I'm up to 2016 in my Google photo backup/deletion project. 🤪 Just found photos from that year's DragonCon and I'd forgotten about this cosplay. It was an election year and I thought this would be funny (this was when I thought Hillary would win). I'm seriously tempted to make this sign for 2024 and put it in the yard. #StarTrek #Election2024 #Cosplay #DragonCon

Would you rather be alone in a Space Ship with Darth Vader or the Queen Alien from Alien?

Please support the your answer if you feel like it.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@RickiTarr Darth Vader. If you can just stand there and not do anything to offend him you might be ok. Plus dying from the invisible choke hold would be less terrifying than the alien queen biting you with that acid mouth.

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@RickiTarr the Princess Bride, and its pandemic version.

Over 400 pictures were combined to make this star trail montage taken today between 01:52 and 05:05am. That is how dull I am. I like to watch the Earth rotate. Also am I the only person annoyed that the path is not aligned due South?

@iangriffin that's amazing!!! What a great image.

Since we are coming up on June, it seems like a good time to check in with everyone here on @bookstodon regarding favorite reads of 2024 so far. Whatcha got?

My top five reads of 2024 so far:

The Criminal series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker (ten primary works)

James, Percival Everett

The Book of Love, Kelly Link

Poor Deer, Claire Oshetsky

Prequel, Rachel Maddow

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@jda @kimlockhartga @bookstodon ooh that's on my list, good to know! I loved American Fiction!

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I feel like I've read a lot of fluff so far this year. Not many I just really loved. One series someone here told me about that I did really enjoy is Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies and Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands. Really creative and fun fantasy. I also finally finished Dune 30+ years after first picking it up, and I liked it!

@czarbucks @firefly @AE4WX @amyedge @ai6yr @Jennifer Good morning from the Glen! Doors and windows open, Fat Squirrel No 1 on the rail with tiny finches and flity titmice taking advantage of open rail space. Laundry was finally completed yesterday and I can still walk this morning - wohoo! Today some more Family pics go up on the wall, and major sweeping/dusting event will commence. If I trust the hip enough, I’ll start in on the pile of cardboard boxes to cut up and go into the recycling. Hope everyone has a GREAT Friday!

@firefly @amyedge @BakerRL75 @czarbucks @AE4WX @ai6yr I think Dory and Watson should team up. I suspect there would be a lot of sniffing things and rolling around and not much running 😂

@firefly @amyedge @BakerRL75 @czarbucks @AE4WX @ai6yr LOL! Fortunately (or unfortunately for matchmaking) Watson doesn't roll around in stinky things 😄

I'm not even upset that my rock theme for the bed was thwarted.
I planned to get Jethro Tull tickseed, Super Star Tickseed, Lil Bang Tickseed, and burning heart false sunflowers but Jethro had STD (all had powder mildew) so I went with a blanket flower.
This is what I was busy buying when my friend texted to give me the fantastic news of the day.
Anyway, this should now backfill all my lost dianthus.

Blanket flower
Heart shaped corner bed with numerous plants.

@msquebanh @Waitnwallflower I have clay soil too. I have given up on butterfly bushes, I've had so many die and I love them 😭 I have a few things that survive extreme heat, drought, and cold and I'm just sticking with them! I have some little yellow coreopsis that come back every year no matter what

The rush to judgment articles and posts I saw yesterday are just aging like warm milk. Preliminary reports are already showing:

  • The IDF targeted two senior Hamas terrorists it had tracked by aerial surveillance to a Hamas compound in Rafah

  • The IDF confirmed no women or children were in the compound before striking

  • The strike took place more than a mile (1.7 km) outside the Al-Mawasi designated humanitarian zone and more than 0.1 miles (180 meters) from the shelters that caught fire

  • The strike was carried out using 17 kg (37 lb) warheads — the smallest munition IDF jets can use; the IDF munitions alone could not have ignited such a large fire

  • The IDF is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, including the possibility that Hamas had stored weapons in the area that the IDF was not aware of and which exploded due to the strike

  • satellite photos there was at least one Hamas rocket launcher near the compound that was bombed, which was outside the designated humanitarian zone.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Bam let's see your sources for this.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Bam well they sure don't seem very interested in not blowing up refugees. They did it again today and killed 37 people in tents.

#Obama should have codified #Roe as promised. #Biden should have codified Roe as promised. Campaigning on the Court is a ploy to GOTV and to raise more campaign cash:

“We really need a book titled ‘Those Who Knew Roe Was Never Enough and the the SC would overturn Roe.’ There are thousands such people.”

https://bsky.app/profile/prisonculture.bsky.social/post/3ktidd632dg27

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@micchiato I'm not a politician and I knew it. I personally think Democrats never tried to pass legislation to protect reproductive rights because its such a great fundraising/campaign issue.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Mary625 @micchiato same. Obama is on video promising the first thing he'd do if elected was protect reproductive rights, then after he won we never heard a peep about it again. I got several fundraising texts the day Roe was overturned and I emailed the people some very rude responses.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Mary625 @zakalwe @micchiato I was so excited about his campaign and volunteered and donated. But in 2018 the high cost of the ACA destroyed my small business. My husband lost his job and our insurance, and the cheapest policy on the ACA was $2600/month with a $14k deductible. I'd been running a freelance book development company and my husband couldn't find a decent job so I had to close and get a job just for affordable health insurance. It took me years to get over the resulting depression.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Mary625 @zakalwe @micchiato I continued to vote for democrats, but this year will probably be different.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@RickiTarr I am a complete introvert and am perfectly happy entertaining myself. I do have a small group of friends i like socializing with, maybe once a week. I'm in touch with those people all the time via texting. I'm good for some kind of club meeting a couple times a month. If I have to people too much I find it exhausting 😂
