Hail Freya, it's Friday! #FridayPaganPoll

Most pagans celebrate the cycle of the seasons. The thing about circles is that they don't really have an end/beginning, so everyone has their own idea on when a new cycle begins for them.

What day do you consider the seasonal ‘New Year’ in your practice?

#Pagan #Witch #Polytheism

fey,

@Cat_LeFey Haust Blót/Mabon/autumn equinox for me. It's not as major an observance as the next couple spokes on the Wheel, but strictly in terms of ritual timekeeping that's where the new year starts — in the twilight moment just before night overtakes day.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey yeah, it's a little funky insofar as I do still treat Calan Gaeaf/Samhain as a harvest holiday too — but I am not surprised for instance that the pagan English called October "Winterfylleth." I also largely don't incorporate Judaism into my rites but with some proximity to it through friends & recent ancestors I ~get why Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur have their lunar reckoning anchored by the equinox.

This #FullMoonArt project took me the full four weeks, cuz I wanted a big, oversized cardigan. I softened it up with a few washes and now I have the perfect cozy winter sweater. I guess this is my own pattern, I was just winging it based on some other sweater patterns I’ve done, and I designed the moon motif myself.

#FiberArt #Knitting

fey,

@Cat_LeFey this is so awesome! Can I ask some of your favorite cardigan patterns that you've worked from before? I'm not yet ready for sweaters, I'm still at the scarfs & hats stage, but I love the ribbing choice here for the neckline/opening.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey ah, thx for breaking this down! I know raglan sleeves as a shirt style, didn't realize that was also a knitting method. I only knew about the second method you've described.

I will have to think about which way I'd like to try first. I actually like weaving in ends, but raglan style calls out to me now because I've worried that making flat pieces creates a higher likelihood of needing to do some blocking, especially if using stockinette. I've only needed to block one item so far & I like not having that additional work. On the other hand I don't like stockinette that much anyway so although it's so classic I might be a weirdo who tries a sweater without it...

fey,

@Cat_LeFey oh, also raglan sleeves on shirts look really good on me, so for a jersey sweater that would be a very obvious choice if I'm going to wear the thing myself

fey,

@Cat_LeFey I can indeed increase & decrease for hats, so!

It is literally impossible to be an expert in everything relating to and/or . The umbrella is too broad. So after the initiate stage, we tend to settle into a few niches.

I think this is a great humbling and equalizing factor within the community. We are all novices at something, and it's possible to find experts in all kinds of specific fields of study.

Here's my :

Expert- regional plant life, tarot
Intermediate- astrology
Novice- Greek pantheon and mythology

What are yours?

fey,

@Cat_LeFey thx haha, definitely a witch of several trades regardless of mastery :blobcatpeek:

& yeah, astrology is so unbelievably interesting & personalizable, but there are some things that I don't think it's that good for & the birth chart stuff is mostly where I spend any energy. With that, I would like to get better at working with aspects (conjunctions, trines, &c.) because that's still a little more complicated than what I usually bother to analyze.

Some of the best pagan/secular parenting advice I have received is “teach your kids about Jesus, or someone else gladly will.”

I taught my pagan children that Jesus is ‘the god of forgiveness and charity in the Christian pantheon.’ It's not perfectly accurate, but it framed it in a way that they understood.

#Pagan #Polytheism

fey,

@Cat_LeFey @siin I'm definitely going to have to figure this stuff out if/when I'm able to have a kid. They will have almost entirely Mormon family on their dad's side. It will be an interesting challenge.

I myself was raised by atheist/secular parents & still given an illustrated Bible to learn all the stories in there so that I understood what other people would be talking about. (Likewise a book explaining Jewish holidays, because we had so many Jewish friends & maybe because, as I eventually found out in adulthood, of Jewish ancestors.) I definitely appreciate what my parents did & I agree that some of the Abrahamic myths have good story in them. Not enough for me to have stuck with the Catholicism I actually converted to at age 18, but I still like some of the Jesus stories, the books of Genesis & Exodus, & others.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey yeah, & there's a gorgeous history of Christianity being syncretized into animist practices worldwide. It doesn't have to be a destructive, colonial religion if you have the right angle on it. I'm even ideologically opposed to what I term "hegemonic Christianity," which is one reason I describe my practice as satanic, & yet I still don't hate Christians themselves. I hate what a disproportionate number of them (or disproportionately effective number) do to the people they regard as inferior.

There is only one true God and they are Entropy and Decay :dancing_mushroom: :mario_mushroom: :moomin_mushroom:
#MushroomsOfMastodon

> Think long and hard before buying oyster #mushroom blocks to grow in your house. They are a very aggressive #fungi and not at all picky on what types of wood they will consume. If you have any moisture problems they will begin to eat your house. I see these posts constantly in my mushroom ID groups. I started collecting pictures to show people so they could see the dangers themselves. I have not noticed any warning labels of any kind on the packaging, so buyer beware. If you have your heart set on growing mushrooms in your kitchen then I recommend that you pick any kind besides oysters. Lion's mane, maitake, chestnuts or literally anything else beside oysters...unless you rent and don't like your landlord 😆

fey,

@Crazypedia boosted because it's a great warning about the mushrooms, but I will add that entropy & decay don't have to be the same thing! Decay is regenerative, a way to actually make use of entropy & reverse it. It's only imperial human systems that insist on taking those balanced, cyclical feedback loops & breaking them to have all the energy flow in one entropic direction... such as trying to grow mushrooms in your modern house instead of going out into the woods to find the edible ones that are already there!

TheWildHuntNews, to Magic

At the end of it, I know that the projects I do take on – be they jars of herbs or small rituals, necklaces made of certain stones or clothes woven just so – are few and far between. If I light a candle and say a few words, they are more likely to be a prayer than an incantation. Surely that’s not Witchcraft.

fey,

@TheWildHuntNews what an absolutely fantastic piece. I resonate with it greatly as someone who does identify as being a witch but seems to interpret "magic" much less literally/supernaturally than I see a lot of people describe their magic. I very rarely perform anything that could be understood as a "spell" & although intensely interested in herbalism I treat claims from random online tincture sellers with extreme skepticism. I practice divination but I can't say it's "predicting the future" because that's not correct.

Of course these are also reasons why I feel at a distance from some other ritualists who don't describe themselves as witches, too, but never mind that — again, this post is really good.

Many US pagans want to visit Stonehenge or other international pagan monuments, but I'm willing to bet that each state has at least one sacred site that is equivalent- a place where people gather for spiritual experiences, then and now. Whether natural or man-made, they inspire awe, and have the feeling of a space out-of-time.

I want to hear about your local sacred site! No parameters, I just wanna hear about special places around the US. It would be cool to collect one from every state.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey my main awareness of local sacred sites is for the state where I grew up — New Hampshire. There are several sacred locations there for the Abenaki people. Agiochook (colonially named Mount Washington) is the most prominent mountain peak east of the Mississippi & its indigenous name refers to it as the dwelling of the Great Spirit.

There was also the Stone Face (colonially the Old Man in the Mountain). The Abenaki story about it is beautiful — a man waiting for his dead beloved. Although the rock formation collapsed in my lifetime, the story stayed alive as the collapse meant the man was reunited with his love.

I would like to know more about sacred sites in my area of Massachusetts, but I don’t yet. The best I’m aware of is Mount Wachusett, but I don’t know if it’s considered a sacred site exactly — I’ve had it explained to me as an important meeting place for the Abenaki & Nipmuc peoples whose lands meet around that latitude.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey it's very nice. Also apparently it's a story of cross-tribal relations too because the man is Abenaki but his wife who dies is Haudenosaunee.

Looks like after a couple tiny snowfalls in November & December that barely accumulated or melted in a day, conditions on Sunday will finally be as they should be for January: moderately snowy. We're expecting 3-6".

I slightly dread the potential loss of power since our neighborhood is so prone to those — too many branches hanging over lines, I think — but maybe with just that much accumulation it will be just a really nice snow. & we have new tires on the sedan & just upgraded our battery-powered snowblower to a heavy duty version that can handle our steep driveway, so snow is about to get less frustrating. I'm happy for winter to be winter.

fey,

@Crazypedia my new year is the fall equinox but I still really enjoy this date as a stubborn hedonistic holdover from pre-Christian times. It should be a holiday for celebrating pagan/animist resilience imo. :aCauldron:

Good Jol to you!! ❄️ :candle_pixel: :invertedpentagram: :star_tarot_card: :tarot_cup: 🎄 The wreath is made & so are the pomanders. Bonus tree (unfortunately artificial) included.

I acknowledge this holiday as a time of darkness’ height — a time of maximum mystery & ecstatic indulgence — more than as “the return of the light,” which I observe at the start of February.

Praise darkness & creation unfinished!

A dark green holiday tree hung with blue, white, & silvery baubles, as well as some ornaments like a metallic red Welsh dragon & a white antler striped in gold.
A green wreath, slightly oblong, made of cedar, red pine, scotch pine, red ribbon, & little jackalope decorations. It hangs on a white door.

My husband got me this cinnamon broom, which was on sale because it doesn't smell anymore, but I like how witchy it looks. He noticed that I've been trying out some broom magick this winter.
Do people collect brooms? I might be starting a broom collection. 🧹

#Witch #Broom

fey,

@Cat_LeFey we have an old cinnamon broom on display in our home. I don't think I'm a collector yet, especially because I don't have an intentional use for brooms in my practice, but I did learn last year about how to make hand-brooms & I have my first one hanging up too. I'd like to make more eventually.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey yes, I certainly feel like doing more with brooms is a thing I ought to do — informed by popular imagination more than actual fact, I suppose, but the imagining is so potent that I think it now often requires us witches to engage with some formal relation to brooms even if the kind of relation we settle on is "no relation."

Very clear view last night considering the neighborhood holiday lights & just not living in as dark an area as I’d like.

Today began very grey & gloomy with the rain, but while the Sun hasn't yet re-emerged, I can feel such changes happening to me from yesterday's good (still secret) news that I just started improvising a song out of nowhere while putting laundry away. Just singing about life & myself & things that are beautiful.

New newsletter post! :boost_requested: :reply_love:

"Last Quarter: On violence"

It's Friday. Hello. I'm writing in the middle of waiting for results for an important medical test. Important and nerve-rattling, for reasons I won't go into unless there's something that merits explaining to other people. In all likelihood there won't be something like that, but it's that fraction of a chance that sends me gratefully into the flow of words — knowing that whatever happens, I will have distracted myself from fear and completed one more work that I would rather not wait until it's too late to perform.

Fitting, perhaps, that after thinking about one particular topic for most of my life and planning to write a piece in this vein for the better part of ten years, I had determined that this week I would finally write my central thoughts on violence. I say central in that they are not my first and will not be my last, but they govern all other thoughts that pass through their nexus.

These thought on violence begin with the awareness that I am living in an extraordinarily, catastrophically violent time, and I have witnessed violence and been subject to it in ways to which I did not and would never consent. I have seen and experienced far less of such violence than some people do, but enough to feel rage, despair, and sickness at my own memories and at what I know is being enacted on others. That is, I suspect, the average encounter with violence that most humans would statistically know. Outside that range, the balance is of course tipped far more toward experiencing a lot of violence, rather than none. And the very world we inhabit is being destroyed in a violent fashion, on every conceivable level that violent destruction can occur. Perhaps even in ways we do not yet conceive.

To examine such injustices systemically inflicted on both human and non-human bodies and spheres, in a pragmatic evaluation I can easily call that violence unnecessary, and as a rare moral absolute I will call it evil. The name I prefer to use for this sort of violence is in fact violation, and all violations are interrelated through their reliance upon and roots within an extractive, entropic paradigm: the imperially centered, individual "self" uses and disposes of "everyone/everything else."

The trouble with portraying violence in these terms, however, is that as honest and accurate as they are, from them it does not follow that all violence is violation. Modern political movements of all flavors are familiar with this distinction, no matter where they might draw the line; and I also do not think I'm setting out to argue anything that a good deal of humans haven't already known and carried in our very blood since before the first so-called civilizations. But to properly make salt for the eclipse, I do believe there will be some necessary violence, and it is time for me to address what that is.

In order to reach my conclusion, I must step — as a leftist — through several problems that the left wrestles with, or does not wrestle with enough. This will be one of the newsletter's longer reads, but also among the most significant since I began it.

All manner of violence, including sexual violence, is discussed here continuously.

It's that time when I start looking at my daily #tarot pulls to get a review of the year. Statistically, I pull each card around 4 or 5 times, so I pay attention to the ones that appear more or less frequently.

This year I've pulled the 6 of Pentacles the most, ten times so far, so I'm naming it the card of the year. I remember in 2016 when I pulled The Tower 18 times, but I've literally not seen it for two years in a row now.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey 2016 feels absolutely like the year to pull the Tower 18 times.

fey,

@Cat_LeFey as far as I'm concerned, that year was the Tower Time, & we still aren't out of it.
