This is a horrible precedent and I truly hope it doesn't become more widely adopted elsewhere. https://ua.usembassy.gov/message-for-u-s-citizens-elimination-of-residence-abroad-exception-to-dual-citizen-departure/

I threw out my back and somehow in the process of Googling what to do I learned that I’m almost as old as some of the Golden Girls. These are not good turns of events.

I get that it's actually a terrible business and a wonderful way to burn your life savings down to the ground, but it would be so much fun to run a little neighborhood café. Great coffee? Organic nibbles? Live music? Themed nights? Free meeting space for radical groups looking to mobilize? Bliss.

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@mitch Counterpoint: it puts the emphasis on the coffee rather than the space. I'm really thinking of a café like a pub: a third space living room to hang out in.

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@mitch Oh for sure. If I had a magic wand, it would be an owned building, not a lease.

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@mitch I love this approach!

I'm out in Elkins Park and would kill for someone to open any kind of decent café, cart or otherwise. I would live there.

A space just closed down and I was hoping for one - but no, it's yet another pizza / steaks / hoagie joint. Sigh.

This is a lovely piece about Tony Stubblebine, who, as it rightly says, is doing an excellent job as the new CEO of Medium. #Technology https://werd.io/2024/how-tony-stubblebine-turned-medium-around-in-the-ai-era

Interesting business model: UK broadcasters are trading unused ad space for equity in digital media startups, turning them into venture-scale investors. https://werd.io/2024/uk-broadcasters-trade-ad-airtime-for-advertisers-shares

"Zoom founder Eric Yuan has big ambitions in enterprise software, including letting your AI-powered ‘digital twins’ attend meetings for you." Such a bizarre vision of the future. https://werd.io/2024/zoom-ceo-eric-yuan-wants-ai-clones-in-meetings

@Jennifer Strongly agree. It's extremely weird that the ideas are coming up in the first place.

It's super-weird seeing progressive groups send out messages about how the Republicans don't respect the flag.

I don't think having respect for the flag is a progressive value. It's a symbol. It's the conservatives who complained about disrespect of the flag for generations. Seriously, who cares?

Now, disrespect for democracy is another matter.

There's no good way to prevent AI models from being trained on art published on the fediverse. But there's work we can do to prevent it and protect the artists who post there. https://werd.io/2024/protecting-artists-on-the-fediverse

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@Gargron It should be, and maybe it even is, but until someone actually stops them from doing it, the problem persists. Some lightweight protections feel important in that context.

A climate scientist becoming the first woman president of Mexico feels like such a big deal. I'm not deeply familiar with Mexican politics, but to my eyes she seems really great.

Seeing a lot of artists joining Cara suddenly. It really needs fediverse compatibility if it really wants to help artists find their audiences.
