Sometimes it feels like half of my social media is annoyed because they think climate activists are making unreasonable demands

While the other half is near-panic because they've done the research and realise that, in the understated words of the Magic Eight Ball, "outlook not so good"

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@baldur That fits my own experience quite well. Not just on social media but also in personal relationships. That distortion field between those who follow climate science closely and those who just read whatever is in the news couldn't be any bigger. It really feels like two completely different realities.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@baldur Even those who are worried, but don't follow the scientific discourse closely, often seem to agree that it is really bad, but totally underestimate the scale of it and especially the realistic outcome. I feel like a lot of people still think it's comparable to the hole in the ozone layer. It's bad, but it's fixable. The idea of irreversable damage and the inertia of our planetary systems isn't understood at all.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@baldur It's particularly tragic to see this with my own eyes from like 8-10 years ago, because I was exactly the same before I started to follow the field closely.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@baldur I went through quite some stages of grief because of it in the last years and I often think "shit, they still have all of that ahead of themselves".

@randahl As a German, I can only say that his way of communicating or not communicating at all often leaves huge logic gaps in so many political fields. He's absolutely terrible at this.

Do you need some good news? We only have to replace one-third of the energy generated by fossil fuels with renewables to meet our energy demand. Sounds weird? Here’s why: https://youtu.be/EVJkq4iu7bk?si=OuVh11T0jPnr_bGI

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@davatron5000 Absolutely. And it has so many additional, positive implications about required costs, materials, reduction of transportation of fuels and more. To see how ridiculously bad our current system really is from an economical standpoint, really makes me hopeful that an avalanche of positive changes is possible.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@davatron5000 Very good point. That huge gray bucket of rejected energy is just feeling plain wrong throughout the video and if you break that down on a personal level it's a really powerful message indeed.

Almost every popular climate science post on Threads, LinkedIn and Insta is drowned by climate denial comments. 99,999% men. LinkedIn is particularly bad at the moment. I hardly ever see such comments here. Why? My assumption: the fediverse is mostly irrelevant for bots and deniers. Black marketing doesn't work here in the same way. But it is extremely successful over there. The number of people who react to such comments and start long, exhausting fights is mind-blowing.

It reminds me of this fantastic AI talk by Maggie Appleton at @btconf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYJd5y3awPc

The social web out there is turning into a dark forest, where AI bot accounts are indistinguishable from real humans and the comment sections are turning into fights between humans and bots. Those who are not aware or don't find a safe spaces get sucked into a bleak parallel reality, where facts are long gone and political opinions are shaped by those who are best at black marketing.

Oh FFS. Just listened to a rather popular German radio station and the host discusses „with an open mind“ where we think all those extreme weather events might come from. Yeah, awesome. Let’s discuss next with an open mind if gravity actually exists or if it’s just a made up concept by the parachute industry.

The German Government hoped to reach 88 GW of PV capacity by the end of 2024. We've reached that goal this month 🎉

We can definitely use more good news like this: https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/ndrdata/Deutschland-erreicht-gesetzliches-Ziel-fuer-Solarausbau,erneuerbare106.html

As developers, we deal with practical challenges every day. Often, we’re so focused on the technical part of development that we forget the real purpose of our jobs. It’s not solving technical issues; it’s building products for human beings. What we do is very technical at its core, but the consequences of our decisions are very human: they strongly affect people’s lives, their access to information, and their participation in society.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@matuzo To be able to zoom out and put yourself in the shoes of the users – or when writing docs in the shoes of the beginners – is almost like training a muscle. It's never happening automatically and the longer you spend time on a project, the more you have to put effort into training that muscle. That's why we IMHO see so much focus on DX instead. It's the lazy option that feels good and you expect it to have the same effect but it simply isn't true.

Our son is currently learning about recycling in their science class. He brought home this bar chart about unrecycled raw materials and rare-earth elements in old phones and the numbers are pretty mind-boggling.

I double-checked them and – no surprise if you know the German school system – they seemed to be pretty outdated but still mostly correct.

More recent numbers say that we are already at roughly 220 million unrecycled phones in Germany. (translation in the alt text)

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

I don't know the exact rate at which those materials can be extracted. Would be very interesting to know. But it's still a huge potential of reusing what's already there. Also keep in mind that those are just phones. Laptops, TVs and other devices come on top of that.

Book recommendation (German only so far): "Männer, die die Welt verbrennen" by @ChristianStoecker

https://www.ullstein.de/werke/maenner-die-die-welt-verbrennen/hardcover/9783550202827

The Spiegel author collects decades of research about the unbelievable connections between the fossil industry, global right wing movements, investors, banks, media publishers and more. It's like a giant puzzle and suddenly a lot of pieces fit together like never before. I enjoyed it a lot. The title is provocative (Men who burn the world), but it's also pretty spot on.

Journalist: "So what do you think long-distance air travel is going to look like in 2050?"

Climate Scientist laughs derisively: "By 2050, most long-distance holiday destinations will be uninhabitable, so I expect the majority of long-distance air traffic to be non-existent by 2050."

Phew. Hadn't heard it THAT bleakly during a live interview yet.

Please read this as what it is: anecdotal evidence. But it tells you a lot about the current status of computer science education in Germany.

Always.
