Friendica (my Fediverse platform of choice) is now bi-directional when it comes to Bluesky posts. This should be interesting...

FWIW, I polled my fiction-podcast audience on what socials they use other than Twitter and Facebook. 531 responses. The poll was done in a private Facebook group.

brian,

@ScottSigler Looking forward to Threads finally joining the Fediverse, since I have some friends who went that direction. I run my own instance, so there's no fear of dealing with an anti-Meta admin.

You know how on the interwebs you start looking at something on Google or Wiki etc, and end up so far down a rabbit hole, you wonder how on Earth you will find you way back before nightfall? Yeah, we've all been there.
Well I ended up on a Wiki page that was listing Welsh singers, and I was amazed to see no Tom Jones anywhere.
What the hell? Isn't he the epitome of a Welsh singer?
Who writes these things?
Ok, calm down, rant over. Warm and fuzzy guys, warm and fuzzy.

@LadyParadis As much as some people rail on Wikipedia, at least they're accurate in that regard.

Getting back into streaming, now that computer stability issues are resolved.
Tonight's game?

montag, to helpers German

Hello ,

is it possible that this pull request prevents the federation from Friendica to Lemmy? Or is it just my instance? Posting from my instance to a Lemmy community does not work, if I try from Libranet it works.

brian,

@montag @utzer Fail2Ban doesn't usually monitor frequency of connections to a web server, but it can work with (at least on Apache) mod_security or mod_evasive, which can block based on that. Fail2Ban can then monitor the logs of those modules and trigger longer blocks of IPs that are really persistent. If it's happening a lot, then apparently some people need to tune their security measures a little.

I've fallen in love with RSS again.

I use the Android Feeder client which is very simple and compact layout.

I only use feeds which contain full articles, not links to paywall content.

And of course, my favourite thing is linking to personal blogs from people I follow on the fediverse.

This results in a quick to scroll, engaging feed that beats Google news hands down.

#uk #news #rss #wordpress

brian,

@chrisshaw It's nice, isn't it? 😀
Been self-hosting FreshRSS here since late 2020, and using Feedly for years before that.

brian,

@chrisshaw It has a client API as well, and for Android right now my favorite app to work with it is FeedMe. Most of the time, though, I'm just reading with a browser.

brian,

@chrisshaw At least there's not much that needs to be done as far as administration for it, once it's set up. I just subscribed to new releases for it on Github, and update when one is announced.

chrisshaw, to random

If I comment on a writefreely article, where do those comments go?

I can see mine and other comments show up in mastodon, but I can't see them on the orginal blog page.

#writefreely

brian,

@chrisshaw Wherever they go, it seems they're not visible to anyone. I thought they might have been visible only to the blog author, but maybe not?

github.com/writefreely/writefr…

brian,

@chrisshaw Been looking at Drupal for that kind of thing, myself, and the ActivityPub module there is still very much a work in progress. If nothing else, I can set up a bot account on my Friendica instance, and a script that periodically pulls from the blog RSS to post to that account.

chrisshaw, to Futurology

The most important point for me is that I'm highly likely to actually know people on Facebook, so being able to see and interact with them from within mastodon is a big selling point.

Yes, I know I could actually join FB to do that as well, but I don't really want two social media apps on my phone.

In the fediverse, it feels as if ideology should always trump convenience.

#meta #fediverse #mastodon #facebook

brian,

@chrisshaw If memory serves, it'll actually be Instagram people you'll be interacting with, unless something has changed. Last I heard, people would be using their IG credentials to log into that thing, and there isn't a 100% overlap between FB and IG users.

chrisshaw, to mastodon

I feel completely locked out of this meta debate, being just a mere user rather than an instance admin.

Why can't users just decide themselves whether to block Facebook?

I get that it's their (the admins) platform, but it's our content.

Or is the whole point of being decentralised that you have to align with regional power?

brian,

@chrisshaw @brandoncarey Fortunately, open source has a way to fight back against that kind of thing. One example: MariaDB was born out of concerns over Oracle buying MySQL, it's a drop-in replacement, and is actually better in some respects.

chrisshaw, to fediverse

Did Tumblr ever join the fediverse?

I seem to remember a lot of hand wringing about that a few months ago but that's gone strangely quiet since all this Facebook discussion.

#fediverse #mastodon #tumblr

brian,

@chrisshaw I'm waiting for that to happen, as well. In the meantime, I'm playing around with Friendica's Tumblr connector. It's not a perfect merger of Fedi and Tumblr, but it does at least get them both in the same UI.

The admins of tens of Mastodon instances have agreed to block Meta's upcoming ActivityPub service and prevent Meta users from connecting to most of the Fediverse.

https://fedipact.online/

brian,

@chrisshaw @campuscodi Yep, in a wait-and-see mode here as well. The only times I proactively block instances are when they're on the FediBlock list for things that would be illegal on my server, and with text-only I don't see that being a problem.

brian,

@chrisshaw @campuscodi It's all about what the server is designed to do. According to everything I've read, Meta's ActivityPub service will be text-only. I'm guessing that means they'll only be able to make text posts, but I don't know if they'll see images from other instances. If they do, I'd expect Meta to cache images locally.

brian,

@chrisshaw @campuscodi As far as I know, each Fediverse instance handles hashtags on its own. I only plan to interact with their service if either I know someone using it or if someone using it follows me.

So Johnson resigns, triggering a by-election, & spouting some Trumpian classics on his way out: his downfall a 'witch hunt' aiming to reverse Brexit, apparently, not a self-inflicted horror show of lies, lies, lies and yet more lies.

The cherry on the top: "Boris Johnson added he thought the Privileges Committee members knew “in their hearts” he did not lie."

Delusional, sociopathic & apparently considering another go at being PM!

#ToriesOut #ukpolitics #Johnson

brian,

@clarebee If only we could have gotten Trump to resign, over here. Pence has his problems, too, but at least he's relatively stable.

Sometimes less is more.

Our next version will be much easier to install 😉

brian,

@pixelfed Hopefully more clarification as well as far as which parts of it absolutely need to be writable by the web server account. Surely making the whole thing writable isn't necessary.

brian,

@pixelfed @eliasp Curious about that, too. Friendica, for example, doesn't NEED Redis but it can use it for sessions and caching if you have it.

Content farms have basically eaten the first two to three pages of a typical Google search.

This morning I was trying to find information about the relative safety of different space heater designs, and 95% of the results were long, rambly bullshit posts written by Jim Smith the Extremely Real Engineer Man for AllAboutSpaceHeaters.com and filled with Amazon affiliate links.

Wow, AI is going great. I can't wait to see how this amazing technology will help humanity next.

brian,

@confluency If it's not a content farm, then it's someone trying to sell you something, and they're not even paying for the ad space. I'm not just talking about affiliate links here...

attn: MUD developers

last year, a grad school classmate of mine died at the age of 38. every student and professor who met Geoff Hollis learned that he was a brilliant scholar, a sharp thinker, and a superb university lecturer.

but only a handful of his friends knew that geoff was also one hell of a coder. he spent nights as a grad student building his own MUD engine in C - from scratch, with a built-in custom scripting language - just for the fun of it.

nakedMUD enjoyed several years of regular development and usage from mud designers, before jeff had to shelve it due to his teaching responsibilities.

when he died, his university server space was wiped without a backup, and all of his source code went with it. i've got the most recent version of nakedMUD (3.8.1), but i'd like to preserve v1.0 to v3.8 in his memory.

if you happen to have filenames in the format nakedmudv1.0.tar.tgz sitting around on old drives, i'd love to hear from you. i'm building a little source shrine for geoff, so nakedMUD can live on in memory of a kind, gentle soul.

brian,

@vga256 Sounds like he and I would have gotten along well. I did the same sort of thing, just for fun, but in my case it never developed past an engine and a dream. Good luck.

brian,

@chrisshaw For something truly phony, look at the so-called "War on Christmas" in the US.
