holiday weekend, and I already knocked out the (very smol) work I'd promised to do, so now I can relax the rest of the day (already relaxed yesterday).
Excellent day yesterday, along with a nommy sushi dinner to wrap it up.
Made it to level 25 in Wanikani! #japanese Now manga is waiting for me, and google translate is helping a LOT. 😁
@TonyStark Hey there, I hope you are taking time to breathe and take care of yourself! I saw this on someone else's timeline and thought the absurdity reflects the kind of situation we find ourselves in-- 😜
I learned a character in #japanese the other day that was defined as amount; or picture frame. 🤬
I was swearing at that--how can one word have meanings that dissimilar? How can I remember that?
But then today walking in the city I passed the Latitude nightclub. I'd seen that in other cities-- it is a good name for a nightclub, in the sense of permission to bend the rules a bit.
Or a line in the map marking distance from the equator.
My wife and I came to the same conclusion that my latest activity in the streets along with previous online activity may hinder me from future employment.
To be fair, I haven't been the smartest in hiding my identity because I didn't really care.
I still don't care.
But it is hurting other people because I chose to live free of the system.
Spent an amazing afternoon and evening with students, staff, and faculty at UNC Chapel Hill at their Gaza encampment!
It was so awe inspiring to see how well the students were organized and how many people were conversing, talking about the issues, helping each other out!
It really goes to show that a community can thrive when it isn't based on capitalism but communal support!
It is a future I have dreamed about and believe we can achieve!
@majorlinux All I hear is "4 dead in Ohio..." 😥 I hope no one was seriously hurt! (A dislocated shoulder is bad, but I'm hoping there were no bullet holes.) Will they regroup, do you think?
yesterday I got the “are you a boy or are you a girl” question from a six-year-old, and I told her that some people aren’t boys or girls (like me!) I was expecting her to be a little confused, but she nodded thoughtfully and said, “wow, just like snails.”
Writing a thread on onboarding here, because I don't want to write it in the other place.
Context:
Good engineer onboarding is DEI. Teams that have great onboarding, tend to be more diverse and inclusive. Teams that have poor onboarding, tend to be more homogeneous and less diverse.
That's because poor onboarding makes life harder for junior employees and remote employees. Underrepresented groups benefit disproportionately from remote work options. Junior employees are a more diverse group.
@mekkaokereke Thank you for this reminder, as I have two new people joining my lab in another month and I have to figure out onboarding routines for them!
Interesting to think, there must be someone who is managing the energy supply in each region across N America who needs to ensure they're ready for when solar panels all along the #eclipse path lose power and the conventional grid needs to fill in for three minutes or so.
@ottaross ah ok! Surprisingly just a few pages down from your post on my TL was a post about solar battery farms in Canada... I'm thinking half an hour of total darkness will hardly be an issue compared, to say, night time.
Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:
White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.
They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.
Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage
Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.
@mekkaokereke I'm on the DEI committee for one of our university centers. We have a two year paid internship program for getting undergrads into STEM research. Our chair had to have many hours' conversation with the university lawyers about how we are recruiting, interviewing and selecting the winners of the competitions to get these positions. It came out we just had to drop our question that explicitly asked about diversity. We focused on adversity instead. It ends up with the same result.
