A couple years ago a take was making the rounds that it's impossible to be a senior software engineer with 3 years of engineering experience, that it's got to be title inflation.

I wonder what those folks would say now that I'm staff software engineer, 5 years out of a coding bootcamp 😂😂😂

Actually you know what'd make them even more mad: I started working as a swe in september 2019 and got the staff title in december 2023 🤑

But tbh I know that it's warranted - I personally value years of experience and I know I have a lot to learn, so I didn't ask for this promotion. However objectively speaking, I am operating at a level higher than senior and close to the principal engs where I work.

I'd like to also mention that I was explicitly a diversity hire once, hired at the Grace Hopper Conference. Sometimes I miss the hate on Twitter bc I love rubbing that into the tech bros faces lol

One thing I’ve struggled with a bit in my career is, I’ve been a generalist who is really good at a very large number of things instead of a specialist who is very good at a small number of things.

That wasn’t always a positive thing early on, but at a senior level it is absolutely something that differentiates you.

I’m exceptionally good at explaining computers to people, and people to computer people.

These days I have noticed that my being a "jack-of-all-trades" is actually respected and rewarded at my work, but tbh I was a bit worried that this was just the context of working in a startup. There should be sanctions for businesses that do layoffs. Or even before that there should be more worker protection preventing layoffs ofc but also these businesses should experience financial sanctions

Sorry preaching to the choir here, it's just wild to me that they can do this stuff in total impunity.
One of my best friends was one of the few Twitter employees in the Netherlands. When Elon did the big layoffs they offered him a settlement in exchange for not suing, you know the standard. He said no and took them to court and basically got like 10x what they had offered him

Also: this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but my sister is looking for a job in Dubai or remote!

In October she adopted our 14-year-old niece, who lost both her parents (my cousin and her ex) 💔. My sister has owned a small food supply business for the last 5 years now, but now being a single mom, she's looking for a more stable and secure income.

She has a background in business and has worked in corporate and back-office for Chanel, LVMH and Cartier to name a few.

The army has had to recruit really quickly to scale to fight terrorism, so I am hoping this is not a top-down order and rather a rogue batallion... which is only marginally better... but IB's silence is very concerning.
and even more concerning is the fact that this news has been totally omitted from lefaso.net and burkina24
