I'm currently exploring the possibility of using AnyType as my personal organization system, and I like the idea so far.

I especially like the fact that it's E2E encrypted and works on Linux. Very cool.

@RL_Dane it's usually compared to Notion or Obsidian if you've ever heard of those products.

Apparently, "most" of the source is available with a custom open-source-esque license. I think it uses IPFS for data syncing between devices.

@RL_Dane right? Where are all of the tricked out cyber-wave-punk enlightenment themes? 😁

Finally got my #3DPrinter de-bricked and working again.

Had to purchase a custom-ish eMMC adapter off of that scary retailer in China, and it took nearly three weeks to get here XD

Also got a webcam for it, and excitedly set it up, but... I can barely see anything, because of course, webcams are pretty wide-angle.

@RL_Dane good job rescuing your printer! For me, that’s half the fun.

@RL_Dane I would love to rescue your Ender 3, but would love even more to just meet you for lunch. I just need to find a gap in the schedule.

I designed a printable 3D model of the kids' beds from Bluey! This was super fun and rewarding as my preschooler has a bunch of the Bluey character figures and wanted to make their bedroom. I used stills from the show as reference, but proportioned it to fit the figures nicely.

@cassidy lol, the things we do for our kids!

I'm impressed. I've only mastered some simpler techniques in some CAD programs. Something like that looks to be out of my depth.

My wife and I are considering a trip this year to Barcelona with our two kids (11 and 14 at the time of the trip). First time for 3 of us to travel to Europe.

Does anyone have recommendations or thoughts? Assume we've researched most of the major tourist attractions. I'd love some local insight.

Also considering a train trip from Barcelona to Paris, and then flying back to US from Paris.

Wishing I had the skills and knowledge to port to my Lenovo IdeaCenter 300 stick.

This thing makes a great little xubuntu computer.

My neighbor gave me these two derelict machines. They’ve been sleeping with the critters in the shed for the past few years with no climate control. I’m going to try to clean them up and check for leaky capacitors before attempting to revive them.

Any bets on them coming back to life? 🤠

I'm trying to envision a OS designed for users who are visually impaired.

What if there was a super simple OS designed with strict resource limitations that optimized feedback through an audio interface instead of a graphical interface?

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@CharismaticBatman I love the idea of a a monochrome interface, but I would push this even further to an OS that has NO graphics, and optimizes speech synthesis and other forms of audio feedback.

I always see screen readers shoe-horned on top of a GUI designed for sighted users. Maybe non-visual users wouldn't want an exclusive interface, but I wonder what advancements and developments can be made from designing a purely audible OS.

It's funny to me that is my #1 featured hashtag on Mastodon.

Do I really talk about it that much? It must have been because of the time I started experimenting with it in late 2022.

brainofdane,

@RL_Dane that's funny. OpenBSD holds a special place in my heart, even though I've never actually gotten to the point of daily driving it. Alternative operating systems are my love language.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@royal 😂 😂 😂 I hope so! I've been reading some tutorials and watching some videos. I like the concepts and the syntax. I'll probably use it for a few personal projects, and then tuck it into a cozy place in my heart too.

My neighbor gave me an old Nook Simple Touch that had barely been used. Unfortunately, the exterior rubber/plastic is super sticky.

Using a few different types of chemicals did not seem work. I've scraped off a lot of the sticky-ness, but the bezel will probably disintegrate if I try.

I'm considering designing and 3d-printing a rudimentary case for the internals and scrapping the original.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@CharismaticBatman I almost broke out the sandpaper last night! I might have to do that for the back part of the case. The bezel is another story.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@cassidy interesting... I hadn't heard of a powder treatment. It might be worth my time to rescue the front bezel, since that's where the page turn buttons are. If not, I might resort to ripping it out and starting over.

@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

Hey #Gnome and #Fedora friends: my 2012 MacBook recently started to have major issues with gdm. Any time gdm is supposed to load, it either gets seriously laggy or the login box doesn't appear even though I can move the cursor around without any lag.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Are there any optimizations I can do to change this?

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@sesivany I tried this just a minute ago, and I'm getting the same performance issue. It's a good thought, though. Wayland has been great, but still has its issues.

What if in the Star Wars universe they totally have the technology for higher-fidelity holograms and transmissions, but @EposVox is just like really popular and so everyone has adopted the low color and static as an aesthetic choice? 🤔

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@cassidy i love this point of view! Similar to the original instagram trend of making photos look “vintage”.

Except in this case the hologram system is owned by a company like Microsoft that resists making aesthetic changes because “it’s what people are used to, and what they expect when they turn their holograms on.”

Haiku OS is cute and all, but I'm thinking about converting my Thinkpad back to Debian with a lightweight desktop.

I wanted to try to use Haiku as a daily driver, but it fell over when I tried to set up gmail on the default e-mail app. Everything was configured correctly, but only the folders/tags synced, not the e-mails.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@CharismaticBatman yeah, I know that's an option. There are a few other things that just don't line up. mail was just the last straw for me.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@CharismaticBatman yeah! It really is a nice OS with some great applications. I personally thought PoorMan was a nice touch, and something that would be an inspiration to get more people on the "smol web".

I might have to go back to it in a few months and try again.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@CharismaticBatman I kept toying with it a little bit last night, and I apparently pushed it to some limit that caused it to crash.

I had multiple tabs open in Falkon, some terminal windows open, and I was running PoorMan. I was suddenly confronted with the debug screen, and had to do a hard reboot.

Overall, it’s really stable on bare metal. I suspect it was Falkon that caused it to crumble.

brainofdane,
@brainofdane@hachyderm.io avatar

@CharismaticBatman I thought that was strange too. It feels like a very personal OS, but also somewhat insecure because of it.
