Starting to see the ai-generated item descriptions on eBay listings and they're weeeeird. They're like these overly wordy crappy little technical manuals 😂

@jake4480 I recently used ChatGPT to write some 2nd hand marketplace listing descriptions. First draft was extremely e-commerce targeted. Told it to dumb it down, make it less commercial and got a nice text :-).

@jake4480 these days I’m really reluctant to buy a physical game for my Xbox Series X. About halfway through the Xbox One lifecycle I think more and more games require a download up till a point that there’s only just a key file on a disc (I think Halo Infinite does this).

With Xbox Microsoft has a track record of keeping support for digital downloads. Even with Xbox 360 Marketplace shutting down you can still download digital games. I do wonder for how long though.

Anyone here have experience updating a Dockerized Perl application? Specifically I am looking for help upgrading the app from 5.26 to 5.30 and how to rectify errors where some libraries (I think?) were built for Perl 5.26 and won't work under 5.30?

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@dave I usually have issues with modules that link to some shared library. Getting to install DBD::mysql for example is always a challenge.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@dave I usually solve that by installing the system package for the troublesome module. If available of course. Otherwise installing the dev libraries can help as well (with apt).

With MySQL I couldn’t install the new v5 version on the latest Perl 5.38 version so stuck with v4. For me that requires changing the version in my cpanfile.

If I’m not mistaken the official Perl Docker images come with most stuff installed.

Something I frequently need in Siren is a flowchart to help explain how different affiliate programs work, so I'm putting together a flowchart block. Making good use of the LeaderLine library and core's group block, as well as an existing card block I already had laying around. Really loving how much less code I'm writing to do simple stuff like flex layouts with full site editing.

@alexstandiford Cool little library. I'm saving that for later :-).

@alexstandiford The API looks really simple and straightforward as well.

Time to kill off one of my oldest subscriptions. Have been using a paid provider for nearly 20 years. About 5-6 years ago I could upgrade to a yearly subscription for a big discount (compared to the prices they would introduce shortly after). But I haven't really used Usenet for anything at all in the last years.

Somehow cancelling the subscription gives me FOMO for some reason. Can never get it back for that price again. But then again, why would I want Usenet access again...

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@amoroso To be totally honest I only used Usenet to download stuff (which I haven't done for years now, mind you :-)). Have never seen it being used as a discussion forum or sharing of info. But looks like Eternal September is a traditional Usenet server in that regard.

Played a lot of Kirby Triple Deluxe. It's a very strong entry with some very varied leveldesign, neat little puzzles and challenging bossfights. Collectibles can be well hidden, so I missed a couple. That makes returning to the game later on more interesting though.

I'm not a completionist by any measure, but giving me a good reason to revisit a stage is always a good thing in my book.

I'll probably finish this one for my 30 days of 3DS challenge!

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@weebdeluxe Triple Deluxe is a great game! I liked Planet Robobot even more. Both are really good.

Both games also have some sort of speedrun mode with Meta Knight and King Dedede.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@jake4480 @weebdeluxe Ha yes I can't remember a Kirby game I didn't like at all. Maybe one of those spin offs like Fighters Deluxe (although that one was still fun). Epic Yarn, though still a good game, was a bit too far off for me for a regular Kirby game. Return to Dreamland on Wii got a bit stale.

Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush on Wii U could be pretty frustrating. Looked great, but the controls could get in the way for me.

If you haven't tried Forgotten World on Switch, get it now! :-)

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@jake4480 @weebdeluxe I never really played the SNES or GBA games. Should at least hook up my SNES mini to play some of those. They still look awesome though.

It's funny how Kirby games are for the most part very easy (a bit too easy at times) but when you reach the final boss or if there's post game content the difficulty spikes!

is such a horrible chat experience. When you’re trying to read back content jumps around whenever a new message is being sent to the channel you’re reading. It also has a lot of bells and whistles that don’t offer anything aside from distractions.

Why can’t we just go back to instead?

Htbaa, to microsoft Dutch
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

I really wished the EU or something would step up against the monopoly #Microsoft has on #email with #Office365 #Microsoft365. MS and #Google as well seem to decide who can deliver mail to their servers and who can’t (spoiler, anyone other than MS or Google).

You can tick off all the boxes (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, no spam reputation) and still they decide whether they want to deliver your mail or not. At the same time they happily spam your mail servers though.

@jake4480 @Htbaa yeah and where the internet (web) was supposed to be a decentralized thing here we are with a couple of really big websites where everything happens. What happened to the small community websites, forums, fan/topic sites etc. The web used to be fun.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@argv_minus_one @Htbaa @jake4480 very true and I realize that I’m on a small(ish?) community website. At the same time it’s still social media which is very different from what we had back in the day. With social media it’s all about what’s happening NOW. Yesterday is long forgotten.

But maybe we’ll be getting Fediverse powered forums or something?

Htbaa, to vim
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

Up until 4 years ago or something #Vim (or #GVim) was my code editor of choice. But when having to work with #PHP #WordPress I preferred #VSCode, which has become my main editor.

With Vim I could never get IntelliSense to work properly so I dropped that.

Currently want to look into working with (Mac)Vim again. But my #vimfiles are sorely outdated (8-12 years or so!). Time for a fresh start. Used to copy plugin's etc. to my vimfiles, but is there a better way these days to also stay up-to-date?

I don't usually touch WordPress, but wife has hit big problem with their new (all-JS) backend, Calypso.

Due to some browser issue some JS chunks not loading, so she gets the White Page of Death of a blank page (slow hand clap for the React developers out there).

Current workaround (she's stuck on Edge/windows for reasons) is make a Private Window which seems to work for now.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@mahryekuh @danjac Open the website with developer tools opened (F11 probably) and look at the console. That usually gives some indication of what's going wrong.

Htbaa, to macos
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

Overall I'm pretty content with #MacOS. Have moved to it from #Windows 2 years ago now. But one thing I really dislike is with every big MacOS update (the yearly releases) is that there's always the possibility that some software stops working and requires an update. With all the Windows 10 updates I've run over the years I don't recall running into this issue.

For example #CaptureOne 22 won't run on #Sonoma and requires me to buy an upgrade. I wonder if #Apple is at fault here or the vendor.

Hmm this #SEGA #Dreamcast #GDEmu is probably a dud. Bought it 1-2 years ago from AliExpress (so I guess it’s a clone?) and it worked fine. Played a couple of times and worked fine. The SD card was brand new as well (not from AliExpress ;-)). Sometime later started having these stuck at loading issues but could get past it. But currently, it’s not getting further anymore. Bah.

@jake4480 By chance I saw there was a new version of the menu manager and wondered if it was available for MacOS, which it was! Deleted the GDMenu image and let it rebuilt. Working instantly. Though I wonder if it’ll keep working :-).

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@jake4480 yeah luckily it is. This tool was written in C# and these days that’s cross platform.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@jake4480 hmm it’s booting alright, but it’s also crashing in the menu. Games aren’t booting yet and if they are they crash back to the dashboard of the Dreamcast. I think I still need to do some work on getting this to work and make usable. Darn.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@jake4480 it took all day to prep the microSD card but it’s running again :-D.

Htbaa,
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

@jake4480 It's broken AGAIN! The GDEmu must be doing some sort of writing to the SD card as a newly prepped SD card makes it work just fine.

At this point I might as well put back in the GD-ROM. Bah :-(.
