It is probably just my Xennial age group but one of the worst things about all this media upheaval is that the industry successfully killed the idea of fair use and home recording. Sure, pirate copies are around, but it’s not ubiquitous like mom and dad’s VHS collection was. Incredible shows could disappear from public conscience not just because studios pull them, but because recording your own library became difficult if not verboten. Advocates of Fediblocking #Barcelona need to learn lessons from the #TwitterMigration when talk of Fediblock was also en vogue.

To review:

  1. Despite hosting Twitter employees, a mass Fediblock on macaw.social didn’t happen

  2. Despite being run by a for-profit corporation, a mass Fediblock on vivaldi.social didn’t happen

  3. Despite being run by cryptobros, a mass Fediblock on mastodon.cloud and mstdn.jp didn’t happen

  4. Despite being run by a walled garden and hosting two Twitter co-founders, a mass Fediblock on me.dm didn’t happen

  5. Despite being funded by VCs (including Marc Bernioff), a mass Fediblock on moth.social didn’t happen

So why do you all think the Fediverse will come together to block #Meta?

And until mastodon.social and mastodon.online announce that Barcelona is Fediblocked, any notion of it happening is wishful thinking.

So Barcelona is coming. We need to brace for impact. And we need to be strategic in our response.

Weird. It’s almost like this was the point of ending free API access at Twitter. Maybe journalists should switch to a platform that is purposely open and encourage their readers to do the same… if what the journalists value is accurate and trustworthy dissemination of information and the ability to verify it as such. #Twitter #API #Misinformation #Bot #fediverse #activityPub

Seems to me, Tina Turner was one of the first big name female artists (and please correct me if I am wrong) where people really knew the impacts of domestic abuse/violence against her personally and professionally. The first to really use her stage and voice, figuratively and literally, to raise up women facing the same. I will respect her most for that. And also, she was a damn good singer/songwriter.

    Twitter's announcement of so-called "end-to-end encrypted" direct messages is complete garbage and an exercise in gobbledygook. Here's the major caveats:

    1. It's not available to all Twitter users -- you must be subscribed to Twitter Blue
    2. It must be deliberately opt-in for use
    3. You can only send encrypted messages to people who follow you
    4. Does not work with groups
    5. Only works with text or links -- don't even think of encrypting photos!
    6. Where are these messages being stored?

    With all those caveats, why use Twitter's end-to-end encryption at all?

    Even Elon Musk doesn't trust this feature right now. He's said, "try it, but don’t trust it yet.”

    The last sentence of the article is literally the only reason I have any interest in Facebook anymore (I don’t have an account). It’s become the main place to buy/sell stuff in my community.

    “I really like Marketplace. I recently just moved, so that was where I got most of my furniture.”

    Maybe Facebook will spinoff Marketplace to compete directly with eBay/Craigslist/Kajiji. I’d probably sign up for that.

    You may have seen the announcement that mastodon.social is now "upgrading to a nightly build". This means that it is regularly releasing the latest and greatest version.

    And you may be wondering if this is unique, or something special that only Eugen can do? The answer is no, the same version is available for all instances to upgrade to as frequently as they want.

    Lot's of improvements rolling out. Exciting times.

    @mastodonmigration I may not go to nightly on my #selfhosted server only because… we’ll, I have a life and other things I like to do. But I definitely might see if I can create a weekly schedule for myself to incorporate the Sunday nightly builds or something. That’s plenty frequent for me. The only question I would have is how easy is it to roll back if something goes wrong?

    @rylancole It would all need to go through referendum for sure and would be a passionate topic, but I think it is inevitable in some respects and there are a number of issues that have come to a head that make it glaringly obvious that there are serious problems when it comes to democracy and fairness going all ways where all residents are being poorly served by the current parochial setup.
