There's some kind of saw chord synth thing I'm trying to recreate. It comes from LMFAO's Party Rock, Giga's Bring it on, and probably quite a few dubstep songs. Try as I may, I simply cannot figure out how to do it. I'm attaching a sample of the saw chord from Bring it on to this post. If anyone can tell me how to make this sound, I'd appreciate it.

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@VectorP @dangero what have you tried?

I hear the supersaw, there's some unison going on, a really tight envelope and/or some kind of gating/ducking effect. Someone else mentioned noise and yeah seems like there's some noise in it, or it's run through a saturator/distortion effect, or both. Could definitely be a wavetable of a supersaw being modulated, or possibly pulse width modulated saw like the classic Hoover synth (yes, you can modulate the width of a saw wave!).

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@VectorP @dangero could also be some chorusing or other FX. With modern sound design the FX are nearly always a big part of the sound, so you have to take them into account.

We (myself and @liquid_clear) don't claim to be making the best music in the world, we definitely don;t claim to be making the most accessible music in the world but we do make music which expresses ideas and concepts in novel and sometimes strange ways.

If you listen, thank you.

@OneBlindMouse @liquid_clear I remember quite enjoying the previous Frind release. Interested in having me listen and write it up for my OPM blog?

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@RickiTarr it's a fantastically stupid and, frankly, not very good movie (also more than a bit problematic 😅) but Grandma's Boy fucking kills me every time.

Of course, it is a dumb stoner comedy and I only watch it when I'm ludicrously high, so...

I'm now listening to my latest work, "Chiaroscuro."

My first impression is, "did I really write all this? HOW?!"

It's clearly a case of possession.

@Eidon honestly love that feeling

Stoned on Sunday? How about some weird-ass music to accompany your altered state? Here's my discography:

https://etherdiver.bandcamp.com/music

Go with Metaphysical Shitposting if you like to float on waves of noisy ambient drone spiked with occasional freakout ; stick with Psychedelic Ghost Stories if you prefer a little more structure to your wizard anthems and weed accompaniment.

One of the things I love is when a noob starts watching Trek shows for the first time, and they're like, This is so silly, it's ridiculous, that guy turned into a lizard and impregnated his captain, that lady got possessed by a sex ghost that belonged to her grandma, the captain is sorting a room full of floofy guinea pigs, the ship runs on mushrooms, this theme song makes no sense, and I'm just like Yeah, isn't it great?! You either get it or you don't, I don't know what to tell you.

@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@RickiTarr @astroPug @angiebaby @pseudonym @Kierkegaanks I love that movie so much I've seriously considered writing a book on it

I am amazed that I somehow never realized that the Midnight Special, a TV music show that ran from the early '70s thru the late '80s, existed until like... six months ago? Less than that? (Honestly, nothing's ever made me more inclined to believe in the Mandela effect than this 😅 , considering I was a professional music journalist for most of a decade and a lifelong music fanatic).

Anyway, I've been catching up on it via YouTube, where they're slowly archiving all of the episodes.

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

It's an interesting show... a pretty nice variety of musical acts, mostly mainstream but some pretty unusual, underground guests from time to time (the one I am running in the background right now has Jobriath as a guest!).

A lot of the performances are pretty mid, but there's an occasional barnstormer on there. I caught up on all the Steely Dan appearances for example, and it made me profoundly sad I never took an opportunity to see them play before Walter Becker died.

etherdiver, (edited )
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

But one thing that is profoundly lame about it is how much the audiences fucking SUCKED. Almost without exception the audiences are completely checked out-- just sitting there, looking bored -- no matter what's happening on stage or who's playing. It's like they fed them all quaaludes before the shoot 😂

Must have been hell to go out there and play to such a bunch of dead fish.

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

Still, an interesting historical archive if nothing else, and if there's a musical act you particularly loved that existed between 1972 and 1981, it's worth visiting their YouTube archive and seeing if there's a performance or two in there you might not have seen. There' are some pretty sweet ones (and plenty that are... less sweet).

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

Oh, and here's a link to the YouTube account for the archive. Looks like they upload an episode a week, in order, plus there's a bunch of excerpted performances in standalone clips.

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

Oh, one last thing! I didn't mention it but it probably bears specifying: these are all live, in-studio performances. No lip synching, which is the typical thing on TV music shows. Some of the acts seem to use backing tracks (or at the very least, their backing band is ensconced offstage) , but they're actually singing at the very least

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

Another last thing! If you are a fan (or hater) of the show, either from its original run, your mom's VHS tapes of it, or the YouTube channel, feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the show in general, favorite performances etc.

If you were ever in that audience, I REALLY want to hear from you...

Finally, if you're one of the artists covered in one of these, I highly encourage you to check out the other artists I've covered (in your week, or in previous/future weeks!) and share your thoughts about their work as well. I'm trying to build a community here, and the way we do it is by engaging with and supporting each other. So let's do that!

So, in the effort to move from Spotify...

I need a good, artist friendly place to buy music; track level and album both. Ideally we'd be looking at lossless quality but artist friendly is more important.

I know of Bandcamp for some stuff. I prefer not to use Amazon if I can help it.

@etherdiver you're like, the music master. Any insight?

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@tieflingdiotima For stuff that's not on Bandcamp? Or?

I still buy CDs and rip the files for older stuff I can't find on Bandcamp. Heck, if you're willing to dig thru piles of stuff to find treasure, pawn shops, thrift stores and similar places usually have a ton of stuff for like $2 or less per disc...

For new(er) stuff that isn't on Bandcamp it can be tricky, but that's usually mainstream stuff and I don't fuck with too much of that...

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@arod @tieflingdiotima @mirlo oh for sure, Mirlo and jam.coop are small but cool alternatives both of whom have a home here in Fedi.

I need about 65 new followers to hit 2k, and I'd love to get there before my next release! To that end, I'd love it if anyone who finds my feed to be particularly interesting, useful or entertaining to tell a friend, give me a shoutout on your TL or whatever else you might think of that could help spread the word.

And who might want to follow? Musicians who want to get more ears on their music; music fans looking for new stuff to love; anyone who likes weirdos.

I do follow back, too!

@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@pgcd oh shit, can we ask for that?!? I need that too 😅

@floby @limneticvillains I mean, I wake up EVERY DAY hoping to read the headline that he choked on a hamberder the night before, but so far no luck...
