Ring reverberates -- via Planet Nude

"Whether he knew it or not, Fred Ring wasn't just fighting for his freedom; he was challenging deep stigmas society held about nudity, staking the claim that nudism is not inherently obscene. Despite considerable public opposition, his case spotlighted his argument, and raised the question: Is nudity a crime, or a civil right?"

Naked Wanderings is Seven Years Old

"Naked Wanderings has grown to be much more than we could ever dream of. On one hand, we feel like we have a responsibility now to just keep going. But on the other hand, we are living the life we’ve always dreamt of. And we have no plans to stop doing this any time soon."

The cornball country humor TV series "Hee Haw" (basically, a "countryfied" version of "Laugh In") astoundingly ran from 1969 to 1992, and then two more years from 1996 to 1997.

I just stumbled across this bit from the show:

Rural country schoolhouse

Teacher to girl student: What book did you read for your homework?

Girl: Moby Richard, teacher.

Teacher: Moby Richard? You mean Moby Dick don't you?

Girl: Well, I didn't study it well enough to get THAT familiar with it!

Jeez.

NaN,

@lauren I wonder if the shortness of Laugh-In's run vs. Hee Haw was because the former's humor was too cerebral, or because it was just too left-leaning? I don't recall much anti-war humor in Hee Haw. But then, Hee Haw never got Tricky Dick to say "Sock it to me," either.

How to Find a Great Naturist Hotel -- via Naked Wanderings

"If you’re staying in a hotel, to what extent can you still connect to your surroundings?... [A]s long as we’re talking about places that promote nudity in a non-sexual way and that create spaces where respect for others is important, we believe that we can talk about naturist hotels."

Watching a really excellent, proper aspect ratio print of "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970). Can't get enough of that "AI takes over the world" goodness!

NaN,

Of all the various manufactured robotic voices in filmdom, Colossus' voice is still the most haunting and frightening to me. Whatever the sound engineers did to process Paul Frees voice, they created a great voice for the character.

(Again, for the lurkers.)

The situation of being in debt while working in a company town was the subject of a song written by Merle Travis and made popular by Tennessee Ernie Ford: "Sixteen Tons."

"You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store."

Are there any good "feminist" out there? It doesn't necessarily have to have overt philosophically themes (but it def can), just anime that have well-written, well-rounded leading women characters.

A lot of the anime I consume has mostly hypersexualized women characters (I don't go out of my way for that, it seems like it's just kind of a staple of the medium). For instance, I really like shonens, but they can be super fan-servicey. I'd like to shake that up.

I know there are some great Miyazaki characters, but other than that, I'm not aware of many others. are very welcome.

EDIT: I wasn't expecting so many replies! 0.o Looks like there are some awesome recommendations here, thank you all so much! ❤️

Might I suggest Psycho-Pass, if you enjoy police dramas in a high-tech future? The first season storyline follows newly-minted Inspector Akane Tsunemori who, over the course of the plot, grows to eventually replace her boss. In the beginning she is somewhat timid because she is new, but grows in courage and capacity to make difficult decisions.

I know many of you reading this will not know the reference, but the WordPress "100 years service for $38,000" offer reminds me of something that Mr. Haney from "Green Acres" would offer.

Perhaps a demonstration for those who are unfamiliar with the good Mr. Haney.

My favorite part of the GOP debate was when a mouse ran on stage and all the candidates started hissing at each other (I assume to call dibs on who gets to eat the mouse) but no one attempted to catch the mouse (I assume due to a lack of stamina).

I would have thought DeSantis would jump at the chance to get the mouse. He chased a mouse in Florida, why not Wisconsin?

Hurricane Hilary is likely to bring an extreme rain and potential flooding event to interior southern California and Nevada. As a blog based in Houston, we know a few things about floods and want folks in those areas to take this seriously.

https://theeyewall.com/hurricane-hilary-poised-to-bring-potentially-extreme-rainfall-to-the-southwest-u-s/

NaN,

@ai6yr

I know this is pushing the bounds of forecasting, but the Windy app is showing a potential for as much as 6 inches of total rainfall in the Indio area (ECMWF and GFS models; ICON calls for half of that). I'm wondering how all this rain will affect the Salton Sea and whether it will become a Southern California version of Tulare Lake?
