It is high time I learned how to speak properly with my German family members, especially as young children will soon become a factor! I refuse to use Duolingo because of their mass firing of their translators. If you've personally found an alternative to Duolingo useful for learning German, please let me know!

Il est grand temps que j’apprenne l'allemand pour de vrai, pour pouvoir communiquer avec les membres allemands de ma famille! S'il y a une alternative à Duolingo pour l'allemand que tu aimes bien, écris-moi!

It's weird to see so many people openly talk about struggling with (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) because I've been dealing with it since I was a kid and had gotten used to having to explain it to everyone including many doctors, nurses, and paramedics (and thereafter having to tolerate most laypeople on top of medical personnel dismissing me as being over anxious hypochondriac). POTS being a "trending topic" and an actual hashtag because of long covid is a real reality shift for me.

Wikimedia has been making posts like this for the better part of 15 years. I remember attending Wiki editing parties for queers and trans people all the way back in 2010 or 2011. In 2014, I was even in a culture and technology undergrad class where the professor invited a Wikipédia editor on international women's day to coach the class and encourage women to make notable edits about women's rights and labour.

Over the years, none of my additions or changes to Wikipédia have survived. Usually because of notability issues, because women and queers have to reach stratospheric levels before they deserve even the smallest mentions on the public Wiki.

(Tangentially, I also ended up doing some small edits to some historical profiles, based on family documents (mostly correcting places of birth for a handful of ancestors) and almost all of those got reversed as well, with the erroneous information restored.)

Well over a decade later, I see posts like this and shrug. https://wikimedia.social/@wikimediafoundation/112122065590727479

Question thermodynamique/chimique: est-ce que la tendance naturelle de la matière à occuper le niveau d’énergie potentielle le plus bas possible est une fonction de la deuxième loi thermodynamique qui maintient qu'un système tend toujours vers le désordre?

Do you backup your computer once a day or once an hour?

I have limited storage space and was surprised to see my backups didn't even go back more than 12 hours on an hourly backup. I'm thinking of switching to daily.

What do you find more effective?

Note: I'm primarily a writer, but I also dabble in photography, coding, video editing, sound editing, and more rarely, small game-making. On macOS. My use-case for backups is going to do look different than many.

I refuse the term "ecological anxiety" because the anxiety presumes a hypothetical of sorts. I prefer "climate grief", "climate rage", or "climate stress," personally, and I encourage others to think about how "anxiety" can be used to minimize the feelings of people concerned about their lives changing forever.

Workers' rights are human rights. Climate change is going to be the biggest threat to the economic world order as we know it, and states are actively organizing to pre-emptively crush labour power. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/florida-considers-banning-local-heat-protections-for-workers/

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs This is actually a need I'm having a very difficult time fulfilling in my city, because laws have gotten very strict, dogs are not allowed to be offleash anywhere, except for certain dog parks (and all the ones near me are... very small, very sad little dusty, stony, squares, zero foliage, like a sad, really overfilled doggy parking lot). Leashes also must be a max of 1,5 metres ... which is very short for a lot of dogs.

    I'm getting creative and I’ve got some workarounds I can access a couple times a week when I'm lucky. But I'm admittedly also very frustrated with my city, because I’ve been having a lot of really negative experiences at various dog parks (including some dog attacks on both myself and Pippin) and it feels like the odds are really stacked against responsible dog owners who are trying to follow all the laws and rules. :blobcat_dizzy:

    In so many of the conversations about the software about the fediverse, I see endless back-and-forth about technological considerations and whether or not so-and-so design will cause Mastodon to be a footnote in the history of the internet... and so rarely do I see the same level of widespread and vigorous discussion about building healthy online community. What keeps people on social media isn't the tech, it's the people.

    If you would not appreciate receiving from a complete stranger in public:

    • screaming at you on the street
    • suddenly touching your ears and neck or waist or butt
    • sustained eye contact while whistling and gesticulating
    • someone grabbing your clothes and jerking you to the side

    Then PLEASE do not do this to a dog!!! Even extremely friendly dogs can find this behaviour really scary!!!

    Can any #tea people explain the difference between:

    English Breakfast
    Scottish Breakfast
    Irish Breakfast

    @tea

    gersande,
    @gersande@silvan.cloud avatar

    @aburtch
    Not an expert in black teas (I love green teas from Japan and Taiwan primarily!) but based on my own experience:

    English Breakfast is considered the basic “Breakfast" tea experience — a robust blend meant to pair nicely with milk and sugar. (Fun fact, this name is probably something American tea vendors in New York coined in 18th century, in England it would just have been called tea!)

    In my experience, the blends called Irish Breakfast are very robust and red in colour, and made to be served with honey and with/without milk, tea-wise they often have more of an Assam presence compared to EB. However, there is no standard taste or flavour profile associated with Irish breakfast, so it's possible to find Irish Breakfasts that are actually quite mild.

    Scottish Breakfast is in my experience also very robust but less towards the sweet side, more towards a "smoky" side, often meant to pair well with very salty food, with notes of oak barrels and malt.

    What on earth is going on with Boeing? I feel like it's been years of one disaster after another!!!

    "Profit Over Safety: Boeing Supplier Ignored Safety Warnings Before Door Blowout, The Lever Reports”

    > Less than a month before a door plug on a Boeing aircraft blew off midflight, employees at Spirit AeroSystems, a subcontractor for Boeing, had tried to warn corporate officials about serious safety problems with parts for 737 MAX jets. But those warnings went unheeded, and the employees were told to falsify records, according to a new investigation by The Lever on a federal complaint filed by workers at Spirit. "In some cases, workers were retaliated against for trying to raise those alarms," says journalist David Sirota. "These workers in this federal complaint are alleging essentially a culture of defects, a culture of fraud, a culture of retaliation."
