what a surprise, the vile Boris breached the ministerial code in accepting new job at the Daily Hate https://theguardian.com/politics/live/2023/jun/16/boris-johnson-partygate-report-rishi-sunak-damian-green-vote-conservatives-uk-politics-live

Meant to clear new jobs with committee to avoid former ministers cashing in on their previous govt job, Boris only told them 30 mins beforehand... Total disdain for rules and expected behaviour by an entitled bilgebag.

As part of today's event in the bookshop, I got to hold a 75 million year old dinosaur fossilised bone! 🦖🦕

We had Steve and Anne Brusatte for an all-ages event on dinosaurs and mammals, with books for adults and children. Huge fun

What did you do at work today? Made kids interested in reading, got to handle dino fossils... I do love my work

Delighted to hear from fine @orbitbooks crew that long-gestating project to bring The Culture drawings of the late, & still much-missed Iain M Banks to print, now has a November 2023 release.

"Faithfully reproduced from sketchbooks kept in the 1970s & 80s, these annotated original illustrations depict the ships, habitats, geography, weapons and language of Banks' Culture series of novels in incredible detail."

Interior pages from the forthcoming The Culture - The Drawings, collecting sketches and art and notes about his bestselling Culture series of novels by the late Iain M Banks

Interesting piece on the Romans in #Scotland https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65388673

I've always been aware of this history, as the town I grew up, on the edge of Glasgow, was a major fort on the Antonine Wall. Got young me interested in history, learning that it didn't all happen "far away", but also on my doorstep.

It's 7:30 am, May 11. The railing is parallel to the street which runs north-south, so I'm facing due east. The shadows now have a distinct tilt to the south which means the sun is rising from the northeast. Northeast! I'm probably the only person in Seattle who has noticed or cares.

@dpscifi Living in Scotland, the shift of light is incredibly noticeable through seasons. I delight in watching it, and photographing it. It's not just angle, the quality of the light differs depending on season and sun's orientation. Light quality here in spring and autumn is just remarkable.

Well, when not raining anyway! As a Seattle person I'm sure you can empathise with that!

This just went straight into my top ten favourite boat names.

I’m in Guernsey (for the first time) to speak at their literary festival tomorrow on Blue Machine, so if you know anyone on the island, do encourage them to come along.

Met "expresses regret" for acting like the bully boot boys of a fascist regime rather than police officers in a democratic nation https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65527007

They wilfully deprived citizens of their rights. To hell with the Met and it's pretend regret . And to hell with this Tory government that rushed through a law that enables police to act in this way. On a democracy policing is by consent, they're meant to serve the people. They do not

Met Police at one point tweeted that they has "intelligence" that some they pre-emptively arrested had rape alarms that they could have thrown to scare horses in coronation parade.

This remind me of Blair's "intelligence" that "proved" WMDs in Iraq, ie both total nonsense to justify heavy handed policy.

And given Met's terrible record of sexually abusive officers, any rape alarm would likely be to protect against assault by an officer.

For those nauseated by this cringeworthy "please swear allegiance" feudal nonsense https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

Some kings I would much rather give allegiance to:

Arthur, the Once & Future King

Martin Luther King

Jason King

Elvis.

Reading some lovely Flying Eye books for kids that are coming out next month, for Bookseller's Circle (kind of a recommends for Booksellers, by other Booksellers).

Laura Suarez's graphic novel Monster Support Group (nice Addams Family vibe to take of growing up & changing), & Adriena Fong's picture book Ning & the Night Spirits, which is channelling some seriously lovely Ghibli vibes.
