@jake4480 Well done! It's pretty crazy, too, that physical games are not as easy to get as they used to be unless you buy them when they first come out. You basically have to go to Game Stop and see if they have a used one...

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo haha thanks - yeah, it's a mess. Ah, GameStop hahaha. Haven't been in one of THOSE in a long time!

@jake4480 Well, I've noticed that MLB The Show is hard to get after the initial release unless you buy it used. Obviously, physical copies are limited release because Sony et al. want you download their games because, as you note in your blog post, the studios and distributers want to have more control over the IP. They'll come a time, as you know, when we'll be renting games instead of buying them outright...

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo ugh. Absolutely this. They'd love it all online, on a server, and then yeah they can shut it down whenever they want, on their whims. I like physical when I can, I even bought physicals of Conan and Diablo IV for the Series X for this very reason. And for Switch we have a bunch of physicals, some really weird ones too. I just counted, we have 15 haha. Not as many as some. But again, I'm semi picky, only keeping the ones we like. I do like having those carts when possible though.

@jake4480 these days I’m really reluctant to buy a physical game for my Xbox Series X. About halfway through the Xbox One lifecycle I think more and more games require a download up till a point that there’s only just a key file on a disc (I think Halo Infinite does this).

With Xbox Microsoft has a track record of keeping support for digital downloads. Even with Xbox 360 Marketplace shutting down you can still download digital games. I do wonder for how long though.

@Htbaa it's all odd, right? Yeah I have exactly 2 games physical for my Series X currently (Conan and Diablo IV haha). The rest, I usually grab on Switch. Some digital though. Their store is ok. But it's a shame it's all going away from physical.

@jake4480 This has been a concern of mine for years. I mean, it's so unreasonable to just kill off a piece of art and then make it so no one else can enjoy it. I hate it. I really do, but unless they can find some sort of profit in it, I think their happy to let it all rot.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@brandonwrites absolutely. It's like they don't care. One of the problems with capitalism. Obsession with profit, turning art to commodity and then not caring about that commodity when it's no longer profitable.

@jake4480 Great post, I 100% endorse your message. Homebrew (and fan reverse-engineering in general) is the way, forever.

People keep rewarding these companies for crummy practices, even those who grumblingly or ironically support companies they know have no respect for them or other customers.

The game industry has a long way to go to earn my respect again, and they by and large have shown no signs of getting back on the right path. We will always have the retro stuff to fall back on

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@rootcompute right? I knew you'd agree. I wanted to talk more about the homebrew stuff but I just wanted to get that post out today- in the future, I'll probably do a post on modding etc, maybe you & a few other folks on here could help me out with it if you feel like it haha. I'll let ya know when the time comes.

@jake4480 Would be happy to share any knowledge and encouragement, I managed to help someone else mod their 3DS recently! I need to mod my xbox360 and PS3 someday soon if I can get motivated.

Some systems are easier than others to get modded, there's a wealth of resources out there for people to take matters into their own hands. Dedicated fans who pioneer these sorts of practices are true heroes to me

@rootcompute awesome. I love the hell out of it. I modded my NES, SNES, and PS1 minis. They were easy. I'm mid swap of a disc drive from one Wii to another 😂

@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 Damn son good luck! Never cracked open a wii before. Hope that goes smoothly

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@rootcompute I hadn't either. I have a kit. Yeah, one casing is great but the drive is dead, and I have a drive in this stupid custom case that is NOT functional but the drive is good. Thanks for the well-wishes, I'm gonna need it 😂
