Beautiful post about a superb artist, David Robinson, master wood carver, who clearly communes with the spirit of the wood as well as that of nature.

More law sneaked in without scrutiny, letting water companies completely off the bankruptcy hook so that, yet again, the state takes the hit, not the happy shareholders who can just ‘restructure’ the debt and merrily carry on fleecing us.

Whenever there is flooding, I see claims that it is lack of river dredging. No, it’s warmer air holding more water dumping it in increased quantities on land that cannot store it because there are daily increases in hard surface — roads, concrete, roofs, parking; compacted soils; straightened watercourses which increase run off speed and loss of mature trees and vegetation which could hold water. Useful guide to the facts: https://www.ciwem.org/assets/pdf/Policy/Reports/Floods-and-Dredging-a-reality-check.pdf

Interesting take on littering: a symptom of anger, power and disenfranchisement, rather than ‘lazy good-for-nothing’? The capitalist profit-is-all society generating as much rubbish as possible.

What’s your view of the headlock supermarkets have on food producers? Have a look at Riverford’s
https://youtu.be/NEjxwAJDEzY?feature=shared
who are campaigning for fair trading with growers — buy what you agreed at the price you promised. Growers can only produce food if they’re paid enough to at least cover the cost, otherwise we have no food. And if we want them to produce with minimal impact on the planet, it costs more.

Good morning Mastodon. I hope you're having a nice day.

In my head, when I saw the sign, this was very funny. I accept the possibility that it's only funny to me, but just in case...

I may write an article on the blog in a little while. I wish to make more buckets to make sure this was not an accident and allow you to do it at home.

“We can feed 10 billion people, using sustainable agricultural practices that sequester carbon and boost biodiversity. But to do that, we need to embrace complexity and get away from this ‘100-acre field with a monocrop’ approach.” Riverford in Positive News

Well-argued article in the discrimination against boaters without home moorings. Like Braverman saying make tents for the homeless illegal rather than providing affordable homes, CRT’s intention is to price ‘homeless’ boaters off the canal. The itinerant boaters who are perceived as a problem are those unable to afford any other home—and why is that?—but the impact is felt also by those who happily choose a life exploring the country.

anamckellar, to Halloween

Over 18,000 tonnes of pumpkins are grown and wasted every year because of the gross commercialisation of halloween. Along with the mountain of single-use plastic trash it generates. What a colossal waste of resources, including the land and fossil fuels to grow and transport the pumpkins. Plus the wildlife that dies from the toxic waste which people dump. It wouldn’t be so bad if people at least used the flesh and seeds.

@smallcircles @helenclayton The loss of the varied old traditions is sad, especially one that sounds so wholesome and fun. It seems mainland Europe countries have held out longer against the american market infiltration. Britain is always quick to ape whatever America does.

Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.

Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

anamckellar,

@WuMargaret @brennansv @finestructure An apartment block I lived in talked of changing half the little-used gym space into desk space. It didn’t happen, too far ahead of its time, but it would now as the people proposing it didn’t want to commute but wanted to separate work space from home; going up a floor achieved everything for them.
We need to build workspace on the doorstep of living space again. Every new housing estate/block should have a ‘rent a desk/workshop’ ‘facility.

Was the house built with adequate insulation, Harriet, or were you able to retrofit well enough? I’ve been looking at the latter possibilities and it seems a daunting and costly process.

In Q1, wind provided the largest share of power in any quarter in the history of the country’s electricity grid.
Wind 32.4% 24.0 TWh
Gas 31.7% 23.4 TWh
Imports 12.6% 9.2 TWh
Nuclear 12.5% 9.2 TWh
Biomass 5.7% 4.2 TWh
Solar 2.3% 1.7 TWh
Hydro 1.5% 1.1 TWh
Coal 1.3% 0.9 TWh

With imports so low WHY are we still paying huge #energy bills?!
Because no matter what the mix, the price is locked to the most expensive fuel. It’s more than time to change energy pricing.

“Tech CEOs want us to believe that generative #AI will benefit humanity. They are kidding themselves … as the ever-worsening climate and extinction crises show us every day, plenty of powerful people and institutions seem to be just fine knowing that they are helping to destroy the stability of the world’s life-support systems, so long as they can keep making record profits that they believe will protect them and their families from the worst effects…”
