One more meeting to go before I can call this day a wrap. Been pretty much non-stop since 3am, so final meeting ending at 4.30pm is going to be a relief.

Husband's Thermomix has arrived today. Can confirm it's slightly shocking when it sends out a 360º LIDAR pulse on initial setup to identify all competing products in the vicinity. Also it has assimilation tubules to lock itself to the bench top? That bit was disturbing.

@jpm We don't do rice, so that's not so much a problem.

Husband has previously had a Kitchen Aid Cook Processor, which we've had great value out of, so it should go OK.

Solar installation takes place tomorrow. 14.96kW of panels, and 16kW of battery. It'll be great to see this complete.

A reminder that the best ever cover of Sound of Silence was not from Disturbed, but The Kransky Sisters. No song has ever so suited a saw.

Less than 24 hours between ordering and delivery. I have never seen a pakkidge move so fast for only spending $35 including delivery.

@jpm @trib Thanks, hadn't heard of them. Will give them a go, as we usually need another batch of coffee each month in addition to our St Ali subscriptions.

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@jpm @trib Close as we can tell our monthly bean consumption is around 2.5-2.75kg, and that's with me having pods for those 2am calls when it would be too noisy to operate the normal coffee machine :)

Personal theory: LLMs deliver all of the enthusiasm of a 7-year old breathlessly describing a stegosaurus while less than the guaranteed accuracy of the same.

A few days ago I made the awful verbal flub of calling smoked cheese "smorked cheese" and now that phrase and naming lives with me forever.

I'm inclined to think the solution isn't dumb phones, but users taking stronger steps to manage their notifications. You don't have to turn your phone into a slave collar, even if the default posture from every application vendor is just that.

Thinking about making a split keyboard. I don't really have the skills to design one so I'll just get something from online, but I think they're really cool nonetheless.

Anyone have any recommendations of designs?

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman Best split keyboard on the market is the Kinesis Ergo range, but it's very $$$

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman Can't say I know what that means in this case. I use the standard Advantage2 whenever my RSI gets too intense. It's split but in a single form factor. You can get fully split Kinesis as well though.

Someone recently suggested to me that has "improved" in Australia and convinced me to try it again.

I can safely say after grudgingly agreeing to try it again yesterday, while it might be possible to say that it has "improved", it is "improved" in the same way that eating 3 rat turds would be an "improvement" over eating having to eat 5.

Got a broken USB-3 port on my Mac Mini: nothing plugged into that works at all. The flow on is that it seems to cause some mouse stuttering if I also have a USB-C hub plugged in. (And that's regardless of whether I use the mouse in Bluetooth or USB mode.) And it's out of warranty. I had been thinking I'd keep it for another couple of years but now I'm not so sure. Doesn't require immediate replacement but it is irking me.

(Because it's an Intel based system, I'm not sure I want to bother with the whole out-of-warranty repair costs.)

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@jpm @bobthomson70 Interesting. I may make a case to the Power That Be that it should be repurposed as the machine for our eZone. It'd still be fine for that, and that'll let me put the Mac Pro trashcan system on display instead.
