It's been about 7 weeks since the launch of "Stirring the Hornet's Nest at Het Thamsya"!

I am incredibly grateful and thankful for all the feedback and reviews (will compile them in my Instagram highlights in the coming week).

There is one review I want to share:
@lincodega of Rascal News took a deep dive into the history, culture, Buddhism underlying the adventure. Along with many nice words about the game design!❤️

I almost teared up reading it (or maybe I did).

https://www.rascal.news/munkao-hornet-filled-temple-run-demands-cleverness-to-crawl-through-het-thamsya-game/

With straightforward maps and a temple-maze that protects Satur, Munkao’s work is both relatable to a wide audience of roleplayers and deeply entrenched in Southeast Asian cultures. The goal isn’t quite as straightforward as the text says, but on every page there are hints at ways to undermine the assignment, to come at the adventure laterally. The slanting bits of information give way to a creative puzzle-solving style of roleplay, allowing both players and game masters to find novel ways to “solve” the problems of a very large hornet’s nest attached to the back of a meditative temple. One of the things I admire about concise, system-agnostic adventures like this is that all the details add up to a much larger world that is greater than the sum of its parts. Seeing the world be built up as you dive deeper into the text, a hornet’s nest of delicate paper layers that create a massive container, is richly satisfying, and Munkao delivers a meal fit for a (Hornet) Queen. It’s much harder to do than one would think, and by carefully leaving clues within the text and adding contradictions and frustrations within the opposing ideologies of the characters, Het Thamsya presents a wonderfully built world that feels like a segment of woven rattan that has been taken out of a much larger basket of stories.
Guardian Automata have been a part of Indian and Southeast Asian legends for millenia, with some records of legendary robots dating back to 400 B.C., assumed to be a cultural artifact diffused from Greek mythos during times of cultural interactions. Integrating these legendary pathways through a Buddhist map, while also using computer programming to interpret ancient understandings, Munkao has developed a fascinating setting that elegantly blends oppositional themes. Making too much noise, or even encountering a creature that would destroy the peace of the temple, wakes the meditative Satur, and creates a situation that results in some failure… but not total failure. While the adventurers are only warned of waking Satur, there are other, more lasting threats that come from cascading failures. By asking players to be quiet and clever as they slide in and out of the Het Thamsya temple, Munkao has created a game that demands roleplay, even as combative encounters are presented. The goal is to sneak, disable, and destroy, using the mantras against the automata and, by extension, their maker.

@afif I think Lim chung wei is equally if not more gross.
But I wonder if, if at their "level". It's also a compromise that they are unable to refuse in order to do acting/sports/whatever.
(like many actors during Najib's 2nd administration)

Starting a thread on the different types of tofu and how to cook them. (Some of these are vegan, some are not. In Chinese cooking, tofu is not a vegan protein):

  1. Egg tofu

This is one of my fave tofus. It isn't vegan. It's made with soy beans AND eggs. It has a eggy taste that egg lovers will love; but that goes way entirely when it's panfried lightly.

And this is the egg tofu dish I always order at restaurants (and now make at home) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uthY_SuR_7w&pp=ygUec3BpY2VzIG4gcGFucyBzaXpsaW5nIGVnZyB0b2Z1

Munkao,
@Munkao@dice.camp avatar

@skinnylatte Aw man. Different types of tofu is what im obsessed with, so this is awesome. But i also think a complete taxonomy is such a lost cause.
Sometimes the difference is just down to the maker/seller, both are blocky soft tofu but has such a huge difference in taste. The creaminess, chewiness (in Teochew tofu) and savour-iness all differs so much, it might as well be another type of tofu.

And how fresh the tofu matters so much as well!

Munkao,
@Munkao@dice.camp avatar

@skinnylatte The difference types of dried tofu sticks is also insane right? The taste and texture. aw man, it's just such a huge spectrum.
And then how you treat the tofu also matters so much.

We also once had a soft tofu in Japan that tasted like ricotta, that was wild.

ah. I just have so much excitment and thoughts that I'm just vomitting it all out. More tofu please.

What I think whenever I see people defending killing stray dogs by saying “my cat was killed by some stray dog”….

Stray dogs can’t get to your cat unless your cat has been wandering outside and pooping everywhere.

Munkao,
@Munkao@dice.camp avatar

@rakyat This was one of my neighbours at my old place. His house had over 20 cats, some really sickly. He got angry when we fed and neutered some of them. And when one of the stray dogs we neutered killed the cat, he was furious and called DBKL to catch the dogs.
"Kind-hearted" people are the worst when doing animal neutering or rescue.
(Him, the boss up the street breeding dogs to jaga his kilang, and feeders that don't neuter)

So, recently a popular Malaysian restaurant in Taiwan caused a series of food poisoning & deaths and unfortunately it triggered the xenophobic tendencies in some Taiwanese ppl who are now boycotting all Malaysian restaurants. Sigh.

Anyone missing some Leslie Cheung? A Chinese Ghost Story is one of my favourite movies in the world, and so is this beautiful song he say.
PS: The movie is based on one of the Tales from "Tales from a Chinese Studio", an ancient compendium of ghost/supernatural stories from the 16th century.

For example, the village of Atar in Sumatra, Indonesia has many migrants who move to Jakarta and other big cities to own or work in photocopy shops. As a result, there is a giant statue of a photocopy machine in the village

“If AI does replace your job, rest assured the billionaires will find a new way to force you into wage slavery for 10-to-15 hours hours a day, so you won't have time to think about restructuring society into a more equitable model for everyone. The job might change a little, but you will be working to keep someone else in power. That ain't ever going to change.”

@rakyat I remember someone told me that the same applies to Thai food? That their royal kitchen pretty much serves the same type of food as commoners but just maybe better presentation. (can't remember where I heard it from + could be story spun to sell Thai food given their soft power marketing)

I'm not that close to my family, but the times I catch uncle/aunties (ok, b4 pandemic)
speaking teochew at coffeeshop. It's the most familial feel I have(more than CNY reunions or gatherings)

My family's spoken teochew is incredibly corrupted by Malaysian dialects, failed miserably when I once tried to communicate in Teochew in Bangkok.

Omg I am still hungover and sad after finishing . I need a bromantic to fill the void.

One thing the show made me realise was how much I missed classic dramas. So many CDramas revolve around romance - I miss heroic, adventuring around the jiang hu stories. There are precious few of them these days. So if you know of any do recommend me some!

Some shows that come to mind:
Ever Night
Joy of Life
Sword Snow Stride
Ancient Detective

Munkao,

@liztai Where do you watch this?
Also, does it have a lot of pretty boys and girls, the beautifulness of Cdrama has made it very boring for me. :D
Ok, the only cdrama i watched is longest night in Chang An :P

@skinnylatte I do wonder why a decade or two ago, there was this recurring meme about cats not loving you back.
Almost every single cat(except for a few real assholes) we've adopted, fostered or even just neutered, has always shown lots of affection back.
