Wrapping up a very productive GNOME design call… about accent colors! We addressed every single blocking topic and have a clear way forward. I don’t want to promise anything specific (especially timelines), buuuut it’s looking good to me.

I might write up a blog post to summarize the direction once we sort some of the little details out. But there’s a pretty good consensus across half a dozen or so people doing the work—harder than it sounds. 😅

I watched The Acolyte last night, and forgot to share about it here!

Spoiler-free first impressions thread:

• I really like this era. 100 years before Episode III is close enough to the prequels to feel much more like them than anything else, but also, the Jedi are more at their peak than even then.

• So far there have been no references to or appearances of characters or planets that we know besides Coruscant. And I’m okay with this.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

Spoiler-free impressions of The Acolyte, continued:

• I like the vibe of the show. It feels different. It should: it is in a period we have never seen before with characters we have never met, facing a galaxy in a state we’ve never known.

• There were moments that reminded me of The Expanse, of a martial arts film, of a mystery/thriller flick. I like this combination. I want more!

• I love the cast of characters. Not too trope-y but… a little.

Spoiler-free impressions of The Acolyte, continued:

• I don’t think I felt the need/want to explain context or lore to others watching—refreshing after Ahsoka (which I also really enjoyed, to be fair, but for different reasons!)

• Okay yeah we have Nemoidians and Coruscant and Jedi with the Force and lightsabers and hyperspace… it is still 100% Star Wars

• I appreciate that it jives with The High Republic era aesthetically but that’s about it

Spoiler-free impressions of The Acolyte, continued:

• I want more! That’s a good thing. I remember so many people dogged on Andor for starting out slow, but it had to take its time to introduce you to the state of the galaxy, the characters, the motivations. This doesn’t feel as slow-burn (or as deep) as Andor, but just remember the first impressions of that show before you judge this one too hard from its premier. 😉

Shout out to Text Pieces! I needed to URL-encode a big ugly string (creating a template form from URL parameters, yay!) and yep, sure enough, it made it stupidly easy.

The next time you need to encode, transform, or convert some text on Linux, reach for this pretty little offline app instead of pasting your data into some random website. 👍

Got my Chipolo ONE Point! First impressions: yep, it’s a little Bluetooth item tracker. 😁

Interestingly, it has a button just like the standard Chipolo ONE, but it doesn’t do anything after the initial pairing. No ring-your-phone feature or anything… I wonder if that’s something Google will add to the Find My Device network/spec later? Not a big deal, I almost exclusively trigger that accidentally on my Tiles. 😅

Also, no explicit integration. 🤔

Yoooo this is genuinely really useful. The kitchen hub is right next to our key rack, so this tells me my keys are probably put away where they should be.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

Okay, neat, once I’m out of direct Bluetooth range, it shows an actual map (but still notes it’s pretty close by).

(The blacked out area is a street map.)

I can't work out if this is a bug or a weird KDE feature:

If you open the shutdown dialog and then press the super key it stops the count down timer. It's probably a feature that I don't understand why it exists but I'd like some insight

This is pricey (and glass, really??), but I kind of love the idea: some benefits of a fitness tracker & smartphone for kids, w/o the smartphone. Plus a Tamagotchi!

My oldest kid is a bit young for something like this, but Internet access freaks me out—yet I’d love for them to be able to contact me if they need. Other options in this space are clunky/ugly, so it’s refreshing to see something this polished here.

Nirav's #1 is making these laptops the best for - New meteor lake, and the new display looks great, 120hz with VRR.

They purposely picked 2880x1920 so that Linux users can avoid fractional scaling entirely.

Can retrofit it onto existing 13's too! I'm totally getting the display because of the rounded corners. Ximian lives!

I'm a total convert to electric toothbrushes 😁 my teeth feel so shiny!

But I don't know the difference between the "cheap" Sonicare toothbrush pair I bought at Costco and the more expensive versions because the Internet is trash.

Are we back to personal recommendations now?

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@pleia2 generally Costco mandates manufactures meet a certain price point, and then the manufacturer determines what exact product/features/etc. to develop or drop based on that price point. It’s the reason Casper mattresses are cheaper at Costco than from Casper themselves: they are actually a cheaper-made version with fewer layers, etc. Buuuut neither Costco nor the manufacturers really like advertising that, so it’s hard to figure out the differences.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@pleia2 Fwiw, I have had a Quip toothbrush for like a decade now and love it; it’s small, lightweight, uses normal batteries I can recharge, and my dentist says I do a good job brushing, lol

I think the actual toothbrush itself is way less important than the timer, the fact that it is vibrating the bristles on your teeth for you, and brushing regularly. 😅 I think it comes down more to preference around how they look/charge/store/etc. between all the electric ones.

An update to Tally, my desktop app for Plausible Analytics, is incoming! Tally 3.2.1 refreshes the visuals a bit, and I really like the more subtle look with the header bar. This addresses some feedback that the old look was too bold.

If you’re on Linux and use Plausible, grab the update from Flathub soon!

Love to lose half my working day because my laptop decided to corrupt its own BIOS. Again.

This is the second or third time I’ve had this issue on the Dell XPS 9310, and it’s a huge pain every time. Their forums and support site are full of incomplete information, wrong information, and steps that seem more like a seance than documentation. It seems to be triggered when the battery is low, but I’m not 100% sure.

Here’s how I recovered it, in case anyone else has this laptop and hits the issue…

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

I had to do this yet again, so I’ve documented these steps in a blog post—along with the near-superstitious-level tips that I’ve learned along the way.

The next time your Dell XPS laptop won’t boot, give this a try and let me know if it works?
