A drawing made mostly with artist grade crayons by Caran D'Ache, rather than my usual painting supplies.

I'd say that along watercolors, crayons is the most difficult medium to master, because in order to get good coverage and rich, deep colors requires lots of skill. Watercolors are very difficult compared to other, opaque paints because it requires you to think in negative space due to its transparency.

And yet, these are the two art supply mediums we give to kids in pre-school and school. I'd posit that they need to start with colored pencils for drawing, and gouache for painting, not crayons and watercolors.

Two drawings on black paper with (mostly) acrylic markers from a couple of years ago that I haven't posted on the fediverse before.

When I was a 4 years old, I wanted to be like Mr Spock. He was both my first love in life, and my literal idol for many years (and I met Leonard Nimoy years later, in 2005, at Star Trek's 40th anniversary party).

The first Star Trek movie in 1979 was also the first movie I ever saw in a theater, and I still remember Spock in his spacesuit flying towards V'ger. I'll always love my dad for taking me to the theater with him, he wanted me to embrace sci-fi as he had. And that I did!

I eventually followed Spock's footsteps to become a computer programmer, before my health failed me and became housebound, which is when I turned into art.

I had fun painting this one. Christmas is my favorite time of the year, and I love painting such themes. I probably romanticize it in my head a lot due to movies etc, because my Christmases in Greece as a kid were not notable. I had more fun with my husband's family in France. Snow and all. Northern European (I've also lived in UK and Germany in my 20s) and American Christmases felt definitely more Christmas-y to me.

Note: I did two paintings yesterday, one was this one, and the other one was the knight that I posted earlier today. I had to delete the knight one because a cache bug deteriorated the quality of the image after the uploading process. I might post it again in a few months, after I properly scan it, when I have all my gear intact in Greece.

From all the art supplies I kept out of storage boxes, this cheap sketchbook gives me a hard time, as it's losing its "sizing" after a single wash of watercolor (basically, paint spills where you don't actually paint on). This can destroy a painting, and it did this one (the burgundy color on her armor is not what I had in mind, but I had to use it in order to cover the spillage). Oh well. I mostly did this painting to play with light and shininess, and I managed that at the end, so I'm happy.

Doing my best with watercolor, even if I feel more comfortable with gouache. This took me about 3 hours to complete, as I pulled an all nighter after I slept only for a couple of hours tonight. Our impending house move has added lots of anxiety. Painting relaxes me.

Very happy how this gouache painting came out, minus the fact that I had to digitally cover up the witch with that black "cloth" to post it online. In the original painting she's covered only by the vines, but I can't post it here like that. When I was doing collage art 12 years ago artistic nudity was not a problem at all online, but things started changing about 5-6 years ago. As an artist, I have a real beef with censorship, including C-Ws. I rather alter the artwork than hide it altogether behind a gray box.

"The Crafter", with a limited palette Winsor & Newton gouache (B&W, raw umber, red ochre). That's the last illustration I made before my gouache and scanner got all packed up for our move next week. I now have only a few rudimentary art supplies with me (a watercolor palette), and that's gonna stay as such until February. Can't wait to get my art supplies back, I particularly missed oil pastel and bottled inks.

I painted my fantasy of an idyllic growing up version for my brother and I. The reality is that we had a very difficult childhood. I can't wait to be close to my brother soon, as I move back to Greece after 26 years abroad, and never part again.

My younger brother recently bought a motocross motorcycle, something he was looking for for a while now, and I kind of painted his reaction with gouache.

JAWS could be a horror story for mermaids. So stay in your backyard pond for safety! Painted with watercolors.

Tinker & Sheep. This is the very last illustration I painted and then scanned. Now all my hardware is packed away for our move to Europe in just a few days!

I painted this last night with watercolor & ink, until 4 am, and I really like how it came out. The palette is right up my alley. That pumpkin pie too...

In a cabin nestled deep within the woods,
A man in slumber, dreaming as he should,
When in the hush of night, a sound arose,
Three foxes' whispers, in a tale they chose.

Their voices painted stories upon the air,
Of ancient forests and adventures rare,
The man, now stirred from sleep's soft embrace,
Joined the foxes' dance in that quiet place.

Lovingly painted with gouache.

I painted this portrait of an old lady and her dog with handmade watercolors. I love that type of watercolor because it has a very matte, vintage finish compared to commercial watercolors. It's quite difficult to work with it using many layers due to its large particle size (it's ground by hand), but the final feel looks good.

I was a big Greek mythology buff at school. My dad had bought an encyclopedia in the late '70s, and I was learning everything about it via it. Naturally, my favorite character was goddess Athena. All about knowledge & wisdom. The most kind-hearted of the gods too. So I had to paint a portrait in her honor.

When I create narrative illustrations like this one, it's just my inner desire to write & illustrate a children's book. I just wish that AI hadn't destroyed that market segment. Regardless, I might take the plunge and try it...

Back to the cottagecore style, using only 3 colors in the gouache palette (raw umber, burnt sienna, and indigo), plus a bit of yellow colored pencil for the jacket. It's unreal how much more cohesive a piece looks when the palette is so limited. But while this can be a great tool, helping artists to not mess up the colors, it also betrays weakness. Getting very colorful and fully saturated colors to work cohesively in a piece (as seen in some uber-modern pieces), is an art in itself. An art I haven't mastered yet...

I think this is the most complex watercolor I made so far, at least in terms of sketching. I'm happy how it came out for the most part. I wanted to make it a bit funny, given that most families are kinda like that, each person living in their own little world, even when among loved ones.
