It always makes me smile when I can spot Tulip, the median carpenter ant before I go off to work. She wasn’t up to anything remarkable today. Just ant stuff.

Tulip rests on a rock back legs elevated thorax low in the white sand.
Tulip in comparison to three of her sisters: one is much larger than her, one smaller.
Tulip is groomed by a sister.

@futurebird there needs to be a paperboard book about the adventures of tulip. it should have stylized but meticulously well observed ant renditions

found a more recent edition (2018) of the Alex Ries illustrated Sink your Teeth into Dinosaurs kids book at the flea market :D
interestingly the two non-dinosaurs (kronosaurus and pteranodon) have been replaced with dinosaurs this time around. i wonder if that was intentional

A 2008 piece depicting Corosaurus. The only purpose for this was playing around in Photoshop and learning how to create painting and photo composite art.

@BobNicholls in your opinion are there no-nos when it comes to doing digital art of this kind? things that are tempting to the novice but are best avoided

i've been trying to come up w a non humanoid klingon design. i know i want to give them a ramming sperm whale inspired head, but so far i'm unsure on what to do for the body. i keep (poorly) copying Alex Ries' (excellent) alternative design

on the way home i passed an apartment building that had a trash bag filled with lots of books. many were falling apart, but some were in good condition. i tried to dig around but in the end i only took 2. one about the rescue of a rescue dog and the other a copy of 3001: the final odyssey

on my way home i got to see several of the juvenile squirrels again. they are pigeon like in their fearlessness, wich is not common here. i also saw one the hens again. just one chick this time. one the rooster's lost all it's tail feathers but seemed to be alright. i wonder if it was a failed predation attempt

what he said: I am suggesting that a laminar pallium may be more expansible to a human level without a significant loss of processing power than is a nuclear pallium

spoiler free review

After watching the first three episodes, i can safely say that CT is right up there with Camp Cretaceous as some of the best JP content since the original movies.

The way they dive into the dumpster fire of a world made by the movies and correct their mistakes is brilliant and i cant wait for more.

Id rate it 8/10

@llewelly did you read the paper btw?

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@llewelly ah no problem. i was just wondering if by the paper's logic the group of dinosaurs best positioned to evolve human intelligence (however unlikely it still was) would be ceratopsians. they already have a kind of neck that is ideal to carry large heads and the paper says that a nuclear pallium brain would have to be much bigger than a laminar one to match a human's

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@llewelly perhaps if display court building (like a bowerbird's) appeared in the lineage it could be exapted into the beginning of agriculture later. suppose the males defend the same court each year and maybe even mark it with droppings that could fertilize the "treasures". the treasures could include seeds or parts of plants. then next year the female liked the display that included growing plants that took root. maybe even topiary like practices could emerge lel

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@llewelly i don't know how plausible it is
