I don't normally post personal updates, but I'll make an exception in this case...

If anyone wants to help out by getting something off of our baby registry, I'm sure our soon-to-be daughter will appreciate it. My wife and I will. 🙂

@Crell Congrats! I often come across your efforts on PHP repos so have just donated via GH sponsors to give back a little.

Had my eye on Futo for a while and today saw they created their own open source definition, so I wrote up a post to plead against this:

@peppercorn I shared this with them in their zulip chat earlier today, just awaiting an official response now

New open source confusion case added for Dokploy, who advertise as open source under a modified Apache license with strong added terms that remove freedoms.

They closed and locked my query about this with no official response.

If you need a PaaS/Vercel alternative, maybe instead look to something like Coolify by @andrasbacsai

Just dropping a few links for all the self-hosters looking for something to do this weekend...

danb,

@shollyethan Just a note on the app directory, I noticed the licenses are off for Sentry and Outline. Outline is BUSL, Sentry is FSL, and they only become Apache (and open source) after a few years (for older versions). Plus Lubelogger isn't really MIT as mentioned yesterday.

Just dropped a new episode of The Self-Host Cast featuring a casual conversation with Ivan, the developer of the #vehicle maintenance tracking application #LubeLogger.

Would love some feedback on ways to improve or suggestions for future episode topics!

@shollyethan Another good episode! After a quick scan over LubeLogger I did notice the project has a pet peeve of mine of advertising as open source while not being licensed under (widely considered) open source terms.

I've queried this with the project:

@andrasbacsai But how are you gonna impress those VC funders if you don't have at least 50 microservices deployed in complicated K8s clusters, while depending on 4 of your tech bro's SASS services to help justify the existence of their product?

@brianb I currently use a modified version of webidx for https://www.bookstackapp.com/ (search only shows on desktop) since I wanted something super simple to maintain. Seemed to work well and, since it was so simple, it was easy to tweak to my needs.

I changed the compression to happen via browser gz/brotli compression though instead of using an additional library for that.

Thinking about setting up a Discourse (forum) instance for writefreesoftware.org, where you can ask questions about using and reusing free software, free software licenses, and so on. Would this be a useful resource for you?

danb,
@danb@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault I'd be interested in helping/moderating. I currently help moderate the opensource reddit sub. Looked to set up an open maintainer-focused alternative last year but stopped as I didn't have the audience/connections/social-skills to start such a community from scratch.

Pushed an update to one of my Android apps for the first time in over a decade 😅

Feels good to keep one of my earliest coding projects alive, and I made it open source while I was there:

WG Easy is an absolute killer #OpenSource, #Selfhosted Server GUI for @WireGuardVPN. It runs on #Linux and #Docker of course, and connect up your #Windows, #MacOS, #Android, #Linux, and #iOS devices with ease! https://youtu.be/BRLB4wRL4cM

danb,
@danb@fosstodon.org avatar

@MickInTx I've heard some good things about wg-easy, so looking forward to watching this to understand it better, although it's another one that's technically not generally considered open source due to limitations of use.

Found a non-open "BookStack competitor" (Helpjuice) being promoted in a sketchy manner on /r/selfhosted.

Comments on a month-old post, with positive replies from two other accounts (which only have similar positive responses themselves)

@shollyethan yeah, I don't expect mods to be too hot on old threads, and this stuff happens all the time on Reddit.

I did report this shady scheme to HelpJuice via email but for some reason they're yet to respond 🤔

So Midori web browser still exists (good), but now is based on Gecko web engine instead of Webkit. 🫤️

danb,
@danb@fosstodon.org avatar

@jasaldivara it was bought by (or given to) some company which has been jumping around using different forks as bases since. Think they used some electron/chrome base before.

The same people also copied products for a open source search project, passing it as their own without providing attribution, until called out in which case they lied about a level of partnership.

Some context for that in this thread:

@chebra @MickInTx plus, in my view, they misrepresent the AGPLv3 https://github.com/ssddanbrown/Open-Source-Confusion-Cases/blob/main/cases/cal-com.md

I found that with their code too but didn't know if I was building it wrong or something, although it was a while ago when I tried.

I found this atomic shrimp video quite thought provoking in regard to "AI" art and it's equivalence to a human seeing & being influenced by existing art:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC1jfLt2VDg

An "AI" can remember & replicate very well. It is not making the same considerations as a human, it's not judging the line between plagiarism and inspiration. Sure the human feeding prompts may take on part of that, but that's a massive layer of abstraction.

The "2024 State of Open Source Report" has recently been published, conducted by OpenLogic by Perforce in collaboration with the OSI and the Eclipse Foundation.

Unfortunately access is behind a form, with quite sketchy privacy concerns. I called them out on it (and they responded) here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/opensource/comments/1agg086/comment/kogrd2t/

They also used DALL-E to generate the cover image 🤦

Thanks @gbxyz for webidx. I liked the simplicity & low-surface area, so am now trialling it after spending some time hacking it into https://bookstackapp.com (Search only shows on desktop).

My database is 900kb but I pre-compress it with brotli (decompression browser-handled) so it serves as 274kb. Seems to work well so far!

Added a couple more cases to my open source confusion project:

  • APITable - Misrepresenting the AGPLv3 to encourage use of their enterprise license.
  • Nango - Advertising as open source under the Elastic v2 license.

Also added Metabase as an addressed case & positive example of them clearing up their potential AGPL confusion.

@mpldr Ah, I rember the Rossman grayjay video where his misrepresented it as open source, but the actual project didn't seem to do the same.

If you have public examples of current misleading uses of open source, or public communications about this with them, feel free to raise on the project's issue list.
