Dream of Splendor is a historical romance drama that I absolutely adore. I love how it features a mature relationship between a beautiful couple, and that it also highlights the food and tea culture, music and art of the Song dynasty.

Biden: "Do you mean literally?"

Me: "What? No, I mean helping them and offering to work with them and pretending they're fucking normal politici - wait, why would you ask a question like that?"

Biden: "Uhh, no reason..."

“ Many of the protesters who fill the streets of their cities week after week have no immediate relation to the European past of the Shoah. They judge Israel by its actions in Gaza rather than its Shoah-sanctified demand for total and permanent security. Whether or not they know about the Shoah, they reject the crude social-Darwinist lesson Israel draws from it – the survival of one group of people at the expense of another.”

The Shoah after Gaza

There is too much in this incredible LRB essay and lecture by Pankaj Mishra for me to in any way adequately summarise; please read or listen to it all. He is right; what is happening now is shaking the foundations of the post 1945 moral universe (if there ever really was one). But what will come next? As he says:

“the arc of the moral universe does not bend towards justice”

Gaza is often correctly identified as the world’s largest concentration camp.

Some people object to this on the grounds that Gaza does not resemble a Nazi death camp, because that is what they associate with the term “concentration camp.”

Here’s an example of this sort of mistake (or perhaps deliberate obfuscation):

@HeavenlyPossum when I lived in Weimar, I could see Buchenwald from my window. Mostly a concentration camp for political dissidents (hence not necessarily Jewish), used also by the DDR in the years after the war. As the name implies, the camp is in the middle of a beautiful forest.
However, I personally agree more with Masha Gessen’s take on Gaza as a ghetto, instead of a concentration camp.

alx,
@alx@mastodon.design avatar

@HeavenlyPossum yes, but while people in concentration camps are completely isolated from societal activities, people in ghettos are still - in a limited and controlled amount - allowed to participate in some economic activity. Ghettos were used also in the Third Reich, liquidated only later.

The Israeli playbook:

  1. Create a man-made humanitarian crisis
  2. Let in tiny amounts of aid
  3. Shoot at starving people as they scramble to get aid
  4. Tell the world "it's their own fault"
  5. Repeat, over and over again

Just spent the last 30 minutes explaining to Tumblr official accounts that third-party scraping must be an opt-in option, not opt-out.
How is your evening going?

I'm signing off to continue reading my dystopian imperial book about a misunderstood people that everyone want to ethnically cleanse so that they can stole and exploit their land (no, not the news, it's Dune)
