Recently we organised the New Years Day Global Stream Parade for fedi and alternative broadcasters and streamers.

It's a bit of pickle being holidays and weekend, both super quiet times for fedi, but also a great time to do something for folks to be alone together or any variant of together. We can't do anything that big again ourself but we have some ideas on how to help facilitate more bursts of the awesome community vibe that was felt on the day.

Rest of the year = oof a blur. We showed again (always the bridesmaid, placed in 2022) in the Fedivision contest.

It's 2024 and the only way to have a linux desktop audibly ping you for notifications in an #xmpp client is to checks notes compile your own specially flagged debian flavour of one of the 4 or 5 potential clients?

nothing against gajim, works well but no audio even with a bunch of packages added, love dino it works solid as and stays out of the way but no audio notification

Any solutions to not have to flatpak effectively an extra environment or compile versions that'll munt things? #askFedi

Dear internet,

Need suggestions for a new desktop OS for laptop.

I lived on Ubuntu for a couple of years around 2011. I've been mainlining MacOS for almost a decade now - but I'm fed up with their bullshit.

Some of my requirements:

  • Realtime processing kernel (audio latency)
  • Ease of use: I don't want to have to compile an OS
  • Window Manager & UI Customization
  • Comprehensible AND comprehensive audio routing UI
  • Decent package manager

@frigginglorious @philippe confirmed. Ran ubu studio or studio bolt on for some years. Went mint a few years back for dj and daw rig and it mostly just stays out the way which is nIce. hackable if needed, mainstream and tidy enough to usually not be ruiner of worlds if you want to update.

Cant speak to depth of hardware but previous gen scarletts have been zero hassle.

You can upload audio files on Mastodon. The upload works just like attaching images or videos, but you select a sound file instead. You can also attach artwork by clicking Edit and then Choose Image.

There is no time limit on audio, but it has to be within the file size limit on your server (usually 40MB).

Supported formats are MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, OPUS (rename it to end in .ogg), AAC, M4A or 3GP.

micro blogging, esp masto is a bad place for big media, you are forcing any server with anyone following you to get, store and serve the media. This is already a huge burden and cost esp in the mastodon backend and esp for small and medium servers and volunteers

Between ephemera, federation issues of interoperability, versioning, glitches and admin wars is not ideal for availabilty and visibilty

Best put it somewhere actually made for storage and/or media

    On agency, independent alternative artist reach and voice and a new old classic.

    We were excited to have quite the pent up hiatus breaking pile of remixes (some already out), sample and sound collections, EPs, ALBUMS and a covers project done, approaching done, or well in the build pipeline.

    The timeline for indy artists wanting to avoid walled gardens, coupled with the bandcamp incidents, recent and still inflamed fedi admin wars might leave us wondering how or if we should even share.

    Many of us are "bad at", uncomfortable, unwilling to, or some combo therein of posting infinitely about our art.

    The Fedi can be super ephemeral at servers level, certainly can be a bit buried at the feed level. And if you go too hard, muted or blocked.

    With the implosion of bandcamp souring many parties, we will lose announcement and reach there as well.

    What can we do as collaborators, supporters, listeners, instigators and friends to go out of our way a smidge to help each other out in this landscape? This may mean things like a bit of discovery or collation time, or holding nose using payment gateways.

    What tools can we embrace to balance and offer some "more durable" connections toward organic reach, support and solidarity for musos trying to walk as ethical a path as they can and also share the work they create and/or ya know, eat?

    How to do this if trying to walk as ethical a path as we can with as much of a focus on not just the agency of and non-exploitative use of our work by bad actors, but also the agency and data sovereignty health of our friends and supporters in age of surveillance capitalism?

    It is a nice thing to share the work we create and/or you know, eat?

    Getting a balance has been made so hard by design. We may need to both gently shed and rip some plasters off these old wounds.
