TIL There was an episode of “Gilligan’s Island” about doing Hamlet as a musical. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKMOClN9ITg

@Dashdrum So did I, but I have zero memory of this episode!

I also watched entirely too much F-Troop. Anything was better than doing my homework.

Forget about your first programming language for a minute... What was the first platform on which you played Zork? https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/11/infocoms-ingenious-code-porting-tools-for-zork-and-other-games-have-been-found/

@mlevison Well, one evolved from the other.

I played Adventure on a DEC PDP, I think.

The UK government recently changed the law to ban company names containing computer code, after Michael Tandy of Hatfield registered a company called “; DROP TABLE “COMPANIES”; — LTD,” which could theoretically erase the companies house database. https://www.parallelparliament.co.uk/mp/alison-thewliss/bill/2022-23/economiccrimeandcorporatetransparency#9369E91A-2B4D-445F-A66B-1A5071727932

@drahardja To be fair, that would be a great company name.

@grammargirl Oh, Siri can do more cool and useful things. When it first came out I reviewed Talking to Siri: Learning the Language of Apple's Intelligent Assistant, and one thing I learned how to do is say, "Siri, when I get home remind me to put out the trash [or Call Brad]." It knows what spot you have marked as Home, for instance, so it pops up with a reminder or suggests the phone call.

I don't use that feature often, but golly it's handy when I do.

I'm living in Arizona, a state which does NOT observe Daylight Saving Time, and we're not dying. I know, sounds crazy.

@thomasfuchs One of the best things about living here.

Until you work with people in other places and your Zoom schedule gets truly confused.

TIL In the early days of the U.S. space program, NASA didn't offer astronauts life insurance for in-flight missions, and private life insurance was extremely expensive. To get around this, the crew of the Apollo 11 mission signed hundreds of autographs for their families to sell if they died. If the mission went wrong, NASA planned to cut communication with the astronauts and let them either suffocate or take their own lives. https://bigthink.com/the-past/apollo-11-plan-b/

Do you ever deal with an edit that won't leave you alone?

I have a sentence like this:

The company that invented the device was located in the same building as ...

I took out the word "located." It shouldn't be necessary. "In" means the same thing. But now it doesn't feel right to me, and I keep thinking about it.

[Update: I changed it to "worked out of," and now I'm happy with it.]

@grammargirl

I do like the "located in" or "worked out of" in the sentence. Not grammatically per se but puts reader's attention on place more directly.

I just got around to this post by @Jbat which is is a must read:

https://battellemedia.com/archives/2023/07/digital-is-killing-serendipity

What worries me is the longer term impact. When serendipity is lost at the college level, what does it do to the society we're building in the future?

@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

Does anyone know of a tool to monitor #redis pub/sub topics? e.g., messages per second on topics, average message size in bytes, etc.

I know the INFO command gives total stats for all commands, but it'd be nice to have more detail into pub/sub. I'm sure we used to have this at pusher.com, but not sure how, and that was over a decade ago, before they moved to an in-house developed messaging infrastructure
