Me every time I change my tires: okay next time I’m definitely just paying someone to do that

Next winter: … but I could save $50

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@christianselig When I was young did many things on my cars & lawn that I eventually stopped as I grew older. Was particularly affected by living in Switzerland 5 years where everyone worked hard at their jobs & hired others who worked hard at their jobs to get things done. Realized doing that was much more rewarding than being proud of fixing a car 🙂

The secret of the Bushmiller Society is out.

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@glennf Love Nancy, have been reading it since Father brought Miami newspapers home every day when I was growing up in Florida. Also enjoy the early Fritzi Ritz cartoons on Mastodon when Nancy was her little-seen niece, the early romantic situations she gets into are very charming. Bushmiller clearly enjoyed drawing beautiful young women & Fritzi & her friends were perfect examples 🙂

@glennf Love it, very impressive. Wife LOL’ed at the Nancy suit 🙂

In the entire history of computing, there has never been a more important time to teach people about #Linux than right now.

(And never a worse time for me not to be doing @Linux4Everyone -- so I hope my fellow YouTube and content creators will double down and show people the light!)

absolutely epic

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@tvaziri Saw “Beverly Hills Cop” when lived in Switzerland, luckily in English with German subtitles. All our Swiss friends wanted to know if US police actually hid on highways to catch speeders. We said yes they do 🙂

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@glennf @tvaziri Ha, they did carefully line up a kilometer before a merge so they could merge politely. I’m afraid we drove up the closed lane (perfectly legal) until we reached the merge. Speeding was another thing entirely, we tried not to speed because we didn’t want any tickets on our foreigner’s record, but of course everyone passed us. At least in Europe the right lane is exclusively for slower drivers, stay out of the left lane & you’re ok.

Saw a clip of the Agatha series actors bragging that the show has very little CG. The magic was all…practical. Who cares? What is this obsession? CG is only an issue for the director and creative people on the movie and accountants, and if it distracts by looking unreal while watching a TV show or movie. An unhealthy focus that feels anti-VFX worker, when there’s so much VFX in media that nobody realizes. This series captures the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ttG90raCNo&t=937s

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@glennf The miracle of CG that gave us accurate recreations of real history like Pearl Harbor & the Doolittle Raid & of fake history like LOTR is astonishing to old people like me who had to pretend along with the filmmakers that what we were seeing before CG was real. While it can be overused like the Star Wars Episide 4 additions, it is in general a great improvement to movie watching 🙂

The Osborne 1 was my first "portable" computer. If I'd tried swinging it like this, my arm would have come off in five minutes. It weighed almost 25 pounds.

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@sjvn I took an IBM Portable PC with me when I moved to Switzerland. Think it weighed 35 pounds even with just 2 5-1/4” floppy drives. Luckily we were young so could easily lift it into the overhead bin & carry it carefully to our rented house when we arrived. Sold it for 1/2 price when we returned to US 5 years later, this time with a real portable Toshiba with plasma screen & 40MB hard drive 🙂

I think I’ve figured out the Budget tolling options for renting. For $26/day (not sure if every day of rental or not still!) plus tax you get 100% of tolls covered. For $6/day only on days used with the tolling systems that use license plates, you can pay the actual no-transponder fee. I guess if you’re going the corporate route the all-in, paid-in-advance option is best? I will have to pay a cash toll on the NJ Turnpike.

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@glennf Which luckily still takes cash, but probably not for long. Congestion pricing coming to NYC by license plate, how will rental companies deal with that? Daughter & husband rent cars often in NYC, will cost money to drive it off the lot 🙁

@glennf Programmed in COBOL in 1960’s, good attempt at making a readable programming language in contrast to FORTRAN’s unreadable formulas. Hope it works, there’s a lot of COBOL programs that need to be read and rewritten 🙁

BSD and the internet were state sponsored software.

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@vwbusguy @sjvn Indeed, worked for both organizations that sponsored them. Was software engineer for DoD in 1970’s using ARPANET to communicate with colleges in CA, then did software engineering with Bell Labs in 1980’s working with Unix & C. In both cases we could have never imagined the future of any of these technologies.
