How do people afford food when they don’t live in a place that can grow it? How do we ensure we can continue to grow food when we are so dependent on chemicals to do so? How does a developing country support agriculture without the huge subsidies currently required in developed nations? How do you educate 8 billion people on how to properly get the nutrients they need from new sources of food? How do convince society that GMOs aren’t bad?

Almost all of those are just straight up the same problems that already exist in the current system though?

They are realities that need to be dealt with if we made the ethical decision to not consume animal products anymore.

Ftfy

It’s kind of just whataboutism. I don’t really have a horse in this race, but I find it somewhat unlikely that most reasonable people are suggesting every human immediately stop eating animal products forever. A transition to a world where people eat less of them doesn’t need us to figure out how to feed the people of Longyearbyen right now.

I feel it’s worth noting that everyone calling you he/him or “little brother” or “man” doesn’t make you not a girl. She’s referred to in game as オトコノコ (otokonoko), which is written ambiguously like that so it can either be 男の子 meaning boy or 男の娘 literally meaning “male daughter”. When she’s referred to as ‘man’, she feels insulted, and she uses feminine first-person pronouns and calls herself one of “three sisters.”

Saying she’s “just a crossdresser” is a possible interpretation, but not one that is clear and unassailable. In translation, she’s either just a girl, explicitly trans, or somewhat ambiguous more like the original Japanese, so the people publishing the game don’t seem to think of her as just a crossdresser.

All that to say, she’s been trans for a while, even explicitly, it’s just happening in the English version of the game now.

when the narration and descriptions use those as well, it gives it more importance than just having other characters misgender them in conversation.

Maybe, but it could also just be the nature of the culture at the time to talk about trans people that way. “A boy who thinks he’s a girl” is just, by our current understanding, a transphobic description of a trans girl.

the game came out in 2004 when that term was essentially only used for" crossdressers" in Japan - what I guess we’d these days call femboys - and basically never for trans people.

I’m not close enough to say with any authority that it was or wasn’t, but the use of that word, even in third person narrative descriptions of her, doesn’t really sound like “they’re definitely just a crossdresser” so much as someone euphemistically describing a trans girl. Especially when the character herself references herself as a girl. That right there is really the most important part.

By all means don’t just trust the word of a random girl on the Internet, but there ya go

Watts is what sets fires, though. It’s literally the “amount of energy delivered to the surrounding area per second”

1-2 kW is pretty typical for a single cooktop/hot plate or small space heater, so at least that same amount of energy put out by of those is going to be coming from that light. Some of that energy is in the form of the light, but at least a fair amount of it is heat, and “several thousand” could be a lot more than 1-2.

Silentiea,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Iirc max efficiency of any light is around 600 lumens per watt, so a theoretically perfect light source that’s 7000 watts would hit 4 or 5 million lumens. Probably more like 3 million for real, physical lights that are only 80% or so efficient.

That seems like a lot more than you need unless you’re simulating the sun or something for a shot. So probably not an LED

The compensatory damages are to compensate for lost revenue and such that the defamation may have caused, while punitive damages are additionally to punish for the willful wrongdoing.

Yeah, “impossible” is almost certainly an overstatement. Just harder.

Now that DuckDuckGo is out. Give me your search prompts and I'll answer them as best I can. That includes images (based on what I have saved on my PC). So what is it you wish to know or see?

Edit: Due to popular demand FatTony Search servers are down for the time being. but has gone open source just in time (Yes that’s how it works 😡) . You may now get responses from other users. Servers will be back up some time later.

Silentiea,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It depends. The light is definitely moving at c, no matter who checks and from everyone’s perspective, but as a consequence of that the answers to those other questions change depending on how you measure. The coordinate system (technically the “reference frame”) you choose changes the answer. Even more, time isn’t the same for each frame, so you even have to specify for whom it has been 1 hour.

Capital gains taxes are only levied against the profit earned from investment, not the gross value returned to the stakeholder.

If someone buys a stock for $100, then later sells it for $150, only $50 is taxed. So the money that was “already taxed” by income taxes isn’t being double taxed at all, regardless of the rate of the capital gains tax.

Unless, of course, you count the fact that it was taxed as income by the person who gave it to you, in which case all money has been taxed numerous times before and the argument is that taxes in general are bad.

Silentiea,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yup.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be glad for more money in my take-home, but in general I’m in favor of the things taxes pay for. I’d prefer to just be paid better.

In their house, my sister is already using the threat of Christmas big brother against any minor hijinks that their kid gets up to.

Oof, that seems a bit much to me. Does she tell stories about the bogeymen or Baba Yaga, too? I’d rather my child be concerned with the actual consequences for their actions rather than the imagined ones

Silentiea,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah, it’s not the very idea of Santa I’m railing against here, it’s using him as a bogeyman to control behaviour.
