant populism.

(yes this is a subtoot of the “AI”/BeMyEyes video that they forgot to add captions to)

Would pay to be able to turn off the AI stuff in “Teams (work or school)”. It's uneccessary, wasteful and nonsensical.

🔗 Popover in Baseline!

“With Firefox 125 shipping the feature, good news on popover:
This web feature is now available in all three major browser engines, and becomes Baseline Newly Available as of April 16, 2024.”

It looks like I might be in the US while AIR are touring with Moon Safari so was checking tickets.

Turns out pop music tickets are pricey there! Same show is €47 in Amsterdam, ~£100 in London, ~$400 in LA (resale but still). Yay government-subsidised music venues.

Hit this Excel bug where it will display weekdays, except if you choose certain dates, on which it will just display a bunch of #'s. (Turns out, they only appear when the text doesn't fit)

in excel, a person changes date from tuesday 28 may to 29 of may, at which point the cell doesn't display the wednesday, but merely a series of #'s

I'm going to talk popovers in a few weeks at All Day Hey in Leeds*. Have been updating my slides and it's so great browser support is once more improving.

(*I think there might still be tickets and look at that lineup! https://heypresents.com/conferences/2024)

🔗 European elections are coming up. Are websites of political parties accessible to people with disabilities?

The fine folks at European Disability Forum and Funka Foundation looked at websites of political websites and sadly, all of them had issues.

✏️ I was locked in a room with accessibility policy people today, so I wrote a post on EN 301 549 and authoring tools.

(How could CMSes and other content tools be part of accessibility reqs in Europe and beyond?)

It's pretty wild to me that most social media don't support the fundamentel web feature of linking to another URL with link text.

Why do you think they don't?

🔗 This week, once again, someone suggested that “AI” could replace (paraphrasing) normative guidelines.

Eric Eggert explains why this seems unnecessary: “The simple fact is that we already have all the technology to make wide-spread accessibility a reality. Today.”
