AI (or machine learning etc) can be useful for certain tasks. But it's time we started asking ourselves a simple question when it comes to AI:

At what cost?

Is 80 years really long enough for Europeans to forget how voting for nazis ends? The current political situation is a demonstration of a profound failure of education over decades.

What's the cheapest way to ship a laptop from the USA to the UK? My friend in California has a T470s (ThinkPad) that he's willing to give me but from what I've been able to find online, it will end up costing more than the laptop is worth to send it over here. Especially as and when customs charge me an arm and a leg to import it.

For reference they are around £80/$100 on ebay in the UK.

I am currently in the completely normal and not at all ridiculous situation of using an old ThinkPad as a WiFi dongle for my desktop machine.

trivorak, to random

With as much as I list to @JoeRess you would think my cheap ass would throw you a $10r

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@trivorak I will keep everything I make free as in beer to everyone for as long as I possibly can. It might mean waiting a few weeks or listening to adverts, but I will fight as hard as I can to make it so that $10 is always optional.

If you aren't in a position to spend $10 a month right now then no worries at all. Just listening is supporting me and the whole LNL family. Maybe spread the word instead. Every little helps.

A brief news segment with mostly good stuff from Mozilla and KDE. Plus some great discoveries including downloading YouTube and other videos, processing data and CSV files on the command line, controlling cycling workout gear and graphing your progress, and a top tip for following Mastodon accounts in a normal RSS feed reader.

Android is like that one friend who you know is just useless and pisses you off more often than you should put up with, but ultimately answers the phone when your toilet is leaking uncontrollably and talks you through the worst possible dirty hack of a solution that will do for tonight and stop everyone shouting at you long enough to get a few hours of sleep.

iOS is that friend who hooks you up with a "sweet job" working for a tyrant that pays incredibly, but will drive you into an early grave.

Big appreciation to all of you who follow and who like, share, and reply (even if it's to point out a typo) ✌️.

Amidst the shifting sands of AI slop, curated algorithms favouring specific types of content, and a broader shift to YouTube and Reddit for news, it often feels like blogs like mine are going the way of the elves in Lord of the Rings 🧝🏻‍♂️.

Your support, especially on a platform like this one, means a lot, so thank you!

Often late at night I'll send myself notes to remind future me of ideas for episodes and topics etc. I've just sent myself this and it's going to take some time to process it. Can I really bring myself to do something so monstrous? Tune in soon to find out!

I now find myself in agreement with @felimwhiteley. We are going to look back on this period in a few years and generative AI will be considered in the same light as blockchain and crypto are now.

There are both pros and cons to Mastodon, when comparing/contrasting with Twitter.

Here's one MASSIVE con on Twitter's side of the balance sheet:

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@jimsalter it makes you wonder what else you can buy. 😬

UK people:

Yes, this is an exciting chance to get rid of the tories. Let's not get complacent, though. It's not enough to just vote tactically. We need to talk to our friends and family members and anyone who will listen about how important it is to make Starmer the Prime Minister.

He might not be your first choice for the job, but it's who we have. The alternative is too horrendous to imagine.

So let's do this. Let's make sure we get this job done.

Idea for a sport:

Instead of moving really quickly, kicking or hitting or throwing a ball or something really accurately, or outwitting people, how about this?

You have to inflict enough brain trauma on your opponent to render them unable to stay on their feet.

"Our plan is to grow the Ubuntu Desktop team by at least another 50% over the next year and we are opening a range of positions across all levels of seniority in the coming weeks. At Canonical we think the future is bright for the Linux desktop and if you have the passion and skills to be at the cutting edge of performance, security, immutability and accessibility then we want to hear from you."

2.5 Admins 194: Thundering Mastodon

Mastodon’s link previews are causing downtime for web servers without properly configured caching, locking down DNS inside Windows networks, why using write-once backup media is a bad idea, and increasing the performance of a Microsoft SQL Server with SSDs and ZFS.
