If anyone is interested, I will be giving a talk on refactoring Erlang at Code BEAM Europe in Berlin on 19 October/

I see our instance is now on Mastodon 4.2.0.

Thanks @SocialCoop tech team

So it just struck me that the approach I am taking for the GHC CPP processing is basically what Erlang also does.

Back in the day I had a system set up so that I posted my latest 1000 char rant on Google+. It then got automagically reposted in various lengths to my blog, Facebook, Twitter, and a couple of other places. At the same time music played in Winamp got reported to last.fm, to blog sidebar, to Skype status.

RSS + APIs + a little PHP + dlvr.it

I need this again. Mastodon to X, Threads.net, Bluesky, Pebble, Facebook, NextDoor.

Write once, publish everywhere.

@jbond

It sounds like you are thinking of "publish on your own site, syndicate everywhere".

We have proportional representation in South Africa. It means each party has a list of who will be an MP, depending on the fraction of the vote. So the MPs are beholden to the party high-ups, not the voters.

On the day the Google antitrust case goes to trial, I get a pop-up notification from Google Play that I can install other search engines as default.

I love the emacs 29 --init-dir startup argument. It lets me experiment with complete alternative setups, so play with e.g. https://emacs-config-generator.fly.dev/

I am on some Mozilla email list that periodically sends news. I generally skim the mail but do not click anything.

They are now telling me I am scheduled to be removed, with a mail titled "Are you there".

So much for the anti-tracking company.

So I can get rid of quelpa in favour of package-vc-install, as per https://tony-zorman.com/posts/package-vc-install.html

I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that the standard install for a lot of software nowadays is to pipe a url off the internet into bash...

To me it is setting people up to be hacked, by normalising running random stuff off the internet.

And mostly sudo too

The last thing I have running on my Linode (now Akamai) VPS is an instance of FreshRSS. I'm kind of wondering if @SocialCoop might be interested in running an RSS Reader like FreshRSS or maybe NewsBlur for members.

A partial transcript of the stark warning issued in the video below by renowned professor Kevin Anderson…

We are heading towards 3° to 4°C of warming across this century, an absolute climate catastrophe for all species including our own. And all we are doing so far is giving rhetoric and optimism and greenwash.

We are locking in very high levels of sea level rise, maybe 7 to 8 meters. We are changing weather and rainfall patterns as well as insect pollination of our crops. All of this plays out in one disaster after another. We’re talking about societal collapse here.

Countries make various promises about what they are going to do against climate change. These promises are a disaster and overly optimistic because they only rely on future generations, our children and grandchildren, to develop technologies that we don’t have today.

Pseudo-technologies are a facade to avoid asking the difficult political and equity-based questions. 'Net Zero' is a dangerous term in my view, and really means NOT zero. I always say 'net zero' is latin for 'kick the can down the road'.

I have to be honest and say as someone who has worked on climate change for years, my best guess is that we are going to fail. But it is a choice to fail. Political leaders, academia, and journalism have repeatedly chosen to fail on climate for 30 years.

It is a choice to fail, and it’s a choice to succeed. If we sit back and wait for the great and good to deliver this change, then we will fail. It comes down to all of us to play our role as best as we can in fighting the climate crisis. Hope arises from civility society.

If I recall correctly from Collapse by Jared Diamond, us humans have screwed this up before, with predictable results.
