Absolute jaw drop

Go to SNCF Grandes Lignes ticket office and ask why SNCF Connect cannot sell me tickets to Berlin any more

“C’est la faute de Deutsche Bahn!” the employee tells me

This is a flat lie

Deutsche Bahn provides this data still. The fault is with SNCF’s IT. And employees here are blaming Deutsche Bahn

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@jon
So DB changed nothing in their API? But SNCF IT changed their systems and woopsie?

If I did that at work many people would be very upset.

The Neo-Greek style Belhaven-Westbourne Church in the Hyndland area of Glasgow. Designed by John Honeyman, it was built in 1881.

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@thisismyglasgow Neo-greek?
Up here in Sweden there was a national romance period in almost that time frame, style mimicking what they thought the viking age & medieval Swedish high-status buildings were like (decorations-wise). Any such local style in Scotland?

Don't wash the Cybertruck in direct sunlight.

So essentially:
• Keep away from bright lights
• Keep away from water

I'm just waiting on the rule that you can't feed the Cybertruck after midnight.

RT @cmjuliewon Grateful to NYC Parks for working closely with residents and my office to install stone blocks at the entrance of the Queensbridge Baby Park Greenway. This is just the first step to fully addressing illegal driving and parking on this pedestrian and cyclist space.

After meeting with the Queens Parks team, they engaged residents and worked with
Con Edison to ensure that debris were removed from the actual entrance to the nearby NYCHA parking lot. … Stay tuned.

At the western end of the Queensbridge Greenway, four large concrete blocks leave about 7 feet of space for bikes to enter and exit.

Melbournes trains have been a revelation. We have to get urban railway infrastructure into public ownership in . The status quo is unacceptable when you realize how much it constrains our options to REALLY expensive alternatives.

@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

Was listening to an Alan Fisher music mix at work (as one does), and got to thinking about the Acela.
Looked it up on wiki.
Not only are the new trains going to be 10m longer (9 passenger short cars vs 6 long cars), there's also going to be 40% more trains.
So the total capacity of the fleet is going up from 6080 to 10808. A 77% capacity increase.
When they get the new trains into service we might see a real bump in passenger numbers simply from having more seats.
Nice.

50 million people rode intercity buses in 2023. That’s almost double Amtrak ridership. Time to give the Dog some respect! https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/intercity-bus-outlook-amtrak-flixbus-greyhound/706571/

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@Nondriver
Just like with transit in a city, intercity transit has a big niche for buses. BIG.

If the private sector can't provide... Ambus. A sister to Amtrak, but with intercity buses.

Might be a good idea.

The Bergenline Subway, because an area as dense and walkable as Brooklyn needs a train.

RT @jeremy_nothere money is no object, politics are no problem: what is one transit project you'd have built in your metro area? and why?

YimbyEarth, (edited )
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit @jeremy_nothere

My own (much better & much longer) routing for the proposed Yellow subway line, of course.

Bright yellow ones. Official, then mine. Official one is like a DLR-style train. Mine would be a full size subway like the other lines in Stockholm.
I'll include the new branches for lines I'm taking bits from to create the new line, obviously. No budget limits, after all.

Green, Red & blue are the existing 3 subway lines. orange etc are LRT mostly.

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@Alon @capntransit
In my version?
The idea is to avoid going to the current transfer stations while still providing direct transfers to all the other lines inside the inner city. Slightly long for walking to those places from my Yellow line, yes, but the new direct links under the waters would make brand new travel patterns possible and thus create new nodes that would be interesting for companies to locate at.

Sanity check request: five-line metro (four radial, one circle along the obvious alignment), 159 km total length - is that a good fit for Amman metro crayon, or is it too little for how big the city is, which is 4 million plus 1 million in the suburbs?

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@Alon
I'm no actual expert, but it sounds reasonable?
All four radial lines have direct interchanges with eachother and the circle line goes outside those interchanges, each radial line thus having 5 interchange stations in the core?
And pencilled in placements for at least 2-3 more lines?

Nice that transit and livable streets advocates are taking notice of the dire financial condition of privately owned buses.

Where were they when the government was shoveling millions at the airlines and the auto industry? Demanding additional funding for publicly owned transit systems and ignoring private buses.

Has the time come for AmBus?

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit
Honestly, intercity bus lines might be the part of US transit i know the least about.
I kind of know Greyhound used to be a really big thing. And newer operators exist.
But that's about it.
Here in Sweden that market got deregulated many years ago, seems to work fine. Which I assume is from plenty of factors being different here, just like for trains and local transit.

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit as for the buses not getting bailed out like car makers and airlines?
I'm not in the least surprised. Same pattern as has been ongoing for a long time.

I guess you could have a system wherein the bus operators get a set subsidy if they run certain routes at a set max price (for most seats?) and sell via a given website/hotline/... etc.
Might work better for buses than trains?

We all know and love Alon's map of best US HSR lines to build first.

But what lines would you add in Europe @Alon ?

YimbyEarth,
@YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

@fluffykittycat @Alon
Hard take:
No. Not with HSR.
Reliable passenger rail going 160-200 km/h day and/or night: Yes.
But building dedicated 300 km/h lines all the way across just isn't going to be worth it in any foreseeable future iirc.
Taking a big chunk of the market shares on the lines in the map would be a huuuge cultural & pollution shift even without touching shares on like LA-NYC.

I'm not against building more! But focus on these first.

    This is such a good plan by @eta_ny .
    An RER is clearly needed, and would create better transit per operating cost.
    And to start with the already existing tracks? Just plain smart.

    YimbyEarth, to random
    @YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

    from @wikipedia "Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830 was the world's first inter-city railway, and the first railway to rely exclusively on locomotives driven by steam power, with no horse-drawn traffic permitted at any time; the first to be entirely double track throughout its length; the first to have a signalling system; the first to be fully timetabled; and the first to carry mail."

    And I've yet to go on it myself. Maybe combine it with a trip on Eurostar and the West Coast Mainline?

    YimbyEarth,
    @YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

    @DiegoBeghin
    Side note:
    I'm always amazed Liverpool & Manchester are about the size of Gothenburg & Stockholm - but our Swedish cities are over 7 times as far apart!

    YimbyEarth,
    @YimbyEarth@urbanists.social avatar

    @Alon @DiegoBeghin i remember being disappointed we didn't get real HSR in the 90s. But yeah, modernising, consistently double tracking, and fewer level crossings, etc, did what was needed then to be honest. Nowadays many regional services are 200 km/h capable too.
    2020s is when things are ripe for real hsr as a capacity fix, as cities keep growing.
