I know this is silly, but I highlight text while I'm reading it and for some reason the left and right sides of commit messages on GitHub get highlighted when I select the commit text and it really distracts me (unsure if this is a Safari thing or what, and yes I am aware of how silly it is for me to be distracted by this)

akahn,

@tenderlove it’s not unreasonable or silly to expect stuff to just work normally

Learned loads about lime quarrying and cement production today. The Brandenburg Gate’s materials came from here (and most everything else in Berlin you see today).

In the tunnels under the hill in pic #4 on the far right, the Nazi government hid the national science library from allied bombing and the GDR government had its emergency bunkers there.

Limestone monoliths across earth ages.

@janl I love the rocks showing off the raw material. Was awed by this iron ore recently (donated by US Steel of course)

    I played one of this game’s endless march of pre-release versions last year on . It provided some of the finest hours of gaming I’ve ever experienced, stopped dead by one of the absolute worst single moments.

    I hope they’ve tuned that balance a little better! (Though honestly that mostly means “make non-permadeath the first option on the new-game screen, and rename the options to suggest it’s the best starting place”)

    @jmac it seems like the problem stems from the question of whether it’s a roguelike or an RPG. Maybe it was initially conceived of as the former but became the latter over the course of development?

    Maybe instead of randomly banning TikTok and only TikTok with a corporate bill of attainder we could try to come up with more general ethical rules we expect tech companies to follow like "don't 'secretly pay teenagers' for their private data" https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

    I knew Meta was bad, but… wow.

    akahn,
    @akahn@mastodon.social avatar

    @glyph how did this work? wouldn’t a VPN only be able to see TLS-encrypted traffic?

    akahn,
    @akahn@mastodon.social avatar

    @glyph @xgranade aha, you already answered my question. This makes sense. They can’t see actual encrypted data, but can infer enough to learn a lot of what they want to know.

    When you fight for bike lanes in your town and read about fights in other towns, you quickly find that the same arguments come up again and again. Some of them are silly, some serious. I think this is the best and most substantive article I've read about the three most common political arguments against bike lanes (ignoring the "but they run stop signs" one). Well worth your time. https://www.tvo.org/article/debunking-three-big-myths-about-bike-lanes #BikeTooter #RoadSafety

    akahn,
    @akahn@mastodon.social avatar

    @marcprecipice we’re getting parking-separated bike lanes and people are freaking out about safety of passengers exiting their vehicles into the lane.

    and also vehicular cyclists doing Hangover math to argue that bike lanes actually make cyclists less safe.

    so thanks for this

    Vampire Survivors couch co-op is so, so fun. It's clearly what the game wanted from the start.

    I recently evangelized VS to coworkers as engagingly stupid and marvelously accessible. It's ugly as hell, requires only one hand, and expresses hilarity by just presenting large numbers.

    Still, I found it frustrating to play solitaire, and put it down for most of a year until a friend visited with her Switch to demonstrate its newer co-op mode. Amy and I have been playing daily on #SteamDeck since.

    I just posted a reflection on the 10 year anniversary(!) of our Lineman.js CLI.

    Couldn't stop thinking about how the best frontend tools often fail for the wrong reasons https://blog.testdouble.com/posts/2023-10-16-must-have-10-years-experience-with-lineman-js/

    akahn,
    @akahn@mastodon.social avatar

    @searls I see a lot in common with Evan Czaplicky's talk at Strange Loop recently, on the business model of programming languages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ3w_jec1v8

    It's a shame tools like React won such a dominant marketshare position while not being the right tool for so many jobs.

    A long-dormant wish to learn music was activated by a visit to the amazing Moogseum in Asheville.

    I fell in love with electronic music as a listener decades ago, but I never really thought about the science of its production before. I came away from my visit starving to know more.

    akahn,
    @akahn@mastodon.social avatar

    @jmac :) we’re all a big family. Maybe it’s something about “making weird noises” being as valid a use of the instruments as making “music” is, so there’s less presumption of skill, talent, virtuosity, (or even artistic intent!) than other instruments

    akahn,
    @akahn@mastodon.social avatar

    @jmac same. I dove into making music for a few years and now have largely moved on to other interests, but I gained so much useful context to understand the stuff I listen to.
