Whenever someone in my life asks why I'm still not sharing air indoors, I tell them that one of the first things we knew about covid is that it affected your sense of smell which equals it affecting the brain.

I'm a knowledge worker, my main tool is my brain and there is no way I can lose it.

Now I have another link I can share with people

“AI” is just bitcoin in the sense it burns cycles on computers with little benefit but lots of hype. It also is dumbing down business.

http://sourcinginnovation.com/wordpress/2024/03/01/open-gen-ai-isnt-just-dumbing-your-business-its-killing-the-planet/

Jeff,

@wiredfire all AI today are spicy machine learning.

Using a 100MW solar facility to shoot 50MW lasers into space with the soundtrack of Space Jam to advertise “intelligent life here!” to the universe is a waste of that solar energy, even if it’s 100% “clean”.

It helps energy source doesn’t matter in this discussion, it’s the waste.

A butcoin mining operation in a hydro plant is a waste of energy.

A LLM “AI” using 100% wind is a waste of energy, in almost all cases, except at the edges.

Is there any minecrafters on here? I have a question, why is my village spawning SO many iron golems?

These aren't all of them, just the ones at this part of the village.

Getting back to upgrading my home server, my websites will go down shortly; I'll see if I can minimize this!

Jeff,

@alcinnz I almost sold my last wired keyboard without realizing it was my last. "Luckily" a dev server crashed in the worst way and I had to get into the bios. That 30min search for a wired keyboard only to realize that the one that was sitting by the door to be sold was the last one.

I'm just glad the Marketplace guy didn't show, now its tucked into a safe place with my last RGB connectable monitor.

My first political memory was the election of #BrianMulroney in 1984. I won't claim to have followed #CanPol that closely for the next few years, but I remember in 1988, in elementary school, that we all kept journals of where the leaders were and what they were promising. That was the Free Trade election, and as I recall I decided that free trade would be good for Canada. (No, I didn't really know anything about economics at the time.)

Jeff,

@mpjgregoire I was too young to really know what was going on. I worry that the voters today will see the CPC party as the same PC party of Mulroney. When the PC and "Canadian Alliance" merged, it was a takeover. They lost the progressive and capitalized the Conservative.

The things that Mulroney accomplished while PM still leave a mark on Canada today, the great and the bad.

Jeff,

@mpjgregoire In absolutes sure, but the 90s grits wouldn't have supported weed either. Society evoles, and when I talk about the policy spread its that I think the liberals and cpc today are farther apart policy wise than the tories and grits of the 90s

Something that I wonder about is why CPR isn’t a typical thing to be taught in schools, starting in junior high.

I took my first course when I was in Scouts, but I don’t remember there being much instruction in the classroom.

CPR saves lives and when it’s needed, it’s needed immediately.

With all the damage to the cardiovascular system from COVID-19 this should be a priority.

I couldn’t find a new podcast to listen to, something similar to the Jordan Harbinger Show, that wasn’t more dude bro or bad audio.

So that leads to me listening to my first audiobook, ever.

I’m not sold on it yet, but I will give it another couple chapters, at least.

Hello Jeff,

I note you are a user of both Pelican and the Photos plugin. I'm trying to test the latter. It isn't working.

Did you use some special incantation, not mentioned in the docs, to get it working?

@Jeff

#Pelican

Jeff,

@fitheach I don't have any good news for you. I'm still using version 1.3.0

Something in 1.4 broke my sites, and then when I tried 1.5.0 this week it didn't work, so I just went back to 1.3 and have left it for Future Jeff to figure out at some point.

@justin may be able to help out

The question in my mind is this, can you plagiarize non-copywriteable work? or out-of-copywrite work? If so, then all ChatGPT use is plagiarism, full stop.

Grammarly, I don't have an opinion on, except I don't think it should be used for anyone working with sensitive information.

Jeff,

And LLMs are NOT the calculator of our times.

This is not an argument that you can win. Calculators may have had issues with large decimal and /0 stuff; but they don't hallucinate whole stock trying to give the answer you want vs something that is accurate and true.

I completed a distro hop from plain Debian to LMDE and also a VM with Nextcloud AIO so that I can continue my move to selfhosting for all business operations.

The Nextcloud thing took me a while, but it was mostly trying to get the reverse-proxy and SSL working properly.

Jeff,

@invisiblethreat I 100% agree with you, & there is a very strong likelihood that I will be switching in 6months. There are two reasons I went this way, skill (I don’t have it), and Nextcloud Talk and Office.

I tried the docker route (and compose) and kept running into issues. Then I could get Talk/Office to do anything.

However it doesn’t look like Talk will do that things I want in a “nice” way. I may use the online Office editor, but I haven’t yet.

@steve

Jeff, to random

Does anyone here use the Nextcloud All-in-one docker image? Would you recommend this over a compose setup?

I’m moving my business off Office365 this break and don’t want to do it twice.

@invisiblethreat @Toxic_Flange This annoyed me for a week or so, but I’m back at it with no issues now.

This may be a strange question to most of you, but I figure there are enough academics in my circle of the fediverse to help.

Where may one find a #latex designer?

I tried to modify a class for my use case, but it’s way out of my realm and it’s a skill when learned I will probably never use again.

It may not be a class thing either, maybe a style to modify a class design.

#latexmk #TeXLaTeX

This may be a strange question, but how many services/apps/etc is too many to have on a single home server.

None of these are critical, and I don't use this as my work server (except for a backup point), but I currently have my DNS, SWAG, Plex, Sonarr, a couple minecraft servers, etc.

I'm thinking about adding photoprism, paperless, nextcloud/owncloud and maybe an archivebox instance too.

My opinion on Marine based energy generators is that its a bad idea, at least until we have more advanced non-ferrous materials. The salt water is an extremely hostile environment and we would be better off focusing on offshore wind than tidal or wave.

This guy leads one of the three major political parties in Canada, yet he refuses to retract a statement that was found to be factually wrong, instead he doubles down on lies.

This is the person 1/3 of Canadian voters want to form the next government.

I really hate this BS.

The moment that people stopped having their own blog (especially developers and people who are in adjacent industries) and relying on sites like medium was the start of the end.

Sure, I know how to 'fake' it to make it seem like I'm a googlebot, but I shouldn't have to.

This looked very promising but now I'm off to find another resource to help me do the same thing.

Jeff,

@jmhorner I’ve never come across that site, I will give it a go in the morning

Jeff,

@machias Same here, and the amount of these calls are way higher. Its to the point that if I don't have the number in my contacts I let it go to voicemail, everytime.

Even though it’s a year away; I’m finding myself completely frustrated and tired of our choices for the 2024 election. A lot still can happen before then, but wow, does the future of the government feel bleak to me.

Jeff,

@machias The choices look pretty bleak, but straightforward ( at least at the federal level). Bad or fascist. I know which I would vote for. I don't think there will be any viable "3rd party" options.

Jeff,

@Edent I have ano older version of these that I used to find out the power draw of certain peripherals. If you come across a cheap cable tester that can validate usb-c cables directly let us know. I have a bunch of cables than say they are 10gbps but some devices disagree.
